Last night, CBS's 60 Minutes reported the story of the prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. The show featured comments by Republican insiders about what they allege to be politically motivated prosecutions against Democratic officials. It was pretty damning stuff. In case you were not aware, the Governor is in jail for corruption. He took money for his campaign in return for favours to supporters.

It was pretty much summed up this way:
"They targeted Don Siegelman because they could not beat him fair and square. This was a Republican state and he was the one Democrat they could never get rid of."
Former Alabama AG, Grant Woods

The prosecution was led by a U.S. Attorney in Alabama who happened to be married to the campaign manager of Siegelman's Republican gubernatorial opponent. The story also weaved its way into the entire US attorney firing scandal. Karl Rove was named as conspirator in this case as well.

The story is explosive. The right wing is already attacking the whistleblower, Jill Simpson, and of course CBS. Congress and many of the fired US attorny's have asked for an investigation. The American Spectator wrote a piece slamming 60 Minutes, the White house is up in arms. It seems as though we may have a man in jail for his political affiliation, right here in America. Some countries call that a political prisoner. What may not be known about this case, is that during Siegelman's trial, his house was broken into a number of times, and during the investigation, Ms. Simpson was driven off the road mysteriously, while driving and her house had a fire. Sound familiar? Stories like this have quietly made the news for the past 7 years. CBS has stated that they still have a lot more information that did not make this story. So we WILL see more about this, I suspect.

Below are parts 1 & 2 as posted on you tube. You don't need to watch them now. But you do need the background to realize what happened last night.

If you were in Alabama, though, you probably could not see it. Most of this segment... AND THIS SEGMENT ONLY... was mysteriously blacked out. From Harpers magazine:
I am now hearing from readers all across Northern Alabama—from Decatur to Huntsville and considerably on down—that a mysterious “service interruption” blocked the broadcast of only the Siegelman segment of 60 Minutes this evening. The broadcaster is Channel 19 WHNT, which serves Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee. This station was noteworthy for its hostility to Siegelman and support for his Republican adversary. The station ran a trailer stating “We apologize that you missed the first segment of 60 Minutes tonight featuring ‘The Prosecution of Don Siegelman.’ It was a techincal problem with CBS out of New York.” I contacted CBS News in New York and was told that “there is no delicate way to put this: the WHNT claim is not true. There were no transmission difficulties. The problems were peculiar to Channel 19, which had the signal and had functioning transmitters.” I was told that the decision to blacken screens across Northern Alabama “could only have been an editorial call.” Channel 19 is owned by Oak Hill Capital Partners, who can be contacted through Rhonda Barnat, 212-371-5999 or [email protected]. Oak Hill Partners represents interests of the Bass family, which contribute heavily to the Republican Party. Viewers displeased about the channel’s decision to censor the broadcast should express their views directly to the station management or to the owners.

WHNT, as well as many other news outlets are blaming CBS for this glitch. That simply doesn't make sense. CBS wanted the story out. WHNT did not.

In our America, we have a man in jail for being a democrat and the people who this DIRECTLY affected were censored from watching it. Is this America? This is something that requires a full investigation by congress and the FCC. (That is, unless it John McCain doesn't already own the FCC. [see: John McCain Lobbyist Scandal]

Oh... and speaking of John McCain, I stumbled upon this From Birmingham online,
Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods told "60 Minutes" in an interview aired Sunday night that "red flags" surrounding the case against former Gov. Don Siegelman make him think the case is politically motivated.

Woods, a Republican, said Siegelman's having been prosecuted over campaign contributions made him question the prosecution.
There is a lot more at that link, but something that should be noted as well... Grant Woods? He is Godfather to one of John McCain's children, he is also on John McCain's election committee. That isn't an aquaintence, that is a very close and dear friend.

Wow, A "politically" motivated case? You think? One that was censored in Alabama involving John McCain, campaign donations for favors, Karl Rove, fires and break-ins? If you really go back and check the history, you will see that Siegleman's last election was lost by a very narrow margin, in a state that had election machine errors. Funny thing those Diebold machines are.

Is this for real?
YES. In America. We have a man in jail for being a democrat and the media trying to censor it away. What a criminal disgrace.

:peace: and
-----

And if Hillary is the nominee, her alienate progressive Democrats strategy might drive people to vote for him and insure President McCain.

Jon was all kinds of awesome. Not as flashy as Billy Crystal (and who doesn't miss Billy's Oscar songs!), but way more relaxed than he had any right to be considering the writers' strike.

WEll with her campaign now floating that Obama picture (see link below) her sarcastic campaign speech this weekend, the anger over the Barack Flyers, and all the other stuff she has pulled, I hope people make the choice, more of the same negativity or Obama.

BTW, I realized something, it is NOT universal Health CARE.

It is universal HEAlth Insurance. Big diff. France has Universal HEalth care. Both candidates still involve FOR profit health insurance carriers.

It is better than what we have now, but it isn't universal Health care.

I can't say for certain, but perhaps the idea is to force the insurance companies to act fairly. Gradually, they will get out of the health insurance biz because they can't maintain their obscene profits, and then the government can take over.

Romney may rejoin the race? From the LA Times:

Breaking News: Mitt Romney to rejoin GOP race?

Josh Romney, one of former Gov. Mitt Romney's five sons, says it's "possible" his father may rejoin the race for the White House, either as a vice presidential candidate or seek to become the Republican Party's standard bearer if the campaign of Sen. John McCain falters.

The 60-year-old Romney, who "suspended" his campaign for the GOP nomination after a disappointing showing on Super Tuesday and a week later endorsed McCain, was taking a break from politics this weekend on a skiing vacation in Utah with his wife Ann, according to his 32-year-old son.

The elder Romney, who was unable to assemble sufficient conservative support to thwart McCain, has made no public comment since the McCain camp was rocked....

OH, that could be just RICH!

The Obama Campaign comments.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused the Clinton campaign Monday of "shameful offensive fear-mongering" by circulating a photo as an attempted smear.

Plouffe was reacting to a banner headline on the Drudge Report saying that aides to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) had e-mailed a photo calling attention to the African roots of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"The photo, taken in 2006, shows the Democrat front-runner dressed as a Somali Elder, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya," the Drudge Report said.

The Clinton campaign did not deny the charge, but did not comment further.

Plouffe said in a statement: “On the very day that Senator Clinton is giving a speech about restoring respect for America in the world, her campaign has engaged in the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we’ve seen from either party in this election. This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire, and it’s exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans of all parties and diminishes respect for America in the world," said Plouffe.

Interesting. When I first searched for two adults, I got $140 and a king only.

When I changed the search to three adults, I got several other options starting at $129 per night.

Bottom line - it looks like while we were hesitating, we lost the best prices.

Settling on the date was only half the battle - the other half was deciding on the hotel. The term "herding cats" certainly applied to this venture.

You could've booked when it was 104, and cancelled if we agreed on a different hotel.
