$500,000,000,000.00
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/11/2008 10:46:47

Good Morning.

Over the past week, we've finally crossed a devastating financial milestone.

We find today's cost of war passing through $501,570,000,000.00

Such a number is difficult to grasp. That's 500 billion that's been squandered on Bush's folly.

With the current US population at a hair over 300 million, let's do some math.

That's $1,670 for every man, woman and child currently alive in the US, from 100 years to 100 seconds old. Just think of it. The baby emerging from its mother at the very moment you read this is already saddled with almost $1700 of debt. Your elderly grandmother on a fixed income, too.

33 cities in the United States could have a public works project on the scale of Boston's Big Dig.

We could send 2 million students to Harvard University on a full, four-year scholarship.

Or, you could buy about 5 billion barrels of oil, at the current market rates...

At the website referenced above, you can drill down into your community. So let's see what Bush's folly has cost Waltham, MA:

Taxpayers in Waltham, Massachusetts have paid $147.3 million for the Iraq War thus far. For the same amount of money, the following could have been provided:
44,145 People with Health Care OR
229,644 Homes with Renewable Electricity OR
2,889 Public Safety Officers OR
2,522 Music and Arts Teachers OR
15,351 Scholarships for University Students OR
6 New Elementary Schools OR
512 Affordable Housing Units OR
55,231 Children with Health Care OR
17,618 Head Start Places for Children OR
2,108 Elementary School Teachers OR
2,480 Port Container Inspectors

Of course, war has a human cost, too. As always, we'll check the latest casualty figures from the warron terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 3983
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 3844
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3522
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3124
Since Election (1/31/05): 2546

Other Coalition Troops: 308
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 485

Although it's far less of an impact nationally than the financial toll, that works out to 1 out of every 75,000 Americans that has been killed in this war. Although the estimated number of wounded varies widely (estimated, because the Pentagon has never provided an official figure) that ratio could be as low as 1 out of every 3,000 Americans as a casualty of this war.

War also has a political cost. Never mind our reputation in the world, or our use of torture, or our utter callousness in treating Iraq and the Iraqis as our private military park...just focusing on one item, President Bush's approval rating has sunk to a range of 29-39% (curious, since other outlets are reporting less than 20%). In any case, I'd have to say that the Republicans and their policies have been thoroughly discredited, don't you think?

And if that's not enough, think about something one of our own members said a few days ago. "Voting for McCain is like voting for a third term of Bush."

America can't survive four more years of this.

Boeing invented the frickin' aerial tanker. Nice to see they won't be able to keep building them. They've held that contract since WWII.

KC-10 (originally a Douglas product, now owned by Boeing) Currently flying.

KC-135 (Militarized Boeing 707) in service since the 1960s. Currently flying.

KC-97 (Tanker version of the venerable B-29 of WWII fame)

And I think a few more.

*poof*

This is horrendous. Knowing Iran's Stance on Homosexuality, I have to wonder what the hell Britian is thinking

An Iranian lesbian who fled to Britain after her girlfriend was arrested and sentenced to death faces being forcibly returned after losing the latest round in her battle to be granted asylum.

[...]

In turning down Ms Emambakhsh and Mr Kazemi's asylum applications, the Home Office has said that, provided Iranians are discreet about their homosexuality, they will not be persecuted. But Omar Kuddus, of Gay Asylum UK, demanded that Britain follow the example of the Netherlands and Germany in imposing a moratorium on all deportations involving gay and lesbian Iranians. He asked: "How many more young Iranians have to die before the British Government takes action?"

Jesus, they are sending her to her death.

As much as I am disheartened by the state of affairs in this country, we are still blessed in some ways. I lead an openly gay life style without fear of death by my Government. Everyone should be entitled to the same freedoms.

: now playing : Ripple / Grateful Dead

With and for all my blog friends - - -

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine

And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,

Would you hear my voice come thru the music,

Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,

Perhaps they're better left unsung.

I don't know, don't really care

Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,

When there is no pebble tossed,

Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,

If your cup is full may it be again,

Let it be known there is a fountain,

That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,

Between the dawn and the dark of night,

And if you go no one may follow,

That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,

When there is no pebble tossed,

Nor wind to blow.

You who choose to lead must follow

But if you fall you fall alone,

If you should stand then who's to guide you?

If I knew the way I would take you home.

I just wanted to throw this out there.......something that has really struck home with me of late. Now that I'm a "workin' stiff" taking a temp job as a cashier at a grocery store, I am ALARMED at what people are using their credit cards for!

