Remind them of this: If they want more stuff from government, tell them to go vote for the other guy—more free stuff. But don't forget, nothing is really free.
“By the way, I had the privelege of speaking today at the NAACP convention in Houston and I gave them the same speech I am giving you. I don’t give different speeches to different audiences alright. I gave them the same speech. When I mentioned I am going to get rid of Obamacare they weren’t happy, I didn’t get the same response. That’s ok, I want people to know what I stand for and if I don’t stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that’s just fine. But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy-more free stuff. But don’t forget nothing is really free. it has to paid for by people in the private sector creating goods and services, and if people want jobs more than they want free stuff from government, then they are going to have to get government to be smaller. And if they don’t want to repeal Obamacare they are going to have to give me some other stuff they are thinking about cutting, but my list takes Obamacare off first and I have a lot of other things I am thinking of cutting.”
"I think we expected that," the Republican nominee tells Fox Business Network's Neil Cavuto in an interview to air Wednesday night. (snip)
"I am going to give the same message to the NAACP that I give across the country which is that Obamacare is killing jobs, and if jobs is the priority, we are going to have to replace it with something that actually holds down healthcare costs, as opposed to something that causes more spending for the government and more spending for American families," he said. (snip)
"I spoke with a number African American leaders after the event and they said a lot of folks don't want to say they are not going to vote for Barack Obama but they are disappointed in his lack of policies to improve our schools, disappointed in urban policy, disappointed in the economy," he said. "While we disagree on some issues like Obamacare, a lot of issues we see eye to eye."
Many of Romney’s claims were debunked by Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy and the Director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, Hilary Shelton who said that the only African Americans Romney met with after his speech were those that he brought with him. Mr. Shelton explained that Mitt Romney flew in his own African-American supporters who were not affiliated with the NAACP, in order to have some people in the crowd cheering for him.
Romney did not meet with any of the convention rank and file after his speech, and only met with the African-Americans that he planted in the crowd.
“This morning Governor Romney laid out his policy agenda for this nation. Unfortunately, much of his agenda is at odds with what the NAACP stands for – whether the issue is equal access to affordable health care, reforming our education system or the path forward on marriage equality. We appreciate that he was courageous and took the opportunity to speak with us directly.”

For at least the past two months, the LIBOR manipulation banking scandal has been rocking Europe. Now it's threatening to hit banks based here, both through their European counterparts and through their own involvement in the manipulation.
Yet the media here has been SILENT. I haven't seen a single mention of this scandal on the regular nightly news at all. As for the so-called cable news shows, I have to admit I've become really sick of watching them at all (even the ones that express my own point of view and cover stories that I want to see) so I don't really know if it's been covered there or how deep that coverage has been.
And online? It took me over 20 minutes of digging to find the link I posted above from MSNBC. On CNN's website it took five minutes to find the story, but that's with my edition set on international news. I suspect it'd take longer if I used the US Edition.
And of course, the Republican drum beats on and on for deregulation. I've got some news for them - YOU CAN'T DIVIDE BY ZERO FELLAS. When there are no damn regulations, you can't fucking de-regulate.

Somehow I find this hard to believe. When you speak to the NAACP, it's expected that the crowd gathered to hear you speak is going to be mostly people of color.
Romney has said he left Bain in 1999 to lead the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, ending his role in the company. But public Securities and Exchange Commission documents filed later by Bain Capital state he remained the firm’s “sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer, and president.â€
Also, a Massachusetts financial disclosure form Romney filed in 2003 states that he still owned 100 percent of Bain Capital in 2002. And Romney’s state financial disclosure forms indicate he earned at least $100,000 as a Bain “executive†in 2001 and 2002, separate from investment earnings.
snip
Romney did not finalize a severance agreement with Bain until 2002, a 10-year deal with undisclosed terms that was retroactive to 1999. It expired in 2009.
Bain Capital and the campaign for the presumptive GOP nominee have suggested the SEC filings that show Romney as the man in charge during those additional three years have little meaning, and are the result of legal technicalities. The campaign declined to comment on the record. It pointed to a footnote in Romney’s most recent financial disclosure form, filed June 1 as a presidential candidate.

When he was named chief executive of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee on Feb. 11, 1999, Romney declared that he would not accept the job’s $285,000 annual salary until the Games were over and he had proven his turnaround worth.
Romney continued to draw a six-figure salary from Bain Capital, according to State Ethics Commission forms.
In Romney’s 2002 race for governor, he testified before the state Ballot Law Commission that his separation from Bain in 1999 had been a “leave of absence†and not a final departure.

There actually was no Daily Show yesterday. They are on vacation for 2 weeks but Viacom is even blocking access to the old clips and old shows because of the dispute. Too bad you can't go to Comedy Network in Canada but they are IP blocked and you can't go to the website outside of Canada (it will send you to Comedy Central in the US).

The only thing I can say about the DirecTV-Viacom dispute is that the only channel I could miss is Comedy Central since I don't care for the MTV networks anymore and Nick at Nite and TV Land have largely moved away from classic TV and since I have the Star Wars blu-ray I don't need to watch them on Spike.

Probably nothing until the Voom suit even goes to trial and that won't be until late September. They got busted for destroying evidence and Dish will probably lose the suit so there's been speculation that AMC most likely will be gone permanently from Dish.

Raine, thanks for a great blog.
To me, Romney seemed to just be at the NAACP convention to score points elsewhere. On another matter, I think that he will have to explain about his work history. The problem with not being transparent is that it allows people to speculate and presume the worst. So, if Romney did violate federal law, would this mean that Rick Santorum would be the most logical candidate for the Republican nomination.
