The economy continues to dominate the headlines, and it's come out recently that the housing market is now experiencing a 'double-dip' recession. But for our returning veterans, there was never any kind of recovery in the first place. While the national unemployment rate is hovering around 9%, it's 3 percentage points higher for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan (although the overall veteran's percentage is a bit lower than the national average).

May employment numbers from the Labor Department show little improvement in the job market, especially for veterans.

Overall, the report shows the national unemployment rate is 9.1 percent, with little change in the last month because the economy created only 54,000 net jobs in May.

The May report, released on Friday, shows a worsening job market for veterans.

For veterans of all generations, the unemployment rate for May was 8.3 percent. For veterans who left the military after 2001, the Iraq and Afghanistan generation, the May unemployment rate is 12.1 percent. For April, the overall unemployment rate for veterans was 7.7 percent, and the unemployment rate for Iraq- and Afghanistan-era veterans was 11.7 percent.

Marshall Hanson of the Reserve Officers Association said the unemployment picture is even worse for some segments of the veterans’ population. For veterans ages 20 to 24, the unemployment rate has been about 27 percent. For Army National Guard units returning from deployment, unemployment rates are “as high as 45 percent,” Hanson said June 1 in testimony before the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

Tackling unemployment is the top priority for veterans’ service organizations, which met earlier this week with House Republican leaders to press the point. The lawmakers reacted immediately, with Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., announcing he was working on legislation to find jobs for 400,000 veterans over two years or less to drop the overall veterans’ unemployment rate to 4.5 percent.

There also is large and growing bipartisan support for a bill, the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011, that takes a comprehensive approach to changing Labor, Veterans and Defense Department programs aimed at helping veterans find jobs. The chief sponsor of that bill is Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairwoman.

Raine has been taking point on the next topic...which is related to the ongoing abuse of our female soldiers by both their colleagues and private contractors. Two Democratic congressmen have proposed a bill that would give women in uniform the same rights as other federal employees...and would allow military hospitals to perform abortions. You probably just heard a nearby Republican's head explode.

WASHINGTON — Women in the military who are victims of rape or incest could get an abortion at a military hospital under legislation proposed by two New York Democrats.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Louise Slaughter said their bill, reintroduced Monday, would give women in the military the same rights as other federal employees.

The Defense Department reported 3,158 sexual assaults involving military personnel last year, according to the two lawmakers.

Current military policy requires women who want an abortion — regardless of the reason — to seek the procedure at an off-base medical facility at their own expense. Under the legislation, women in the military would still have to pay for the procedure.

In some countries — such as Afghanistan and Iraq — there are no off-base medical facilities and women must pay to travel to another country, according to Bethany Lesser, a spokeswoman for Gillibrand.

The 1976 Hyde Amendment bars the federal government from using taxpayer money to pay for abortions — or allowing abortions to be performed at federal facilities — but exceptions have been made for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.

Those exceptions have not applied to the Defense Department’s budget, according to Victoria Dillon, a spokeswoman for Slaughter.

The legislation, the MARCH for Military Women Act (Military Access to Reproductive Care and Health), has been proposed in previous Congresses without being enacted.

Finally this morning...we'll pause for a bona-fide hero. While the term is used at the drop of a hat by the media (which cheapens the term for everyone), Sfc Leroy Petry truly and honourably earned that honorific. It's been all over facebook, but just in case you missed it:

Last week it was announced that Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry would soon receive the Medal of Honor. Although there have been nine recipients of this award from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Petry is only the second to have survived the combat action that earned him America's highest award for combat heroism.

As the secretary of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, I am delighted that we now have two young men (Petry and Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta) who will, for many decades, join their fellow recipients in preserving the legacy of this iconic award.
The Medal of Honor is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.

The meritorious conduct must involve great personal bravery or self-sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his or her comrades and must have involved risk of life. There must be incontestable proof of the performance of the meritorious conduct, and each recommendation for the award must be considered on the standard of extraordinary merit.

During the combat action, Petry was shot through both legs. Fighting off the pain, he continued to engage a determined and aggressive enemy in an intense firefight. A live enemy grenade landed near two of Petry's fellow soldiers. Rather than diving for cover, Petry, ignoring his wounds, grabbed the grenade and tossed it away in order to protect his comrades-in-arms. As the grenade was leaving his hand, it exploded, blowing off Petry's right hand and causing other injuries. His quick and heroic action prevented the injury and possible death of his two buddies.

Morning

I'm very disappointed in Weiner as well, for the lying and the worst thing by far is that he gave Andrew Breitfart a tiny amount of credibility. Let the people of his district decide whether he sticks around or not but no one is going to take him seriously any more.

Weiner used the wrong brain.

Vancouver made a big mistake going head-hunting. A well-placed hip check would have sent an equivalent message. Instead, they got a group of enraged Bruins and their fans.

It will be interesting to see what action the league (doesn't) take(s). My prediction - one game suspension (for his own protection), but 0 wouldn't surprise me.

Good Morning.

Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the press, and distinguished guests, thank you for coming to my website today.

As a candidate for public office in the City of Waltham, I called this press conference this morning to solemnly promise to the voters of this city that I shall never tweet my wang.

