I need a drink
Author: Raine    Date: 03/10/2008 12:38:56

Water. Our most treasured resource. The thing none of us can live without, and we are forcing our troops to bath in tainted, filthy dirty water.
Water Makes US Troops in Iraq Sick
Dozens of U.S. troops in Iraq fell sick at bases using "unmonitored and potentially unsafe" water supplied by the military and a contractor once owned by Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, the Pentagon's internal watchdog says.

A report obtained by The Associated Press said soldiers experienced skin abscesses, cellulitis, skin infections, diarrhea and other illnesses after using discolored, smelly water for personal hygiene and laundry at five U.S. military sites in Iraq.

The Defense Department's inspector general's report, which could be released as early as Monday, found water quality problems between March 2004 and February 2006 at three sites run by contractor KBR Inc., and between January 2004 and December 2006 at two military-operated locations.
[...]

"Therefore, water suppliers exposed U.S. forces to unmonitored and potentially unsafe water," at the military sites by late 2006, the report said.

The problems did not extend to troops' drinking water, but rather to water used for washing, bathing, shaving and cleaning. Water used for hygiene and laundry must meet minimum safety standards under military regulations because of the potential for harmful exposure through the eyes, nose, mouth, cuts and wounds.
but wait! there is more! Here in America, precriptions drugs have been found in our tap water.
Here are some of the key test results obtained by the AP:
• Officials in Philadelphia said testing there discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water, including medicines for pain, infection, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems. Sixty-three pharmaceuticals or byproducts were found in the city's watersheds.

• Anti-epileptic and anti-anxiety medications were detected in a portion of the treated drinking water for 18.5 million people in Southern California.

• Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey analyzed a Passaic Valley Water Commission drinking water treatment plant, which serves 850,000 people in Northern New Jersey, and found a metabolized angina medicine and the mood-stabilizing carbamazepine in drinking water.

• A sex hormone was detected in San Francisco's drinking water.

• The drinking water for Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas tested positive for six pharmaceuticals.

• Three medications, including an antibiotic, were found in drinking water supplied to Tucson, Ariz.

Granted, these are trace amounts, but coupled with the issue we see happening in Iraq, it makes me very concerned for our water supply world wide. We are supposedly the greatest, richest and most powerful country in the world, and yet, our soldiers are in the Middle East bathing in water that sounds like it is from a third-world country, and here at home, we have so many chemicals in our tap water that we do not know what the long term effects actually are.

I am sure that lawmakers will be falling all over themselves wondering how this could happen. Well let me tell you how. This is just another result of no government oversite and deregulation. This is the result of those that tout free markets and competition among public utilities. This is the result of so called "Small Government" This is what happens when profits for companies like KBR become more important than the people they are supposed to serve. This is what happens when utilities have to scramble for water wherever they can find it, and don't use the resources needed to make sure our water supply is safe.

This doesn't have to happen. However, as long as people tout all the Republican policies that put these things in place, this is what we will get. You can drink to that.

:peace: and

That is just the way things are with me, I have always gotten up early. But it has gotten worse!

Sometimes I need to leave for work at 4 a.m.

Morning, folks. Looks like just a drive-by for me today.

Thanks to my esteemed congressman (Ed Markey, D-MA) and his "New Eastern Standard Time" (If we're on daylight savings for a majority of the year, shouldn't that be the standard?), we're facing a multitude of issues here in the mines today.

Not the least of which is that batch creation failed over the weekend (affecting 100,000 claims) and the system has so far been down all morning....

:drink: <-- starting early

Mornin' Raine. From now on, I'm checking here before performing any of my morning rituals. I.e., if I had read this first, I would have started my day with a cocktail instead of a nice big glass of water. Any excuse I can find...

Hey ya'll, a friend of mine (and some of yours) made a great point about Hillary and her "experience" - she said that Hillary saying that she has foreign policy experience is like Diane Farve saying she has quarterbacking experience.

Great point. (Though I had to think about who "Farve" was - I personally, would have used a baseball comparison).

