Last night, CBS's 60 Minutes reported the story of the prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. The show featured comments by Republican insiders about what they allege to be politically motivated prosecutions against Democratic officials. It was pretty damning stuff. In case you were not aware, the Governor is in jail for corruption. He took money for his campaign in return for favours to supporters.

It was pretty much summed up this way:
"They targeted Don Siegelman because they could not beat him fair and square. This was a Republican state and he was the one Democrat they could never get rid of."
Former Alabama AG, Grant Woods

The prosecution was led by a U.S. Attorney in Alabama who happened to be married to the campaign manager of Siegelman's Republican gubernatorial opponent. The story also weaved its way into the entire US attorney firing scandal. Karl Rove was named as conspirator in this case as well.

The story is explosive. The right wing is already attacking the whistleblower, Jill Simpson, and of course CBS. Congress and many of the fired US attorny's have asked for an investigation. The American Spectator wrote a piece slamming 60 Minutes, the White house is up in arms. It seems as though we may have a man in jail for his political affiliation, right here in America. Some countries call that a political prisoner. What may not be known about this case, is that during Siegelman's trial, his house was broken into a number of times, and during the investigation, Ms. Simpson was driven off the road mysteriously, while driving and her house had a fire. Sound familiar? Stories like this have quietly made the news for the past 7 years. CBS has stated that they still have a lot more information that did not make this story. So we WILL see more about this, I suspect.

Below are parts 1 & 2 as posted on you tube. You don't need to watch them now. But you do need the background to realize what happened last night.

If you were in Alabama, though, you probably could not see it. Most of this segment... AND THIS SEGMENT ONLY... was mysteriously blacked out. From Harpers magazine:
I am now hearing from readers all across Northern Alabama—from Decatur to Huntsville and considerably on down—that a mysterious “service interruption” blocked the broadcast of only the Siegelman segment of 60 Minutes this evening. The broadcaster is Channel 19 WHNT, which serves Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee. This station was noteworthy for its hostility to Siegelman and support for his Republican adversary. The station ran a trailer stating “We apologize that you missed the first segment of 60 Minutes tonight featuring ‘The Prosecution of Don Siegelman.’ It was a techincal problem with CBS out of New York.” I contacted CBS News in New York and was told that “there is no delicate way to put this: the WHNT claim is not true. There were no transmission difficulties. The problems were peculiar to Channel 19, which had the signal and had functioning transmitters.” I was told that the decision to blacken screens across Northern Alabama “could only have been an editorial call.” Channel 19 is owned by Oak Hill Capital Partners, who can be contacted through Rhonda Barnat, 212-371-5999 or rb@abmac.com. Oak Hill Partners represents interests of the Bass family, which contribute heavily to the Republican Party. Viewers displeased about the channel’s decision to censor the broadcast should express their views directly to the station management or to the owners.

WHNT, as well as many other news outlets are blaming CBS for this glitch. That simply doesn't make sense. CBS wanted the story out. WHNT did not.

In our America, we have a man in jail for being a democrat and the people who this DIRECTLY affected were censored from watching it. Is this America? This is something that requires a full investigation by congress and the FCC. (That is, unless it John McCain doesn't already own the FCC. [see: John McCain Lobbyist Scandal]

Oh... and speaking of John McCain, I stumbled upon this From Birmingham online,
Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods told "60 Minutes" in an interview aired Sunday night that "red flags" surrounding the case against former Gov. Don Siegelman make him think the case is politically motivated.

Woods, a Republican, said Siegelman's having been prosecuted over campaign contributions made him question the prosecution.
There is a lot more at that link, but something that should be noted as well... Grant Woods? He is Godfather to one of John McCain's children, he is also on John McCain's election committee. That isn't an aquaintence, that is a very close and dear friend.

Wow, A "politically" motivated case? You think? One that was censored in Alabama involving John McCain, campaign donations for favors, Karl Rove, fires and break-ins? If you really go back and check the history, you will see that Siegleman's last election was lost by a very narrow margin, in a state that had election machine errors. Funny thing those Diebold machines are.

Is this for real?
YES. In America. We have a man in jail for being a democrat and the media trying to censor it away. What a criminal disgrace.