I try to never use my cc for food, though lately I've had to several times. People are not only using them for large grocery purchases but tiny ones as well. I swear, I have rung up many people paying for a cup of coffee - $1.06 - with a CC!!! That is insane, and really shows that people are either quite rich or really hard up. I'm going with the latter.

Sad. :(

Yes, Credit Cards, which require a signature, not debit which uses a PIN. I am shocked - that one dollar coffee might cost $10, $20 or more unless you pay it right away!!

Comment by livingonli on 03/11/2008 15:21:44
It used to be most places had a minimum amount before you could use a credit card, but that seems to be disappearing. Although a few pizza places do require a minimum 10 dollar purchase before you can use a credit card.

I can use my debit card like a credit card and often do because after using it as a debit card a certain number of times, the bank charges me a dollar for every transaction. When I use it as a credit card I don't have to pay that fee; it requires a signature, but it still comes directly out of my checking account.

Stocks are up, but at what cost?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks surged Tuesday morning after the Federal Reserve said it would loan up to $200 billion to banks and lenders in an effort to loosen up tight credit markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) soared more than 250 points in the early going. The blue-chip index had ended the previous session at a 17-month low.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) index climbed 2.2%. after ending the previous session at a 19-month low. The Nasdaq composite (COMP) jumped 2.3% after ending the previous session at its lowest level in 18 months.

Gains were broad based, with all 30 Dow stocks rising. Financial components JP Morgan (JPM, Fortune 500), Citigroup (C, Fortune 500), Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), American Express (AXP, Fortune 500) and AIG (AIG, Fortune 500) led the advance.

Stocks tumbled Monday for a third straight session on worries that the financial sector will see more writedowns related to the housing and credit crises. Those concerns remained Tuesday, but were countered by the Fed's plan to keep liquidity flowing in financial markets.

The Fed will make up to $200 billion available to cash-strapped banks and lenders. The loans will be available for a term of 28 days, rather than overnight. The program is being coordinated with central banks worldwide.

Investors, cheered by the injection of liquidity into the system, shook off a jump in energy prices. Oil prices surged to a new record trading high of $109.70 a barrel while gas prices hit $3.227 a gallon at the pump, matching the all-time record from last May.

Spitzer should step down for the good of the party and the good of the state. I enthusiastically voted for him but have been disappointed with him as Governor, but I also think they have been gunning for him. The whole brouhah with Bruno a while back was part of it because he said that Spitzer was going after him may be part of it.

And I have to wonder how many of those stockbrokers who cheered are also clients of the Emperor Club Escort service?

And on TriSec's post (well done, BTW) - the scariest part is that this is all on the US credit card. Shifting that money elsewhere probably wouldn't happen because IT'S NOT OUR MONEY! - So it's way more than $500 billion + additional costs. It's all that, plus interest. And the people/nations that hold that debt do not have our best interests at heart. We won the Cold War via a battle of financial attrition. Might China and others use that same tactic in the future?

Hate to be more of a buzz-kill today than I already have been, but when the Fed floods the market not only with cash, but "cheap" cash (i.e., lowering the interest rates AGAIN) - the value of the dollar continues downward. Thus, inflation (not core) and higher oil prices (as the cost of a barrel of oil on the international markets is still linked to the US dollar).

Helps Wall Street though! Hurray!

When this public person has actively persecuted prostitution rings, and based his campaign on cleaning things up, it reeks of hypocrisy when he's caught wallowing in the mud. It's the same type of moral hypocrisy we condemn in the Republicans.

One other minor difference is that generally prostitution is illegal and porn is generally legal. As former officer of the law and current governor, he broke the law.

Query - which definition of "popular vote"? No matter the seating of the MI and FL delegates, there is another layer on the Superdelegate front: what if the popular vote minus MI and FL favors Obama and the popular vote with MI and FL favors Clinton. What then? Which count should the Superdelegates look too? -- no doubt we can assume the arguments of the candidates - but, which lends legitimacy - if any?

You know I am not sure... I sorta thought that it was interesting that he was saying that he learned so much in the past 8 months.... And Randi was trying to tell him that he is pretty much a racist. I doubt that he could understand that part.

Ron Paul was good for ONE thing: he was against the war.

If I had to take a position - neither the delegates nor the popular vote counts of either MI or FL should count in the calculations. But the arguments will be made.

That's pretty big.

Quite big.

FL and MI are wild cards. I think I see where you are going.