Carlyle Fund Seeks Halt to Liquidation

LONDON — The Carlyle Group’s troubled mortgage-debt investment fund, Carlyle Capital, said on Monday that it had asked lenders to halt further liquidation of collateral worth as much as $16 billion while the two sides discuss ways to repay debt.

The fund, which invests mainly in triple-A rated mortgage securities issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has received $400 million in margin calls, and some of its lenders started to liquidate collateral for $5 billion of debt. Banks are asking for their money back amid concerns the economic climate may deteriorate further.

The Carlyle fund said on Monday that it “requested a standstill agreement whereby its lenders would refrain from foreclosing and liquidating their collateral, and we are awaiting responses.”

On the login screen, there should be a link for "reset password". That should cause the board to create a new random password and email it to you. Once you get the email, you can login and change your password to whatever you prefer.

FWIW - there is a link here on the blog (conveniently located in the "Links" section ) for "4F: Contact the Staff". You can use this anytime you have a problem on the board OR on the blog...

That's it exactly. I never understand when someone that's living hand-to-mouth (or even middle class) complains that liberals are always trying to raise taxes on the rich. I think people either have an inflated view of where they are on the economic scale, or they assume they're going to be rich in the near future and don't want to have to pay the taxes.

I always felt like I'd be VERY happy to be paying taxes in the 6-figure range, because it would mean I was doing VERY well financially.

Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) linked to prostitution ring

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his Fifth Avenue apartment early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He scheduled an announcement for 2:15 after inquiries from the Times.

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.

But a person with knowledge of the governor’s role said that the person believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.

The governor’s travel records show that he was in Washington in mid-February. One of the clients described in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, the Emperors Club VIP on the night of Feb. 13.

Mr. Spitzer appeared on a CNBC television show at 7 a.m. the next morning. Later in the morning, he testified before a Congressional committee.

An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.

He had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.

Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

“”This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. ”It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”

Comment by Raine on 03/10/2008 19:19:34
:thud: Listening right now to MSNBC, Alan Derschowitz has said that he indeed DID hire a prostitute, but denies him being involved with the ring itself. According to Derschowitz, he was a "John" and accuses the NYT of a far-reaching headline. ..... I have placed a phone call to a few friends in NY to see what the local spin is. PLUS... we have a good few NY's here... what are your ears to the ground saying? I find it VERY hard to believe that he would be involved with Money Laundering and a prostitution ring. ...

I just checked some of the reporting on the matter on RNN (strangely bypassing the NYC stations and News 12). Didn't seem like they had much more info. I believe Spitzer's approval rating has dropped pretty low because of the scandals and missteps like the immigrant driver's license issue which created a backlash. Since I just got home, I will have to do some more research.

And Peter King is a wanker. Get rid of him and the entire Long Island delegation goes blue.

You know, the information Randi is sharing right now really bothers me, but if I were a Clinton supporter (not that I'm anti-Clinton, I just prefer Obama), I would not have stuck around to hear it.

one needs q/t to haer the audicons?

Hmmm.. BobR is out for the evening, I may have to discuss this with him.

The audicons, as far as I thought would use the computers default sound player. I do not think that members need to get a new program to listen.

All the audicons are Quicktime files. Quicktime is already on my home computers but sometimes if I'm in a different work station I have to downlaod Quicktime to get them on those computers.

Apparently the info on the prostitute was picked up through a federal wiretap. Is this the kind of information that was being picked up through Bush's wiretap program?