:peace: and
-----

Jon was all kinds of awesome. Not as flashy as Billy Crystal (and who doesn't miss Billy's Oscar songs!), but way more relaxed than he had any right to be considering the writers' strike.

It is better than what we have now, but it isn't universal Health care.

I can't say for certain, but perhaps the idea is to force the insurance companies to act fairly. Gradually, they will get out of the health insurance biz because they can't maintain their obscene profits, and then the government can take over.

Romney may rejoin the race? From the LA Times:

Breaking News: Mitt Romney to rejoin GOP race?

Josh Romney, one of former Gov. Mitt Romney's five sons, says it's "possible" his father may rejoin the race for the White House, either as a vice presidential candidate or seek to become the Republican Party's standard bearer if the campaign of Sen. John McCain falters.

The 60-year-old Romney, who "suspended" his campaign for the GOP nomination after a disappointing showing on Super Tuesday and a week later endorsed McCain, was taking a break from politics this weekend on a skiing vacation in Utah with his wife Ann, according to his 32-year-old son.

The elder Romney, who was unable to assemble sufficient conservative support to thwart McCain, has made no public comment since the McCain camp was rocked....

OH, that could be just RICH!

The Obama Campaign comments.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused the Clinton campaign Monday of "shameful offensive fear-mongering" by circulating a photo as an attempted smear.

Plouffe was reacting to a banner headline on the Drudge Report saying that aides to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) had e-mailed a photo calling attention to the African roots of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"The photo, taken in 2006, shows the Democrat front-runner dressed as a Somali Elder, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya," the Drudge Report said.

The Clinton campaign did not deny the charge, but did not comment further.

Plouffe said in a statement: “On the very day that Senator Clinton is giving a speech about restoring respect for America in the world, her campaign has engaged in the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we’ve seen from either party in this election. This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire, and it’s exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans of all parties and diminishes respect for America in the world," said Plouffe.

Interesting. When I first searched for two adults, I got $140 and a king only.

When I changed the search to three adults, I got several other options starting at $129 per night.

Bottom line - it looks like while we were hesitating, we lost the best prices.

Settling on the date was only half the battle - the other half was deciding on the hotel. The term "herding cats" certainly applied to this venture.

You could've booked when it was 104, and cancelled if we agreed on a different hotel.

The Clinton Capaign has commented and is now on the record... HOWEVER...
Clinton campaign doesn't deny distributing photo, launches counter-attack

=====================================

And I have some info coming about the Weather underground story as well... if this story WERE true... it would have made Barack about 10 years old when he associated with thesee people... who have since gone on to doing some AMAZING work for the underserved in CHicago. Plus there are rumours that that story as well may have come from the Clinton campaign.

I will get the info asap.

************From Buzz Flash, regarding the Weather Underground group: ***************

But what got me riled up again about Senator Clinton’s most recent campaign tactics was not so much the over-the-top and sadly ironic news conference regarding two mailers by the Obama campaign in Ohio. (Clinton’s campaign had sent out a mailer in New Hampshire that said that Obama couldn’t be trusted on Choice, when he had a 100% Planned Parenthood rating during his senate years in Illinois, and is continuing that voting record in the U.S. Senate.)

No, what got us in a lather were little noticed e-mails by a Clinton staffer goading the press to follow-up on an allegation that Obama had ties to “radical groups.”

The Clinton spokesperson, Phil Singer, was in gutter mode when he pushed a story -- which was either placed in the New York Sun and Politico by the Clinton or McCain campaigns – that tried to connect Obama to the radical “Weather Underground” that was in its heyday when Obama wasn’t even a teenager.

What was the connection? Well, Obama, many years ago, had an Illinois Senate fundraiser and accepted a small donation from William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Were they both in the violent “Weather Underground” when Obama was in elementary school? Yes. But trying to connect a ten-year-old Obama, living in Indonesia and Hawaii, with a radical, long-ago defunct movement is inexcusable.

It is another sleazy attack that Senator Clinton supporters will have to compromise their souls to support.

MUCH more at the link.

Clinton Camp Pushes O-Bomber Links: Ignores Her Own Radical Ties

The Hillary Clinton campaign pushed to reporters today stories about Barack Obama and his ties to former members of a radical domestic terrorist group -- but did not note that as president, Clinton's husband pardoned more than a dozen convicted violent radicals, including a member of the same group mentioned in the Obama stories.

