We've Come For YOU!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 03/18/2012 16:21:17

Well, Velvveta has overslept, and now must come up with some semblance of brilliance to meet the level of bar that has been raised recently with my fellow posters. BobR's always poignant and thought-provoking posts as well as Raine, who even in the depths of sadness and trauma can write scathing, excellent posts such as her recent "egu-ALL-ity" and yesterday's post by TriSec which was so on point and interesting that it could well be a description for an advanced studies class at an Ivy League!

And so we come to Sunday. Thank whatever God you worship or deny, for large Sunday newspapers and sports on the TV that few people read this dribble. I apologize to be the one to bring the bar back down to extra low.

The penis! Do we need it?

Seriously, with the attack on women - which, as the mother of a teenage girl infuriates me to NO end - I am left to ponder this question. I don't hate men and certainly most men in this country don't agree with the current attack on women's health; though it'd be nice if they would raise their voice a bit more (current company excepted).

I'm reminded of that poem attributed to Martin Niemoller that goes:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

As you know women are currently being attacked as sluts and prostitutes because we take a pill that will prevent us from getting pregnant. But ignored in this debate (other than the obvious) is that men also take many pills and procedures for their sexual health. I have ads on my TV every day for "ED" medication so a husband can get his wife into a bathtub overlooking mountaintops or a dude in a Trojan outfit and riding a horse pitching condoms. I even get PSA's telling men over a certain age to get something called a prostate exam.

Wait.... what? Is my insurance paying for men to have prostate exams? I'm LIVID! How dare I pay for something that I don't even have? My insurance dollars paying for this is not fair since I don't have a prostate!

This just adds to my anger at already having to pay for men to get Viagra and Cialis prescriptions. I say if you're too old or too damaged to "do it" then you shouldn't be "doing it". You manwhore!

Thankfully, female scientists are frantically working on making men, at least the ones like Rush Limbaugh, completely unneeded from our society.

Scientists report today on the ability to create sperm from bone marrow cells. Initially performed in men, the technique could potentially be performed in women and lead to a sperm cell made from a woman’s body. You got it right- that cell could then fertilize an egg leading to the first female-female conception in human history.

As a fertility specialist I couldn’t resist this story and wanted to share the reality and the hype. Prof. Karim Nayernia, Professor of Stem Cell Biology at the Instatute of Human Genetics at the Univeristy of Mewcastle on Tyne led the project reported in Biology of Reproduction. A summary of the study was released in the Independent today.

The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.

But the results also raise the prospect of being able to take bone-marrow tissue from women and coaxing the stem cells within the female tissue to develop into sperm cells, said Professor Karim Nayernia of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne
.

I await the day that my granddaughter can decide to stay at home from her job as CEO of the industry that turns animal waste into safe clean fuel for the high speed trains that can run over land and water, to make a baby all by herself!

It's time more men speak up, otherwise, you'll be next. (Again, present company excluded).

Amen Vel!

I have been toiling in the earth today, so I Regret not commenting sooner. I do -- but I'm so glad you wrote this!

I rarely see adds that recommend women get a PAP smear, or a breast exam, but men? Prostrate ads all over the place. BAthtubs and sailboats.... and ball exams...

I would like very much for men to figure out (again-- to our regular members, you know this is not directed towards you) that Women need you not for your help, per say -- but becuase this DOES affect you.

Something I did not quote from a link I put in that blog on Thursday was this:
I humbly argue that it is time to bring men into this sexual judgement limelight. It is time to acknowledge that 100% of pregnancies are caused by sperm. It is time for men to be as accountable to the politics of sex as women have been. It is time for a bold-faced acceptance of the fact that we, women and men alike, are all fucking and we are all accountable to the realities of fucking. Right now it appears that sex for women is considered a tremendously serious act with grave consequences, whereas for men it’s recreational and all risks can be mitigated with a trip to Walgreen’s for condoms and therefore has no political repercussions. That attitude is why the obstacles that anti-fucking forces are trying to throw up – limited contraceptive access, forcing women to carry pregnancies by making them difficult to prevent or terminate – are targeted exclusively at one half of the fucking population and it’s time for that to stop.

Just because we ladies catch doesn't mean the pitcher should not be held to some responsibility. (you see what I did there? I made a baseball analogy) -- yeah it was a bad analogy. but somewhere in my mind it works.

Men, I love y'all but this attack is for you to fight against too.

Things that seem to get lost in the debate:

1) If a women is a "slut" for taking the pill to avoid getting pregnant, what does that make the man who is having sex with her? Isn't he a slut too? Why the double standard?

2) If you're old enough to need ED medication, then you're to old to be procreating, and - according to the holier-than-thou crowd, sex is only for procreation. So: either the drug is not necessary, or it should only be prescribed to married men whose wives are NOT taking birth control.

3) Per the birth control logic, vasectomies should be outlawed, since it means that the man intends to have sex without procreating... either that, or he should be labeled a "slut".