I now open the floor for any questions.

Tri, I sadly believe the MARCH act will never get out of committee, not under this congress.

It appalls me how we are slowly creeping backwards with the rights of women.

I'm still confused about the Wiener story.

I don't think he will be in office by the end of the month, at this point.

Comment by wickedpam on 06/07/2011 13:22:32
Okay - I have to say I'm a little sad about the Wiener story.

I mean who doesn't know if they take some risque pic of themself? I was hoping maybe that they were for his wife and someone really did get into his account.

But if people like Vitter can stay in office then I don't see why Wiener can't.

In retrospect, Weiner's appearance on the Friday TRMS might be a bit telling now.

Rachel asked him flat out if the picture was him....Weiner was scrambly and did not deny that it was. He "didn't want to trap myself" by saying either yes or no.

So, point to Rachel...she almost nailed him with this.

One of the women who *outed* him tried to contact the Maddow show to spill the beans because she was pissed he didn't return her calls. HEre, check this out:
Weiss told RadarOnline and Star that she’d had no intention of outing Weiner, but that when he didn’t return messages she sent him over the past week since allegations of misconduct broke, she changed her mind.

“He was a dog and didn’t return my messages,” she told RadarOnline. “I discovered that Anthony is a bad man ... and a liar.”

Weiss apparently tried to give her story to MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” a politically focused outlet, Friday via Twitter. But the show either didn’t move or didn’t bite when she tweeted: “@maddow have a juicy political story i wnt to give u! how do i contact ur show?”
This woman is not a victim here. but this just smells to high heaven.

Something overlooked, lo these many years. How about the medical impact of the Great Recession?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- In 2009, the stress caused by the recession sent Katie Pfledderer to the hospital.

Her income as an advertising executive was cut by 20% and her workload increased. To make ends meet, she had to take an additional part-time job, but the strain was more than she could bear.

"I was tired all the time and then one morning I started crying and I couldn't breathe."

Pfledderer suffered a panic attack and was taken to the emergency room. She said she had been living in fear of losing her job in the midst of the Great Recession. "It was constant concern about what's going to happen next," the 28-year-old account executive said.

As the recovery sputters, many Americans, like Pfledderer, continue to struggle in the face of sluggish job growth and falling home prices -- and that's taking a toll on their overall well being.

Thirty-five percent of middle class Americans said they or someone in their household has experienced a physical symptom of stress related to the economy, according to a recent report by First Command Financial Services, a financial service provider.

Most common were anxiety, changes in weight, sleeplessness, low energy and irritability. "These are health conditions that we want people to be aware of," said Kathryn Power, director of the Center for Mental Health Services, a division of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Power said that at the start of the recession there was a sharp uptick in the number of calls to the Center's suicide hotline. "About 30% of the calls we get are related to economic distress," she said. "They were having emotional difficulties because of fear of their financial situation, fear they would lose their job, lose their home."

Say now, I just thought of something about Paul Revere and Sarah Palin.

She's claiming that Paul also warned the British. That may be true; according to the historical account, Mr. Revere warned the Brits that there were armed Patriots about.

After he was captured by regular army soldiers.

At the time, Paul wasn't sure if he was going to be arrested, shot, or what, so I would chalk that up to a little bravado. (Yeah, you got me, but we're going to kick your asses in the morning.)

For two more examples, look at 1. WWII history (At Bastogne, the Germans that came to demand surrender were sent on their way with the message "Nuts!"), and 2. Science Fiction (Luke telling the Emperor "You're wrong. Soon, I'll be dead, and you with me.)

Anyway, I digress.

Horton out for series.

But you could have guessed that from the hit. The question is, will Rome be out for the rest of the series too?

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton will miss the remainder of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs due to a severe concussion, Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced Tuesday.

The injury happened during the first period of Game 3 of the Bruins/Canucks Stanley Cup Final on Monday after a hit by Canuck defenseman Aaron Rome.

Horton had just passed the puck when Rome came at him from the blindside, lowered his shoulder and flattened Horton onto his back.

"It was a very late hit, and it was a hit to the head -- a hit that the NHL is trying to eliminate. I think the call was right with the major and the game misconduct and how the referees handled it. I think (Rome) is going to miss a few games," former Bruins captain Ray Bourque said.

Bourque said he believes the NHL has been coming down on late hits, and said he expects Rome to be punished.

"Looking back at the hit, you say was it a dirty hit," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "I think what I would call it is, it was a blindside hit that we've talked about taking out of the game. He made the pass. It was late. He came from the blindside. ... (I) say what I always say: 'Let the league take care of it.' We're trying to clean that out. Let's see where they go with that."

Marc Savard is still out from a dirty hit earlier this year. No suspension for Matt Cooke (who used to play for Vancouver...hmmm). It took two more head-hunting hits by Cooke to get the league to really come down on him. Sidney Crosby was out for 41 games, no suspension for Victor Hedman.

Zdeno Chara flattened Max Pacioretty's face against a stanchion and sent him to the hospital. Many expected a suspension, myself included - none came.

I see 1 game for Rome, maybe 2. 0 wouldn't surprise me.