Right now, w/o MIand Fl, Obama is still more than a half million votes ahead of Clinton. HE is leading when you count ALL the votes.

MI and FL are the noose around the neck of everyone.

AND... even then, quite honestly, If we were to count those states (Florida might be easier sine he WAS on the ballot) I suspect you will see that the popular vote will still tilt towards Obama. Hillary got 60% percent in MI, compared to 40% uncommitted. I have a feeling that in MI, many people weren't aware that they could not do write -ins. They saw hillary, with Barack and they voted. I do not blame them, mind you... but what a dif it would have been if EVERYONE knew that you could NOT write in a candidate. A lot of people go in and vote what they see. (I hope that makes sense)

I should go look into this in more depth. I would like to know what the vote count was in FLorida.

Comment by livingonli on 03/11/2008 22:14:20
Obama was on the ballot in Florida just not Michigan where he and Edwards along with most of the candidates stood by their agreement to withdraw their names from the ballot when the Party announced they wouldn't recognize that primary.

But many apparently also stayed home that day (more so in Florida) because they felt it was pointless if the vote was going to count.

Comment by Shane-O on 03/11/2008 22:16:14
Maybe I can say it better (it is happy hour, ya know!)

Consider this hypothetical (and it's not that far out).

Obama wins more states. Obama wins more pledged delegates. Obama wins the popular vote, not including MI and FL.

Clinton wins the popular vote when including MI and FL.

Superdelegates have free reign. The DNC rule regarding pledged delegates don't apply - what if the Superdelegates say, well - in an effort to "enfranchise" FL and MI, we'll go with the popular vote including them?

It's not outside the "rules." And it makes for one big clusterf*%k

Comment by Raine on 03/11/2008 22:16:45
The way I am seeing it, BArack Obama would still lead in the popular vote if you counted FLorida, in regards to Michigan... there is no way to tell. if you gave him 40% (all the uncommitted votes) he would still be ahead.

As of this weekend he was ahead by half a million votes...

a Little O/T: As I type this, I am gettting more and more incensed about the fact that we have OPEN primaries. we should NOT have them .... PERIOD. I don't want repubs interfering with our party primaries, and YES, I do not want Dems to do that to them.

Unfortunately, at this point - if you add MI and FL to the popular vote totals, Obama is only up bu about 3,500 votes out of 25,000,000 cast. After PA - very well could switch - thus my concern.

Of course, this all gets settled with a re-vote (an honest one). Call me crazy - I don't have a lot of faith in Howie...

Comment by livingonli on 03/11/2008 22:21:08
In the case of MI, that 40% would have to factor Obama, Edwards, Dodd, and whoever was on the ballot other than Hillary, Kucinich, Gravel, and whoever else that were on the Michigan primary. I think only Biden and Richardson had dropped out at that point.

Great point! - I wonder if the convention would allow all the 40% uncommitted votes to go to Obama? I got NO idea!

That is the problem...

I still don't see the entire race coming down to FLorida and Michigan. But I get the muse. WE do have a clusterf*ck, indeed.

I am still feeling like the rules should be the rules. I am NOT happy about those people not having thier vote count, but for the love of god, where were they when this was happening?

IF they want the votes to count, then either a new primary or a caucus NEEDS to happen. Otherwise, the people of these 2 states need to get up and start being more active about thier votes!

GAH!

I can find fault EVERYWHERE. The DNC made it clear that states cannot keep moving the primaries up the way they were, and they said that these consequences would happen. SOMETHING had to be done, becuase at the time, if NOTHING happened, we would have been having friggin primaries LAST YEAR.

That would also mean that they would have to go back and ask who uncommitted meant... and that is a BIG problem I have with the state of Michigan.

They took away the right for write in votes.

Comment by Shane-O on 03/11/2008 22:39:37
All this does get down to the base problem: no matter how this works itself out, just about half the Dem party is going to be pissed.

I only hope there is a way that the half that is pissed won't be so much so that they stay home.

Truly worries me.

And with that, I turn to the "solution" again! :Drink:

Sorry to be so serious - I can be quite silly too - I hope you all know?

This election campaign is long enough as it is. It's bad enough that Iowa was on January 2nd. This is part of why the election is so expensive is because it takes so long. And how would we have felt if primaries and caucuses were being held in 2007?

I like how most Parliamentary Democracies only have a 30-45 day election campaign.

Amen on the Parliamentary idea, liv!

Also gets rid of the need for impeachments - so putzes with 19% approval ratings would not last long in office...
