ThinkProgress has been reporting on the disturbing campaign by radical anti-abortion groups to pass “personhood” amendments to state constitutions that would define life as beginning the moment an egg is fertilized. These laws would not only criminalize abortion, but outlaw common forms of contraception as well.
HOYE: Any birth control that ends the life of a human being will be impacted by this measure.
REHM: So that would then include the IUD [intra-uterine device]. What about the birth control pill?
HOYE: If that falls into the same category, yes.
REHM: So you’re saying that the birth control pill could be considered as taking the life of a human being?
HOYE: I’m saying that once the egg and the oocyte come together and you have that single-celled embryo, at that point you have human life, you’ve got a human being and we’re taking the life of a human being with some forms of birth control and if birth control falls into that category, yes I am.
The National Right to Life organization has refused to promote it. Even the Catholic Bishops have refused to endorse the amendment, noting that the bill is so extreme, it could jeopardize their more serious efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade:In the letter [Jackson Bishop Joseph Latino] called Personhood Mississippi “a noble initiative.” However, he said, “I join with Catholic bishops in several other states in not endorsing personhood petitions to be circulated in our Catholic parishes. We have committed ourselves to working for a federal amendment and feel the push for a state amendment could ultimately harm our efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.”
Rebeccca Kiessling has long been an advocate for the personhood rights for every human being, no matter the circumstances of their conception or birth. Rebecca will be answering the “tough” questions on abortion, specifically discussing children conceived in rape, as she was. Conceived in rape and targeted for abortion, Rebecca will explain why Mississippi voters should vote “Yes” on Amendment 26, and what the abortion “exceptions” proposed by many really mean. “I know that most people don’t put a face to this issue. For them, it’s just a concept — a quick cliche, and they sweep it under the rug and forget about it,” Rebecca explains on her website, rebeccakiessling.com. “I do hope that, as a child of rape, I can help to put a face, a voice, and a story to this issue.” Rebecca passionately defends the rights of preborn babies, and was recently quoted at a Personhood hearing as saying, “If you really care about a rape victim, you would want to protect her from the abortion, and not the baby. A baby is not the worst thing that could ever happen to a rape victim – an abortion is.”
"The medical community has really been quite clear about when pregnancy begins," says Dan Grossman, an obstetrician/gynecologist at the University of California, San Francisco, "and that definition is that pregnancy begins once implantation occurs."
That would be the implantation of the fertilized egg into the woman's uterus. One reason doctors don't consider a woman pregnant until after implantation is a practical one — that's when pregnancy can be detected by hormone changes in her urine.
But there's another reason, Grossman says. "It's really only about half of those fertilized eggs [that] actually result in an ongoing pregnancy."
The rest of the fertilized eggs either never begin dividing or never implant. Or they do implant but spontaneously abort. That can happen so early in pregnancy that the woman never even knows she was pregnant.

Mala, I've seen lots of Black widows this year. Found a rather large family of them under a rock right next to my front steps, later found a large MAMA of one in my car!! (We don't talk about that, so that my family will still ride in the car).
If one should bite you, put ice on it to draw out the venom as well as tie a tourniquet, if the bite is on the arm or leg, to slow the spread of venom.

I can understand not wanted to spread the car news around - I wouldn't ride in mine either if I found one. It just seems odd that we suddenly seeing so many. Its freaking me out!
I've heard that the bite is really painful and you have to get to the emergency room asap. Good thing I live less then a mile from the hospital I guess![]()

It was making me absolutely sick how Haley Barbour kept avoiding an outright disapproval of that referendum on the Sunday shows. OH IT GOES TOO FAR BUT I WON'T SAY DON'T VOTE FOR IT. What a scumbag.. it's a great thing for that state that he's term-limited and can't run today for a third term.

I think you might be correct. I am VERY concerned that the VA Senate is going to be taken over with a GOP majority.

In our area, no -- haven't seen those. It's kinda peculiar tho -- hasn't the GOP/Tea Party spent the past few years making sure people are mad?

Say gang, circling back to the blog topic…
Mrs. TriSec and I have actually been there. Before Javi, “the usual method†was not yielding the desired results, so we had some professional intervention. We wound up going with the GIFT process, and prodded Mrs. TriSec into producing more eggs than usual via chemical means. We never were able to produce a significant number of fertilized eggs, so after 4 cycles of failed implantation, we did indeed give up. There were about a half-dozen eggs left over, so the clinic asked us what we wanted to do. We were of the same mind; it didn’t help us, but if anyone else can benefit, go for it…so we donated them.
In Mississippi, that means we’re guilty of murder, right? But we also donated; would that be child abandonment under the new personhood statutes? And then we never stopped “practicingâ€Â…it’s unknown if anything ever happened and failed to implant in the intervening years. (Before Mrs. TriSec had the surgery and rendered the whole matter moot.)
Hopefully not TMI, but I believe our lengthy saga has been well-documented on these intertubes previously. As I have pointed out before, it’s the law of unintended consequences. The way a lot of anti-abortion legislation is worded, it’s also anti-birth control, and anti-advanced reproductive therapy, too. I’ll drag Bob & Raine into this mess too…you ain’t making any babies, you can’t be married in this country anymore!

Shit if that's a silver quarter you should make sure it doesn't end up in a vending machine! Thing's probably worth like 50-100 bucks at today's inflated commodity rates!