"Wonder what the Republicans will do with this issue," mused Clinton spokesman Phil Singer in one e-mail to the media, containing a New York Sun article reporting a $200 contribution from William Ayers, a founding member of the Weather Underground, to Obama in 2001. (Obama's ties to the radical group first surfaced last week in a Bloomberg News article.)

In a separate e-mail, Singer forwarded an article from Politico.com reporting on a 1995 event at a private home that brought Obama together with Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, another former member of the radical group.

Opting to leave any attacks on the issue to the GOP may be wise, as attacks from Clinton could backfire. In his final day in office, President Clinton pardoned another one-time member of the Weather Underground, Susan L. Rosenberg, after she had served 16 years in prison on federal charges.

A report from last year about the new Hillary and Matt Drudge relationship.

Yesterday, it emerged that the caring went two ways. The New York Times reported that the Clinton campaign had grown adept at using the Drudge Report to leak news that could steal the thunder from rivals, or to solidify her position as the frontrunner for the Democratic party's presidential nomination for next year.

Earlier this month, Ms Clinton's staff leaked campaign fundraising data to the website just as her rival for the nomination, Barack Obama, was to deliver a policy speech on Iraq - and a crucial 20 minutes before the official release of the information. The story on Ms Clinton's fundraising prowess dominated the news cycle.

The New York Times reported that the Clinton campaign had opened a direct line of communication to Drudge through a former Democratic national committee official, Tracy Sefl. Ms Sefl refused to comment yesterday, but the revelation was widely seen as a sign of Drudge's importance in the US media, despite his reclusive nature and a history of getting some stories spectacularly wrong.

Random switch of subject matter (the blog's sorta quiet now anyway) to Sicko, which, unfortunately, lost yesterday as best documentary. Mind you, I wasn't disappointed about the winner. Frankly, I would have been happy if any or all of the documentaries had won. The subject matters for the whole category were compelling.

But about Sicko - I'm beginning to think Michael Moore needs to produce under a pseudonym for a few years or a decade. I was at a non-political gathering over the weekend and the conversation drifted to politics. A few of those present were Obama supporters and somehow the subject of Sicko wandered in.

One woman started bitching that the problems of people eating fast food were their own and not one for the government. (Uh..... "Supersize Me" much?....)

The one man in the group pushed that people had to take responsibility for themselves (he wasn't an Obama guy, btw). I hesistated to bring up that those who were unemployed couldn't very well afford to pay for insurance and what on earth did that have to do with responsiblity for themselves? The gathering was really more social and I'd never met any of those there before.

When I mentioned that some insurance companies let people die rather than allow live-saving procedures, the woman who had been bitching about fast food basically denounced the whole idea and complained that Michael Moore's movies were totally one-sided. The other Obama supporter agreed with this assessment.

The statement that the "other side" is all over the main-stream media and I feel that MM's movies do a lot towards balancing that was on the tip of my tongue, but, again, I held back because I wasn't comfortable challenging things with a group of strangers. btw, they all knew each other - I was the newcomer.

My only statement about the issue towards the end was that they were all judging the film without seeing it. That was the equivalent of a reviewer writing a lengthy review about a film he/she hadn't seen because they didn't like the director. You can't judge what you haven't seen. One person acknowledged my point (but I don't remember which).

I let the whole matter slide. But it concerns me that MM's movies are automatically condemned as being biased.

What might happen, I wonder, if he created a shadow company, produced a documentary under a different name without even narrating, gave it a somewhat different *feel* and released it that way.

There shouldn't be much notice paid to a documentary with a similar style since MM has been so influential over the past few years. Is it possible taking his name off until after the reviews etc were in might help in some way?

Just a thought.

Shelagh,

I think that you are on to something here. I've always appreciated Michael Moore's films (from Roger & Me through Farenheit 911 to Sicko), but I've encountered that knee jerk (with the emphasis on JERK) reaction from many people before. I think that just changing his nomdeplume for at least his next few projects might widen his audience, and I do think that this would be a better, more informed country, if people could get past their initial bias and expand their horizons/views/thoughts.

Nice comment :D

Well at this point, any story put out by the AP, authored by Nedra Pickler will just reek of shilling for me. you all may not know this, but I am geeky enough to know a few of my favourite AP reporters.