Quote by Raine: Does anyone know where I can get information regarding new Obama endorsements? I just read that The former Secretaries of the Army, Navy and The Air Force during the Clinton Administration will be endorsing Obama at 1 p.m. today. That is kinda a big endorsement if this is true.
Confirmed. This does not bode well for the hillary Clinton campaign.
According to a press release from the Obama campaign Monday morning, the candidate's staff will appear with top military brass today "to discuss why Obama has demonstrated the judgment and has the experience to be Commander In Chief." "Today, former service secretaries for each of the Armed Forces Ð Clifford Alexander, Jr. (US Army), Richard Danzig (US Navy), and F. Whitten Peters (US Air Force) Ð will host a press conference in Washington, DC to discuss why Obama has demonstrated the judgment and has the experience to be Commander In Chief," the release writes. Among those attending: "Secretary Clifford Alexander, Jr. (US Army Ð Carter Administration), Secretary Richard Danzig (US Navy Ð Clinton Administration) and Secretary F. Whitten Peters (US Air Force Ð Clinton Administration." The event will be held at the United Food and Commercial Workers, 1775 K Street, NW - 11th Floor at 1pm today.
No MSNBC press about this as of 5:55 today.

OK, what does everyone make of this report?

He hid bribes? That doesn't make sense at all. There is a little tiny part of me that is concerned about a spiegleman being done to Spitzer

......

Look if he had an affair and took this woman to DC FROM NY via a train or cab, that is reason enough for him to resign... the rest is strangley questionable.

Comment by jd_in_ny on 03/10/2008 23:44:52
I don't know if an affair alone would be enough for me to need him to resign. It certainly wouldn't help things go smoother politically, but I'm not going to speculate because that apparently is not the case here.

Soliciting prostitution is illegal. He's a lawyer, he should be following and upholding the law, not breaking it.

From TPMMuckraker....

It is the closest thing I've seen to a complete explanation of the surveillance program the Bush Administration has assembled.

Siobhan Gorman of The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that the National Security Agency has assembled what some intelligence officials admit is a driftnet for domestic and foreign communications.

Here's the way the whole thing works, according to Gorman: into the NSA's massive database goes data collected by the Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Treasury. This information includes data about email (recipient and sender address, subject, time sent), internet searches (sites visited and searches conducted), phone calls (incoming and outgoing numbers, length of call, location), financial information (wire transfers, credit-card use, information about bank accounts), and information from the DHS about airline passengers.

Then the NSA's software analyzes this data for indications of terrorist activity. When it hits upon a suspicious pattern, the NSA "feeds its findings into the effort the administration calls the Terrorist Surveillance Program and shares some of that information with other U.S. security agencies.”

Comment by Raine on 03/10/2008 23:55:22
JD, as a former NY'r, I REALLY think this is devastating to the NY dems.

My post on the 4f MB

Forget his wife, forget all the rest of the crap. IF he got caught breaking the law with a prostitute WHILE he was in DC for a congressional testimony... I have no tolerance for this in the Democratic party during these times.

The dems allowed David Vitter to keep his position... we have consistantly called that party out for the hyposcrisy... we need to hold ourselves to the same standards.

Comment by jd_in_ny on 03/10/2008 23:58:39
As a NYer, a lawyer, and someone who voted enthusiastically for Spitzer, I am devastated, and I think that he should resign immediately. Just for breaking the law. Period, the end.

if it were an affair... I REALLY wopuld say... this is between the Spitzer's.

I felt that way about McGreevey. That was something that should have been PERSONAL.

This is about an elected person breaking the law.

David Vitter was applauded and we as dems were disgusted... Are we going to be as hypocrytical as THAT party?

We need to win an election and I for one REFUSE to give the ilk of the republicans the red meat they WILL use if he does not resign. This isn't a little tiny state, this is NYS, the state that Hillary Clinton represents. it could very well be devastating to the dems.

Keith asked Wayne Barrett how come wiretaps weren't brought out on David Vitter or Larry Craig? Although a wiretap would have only brought out if Larry Craig was seeing male hookers. The one who's made the claim said it was many years ago.

Worst persons;

3. Brent Bozell for the usual babble on how Clinton destroyed the military when there are Generals and admirals who believe that things have gotten worse since 2003.

2. Joseph Abrams at Foxnews.com for the list of 19 alleged terrorist plots foiled , 13 with no convictions and 7 with no charges. And what about the other 14,000 plots Fox said we failed.

1. Rep. Steven King (Turd-Iowa) for his remark that terrorists will cheer if Obama wins the presidency.
