Why?

I can't answer that question, I doubt anyone can. Obviously this kid needed mental health and, judging from the pictures of the home he lived in, it appears that money was not a problem. Usually the one factor that ties these horrendous events together is the fact that mental health problems have not been addressed and the killer has been able to find access to a gun(s).

In my opinion the discussion we should be having right along with stronger gun laws is this: UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. And when we discuss care for everyone in this country, we should talk about leaving the drug companies out of the discussion. Too many people are over-medicated. In fact, I won't be surprised one bit if we find out this shooter was on various medications. Let's face it, we live in a "throw some drugs at the problem" society.

Since I'm not an expert in the field of..... anything. Lets ask some experts about what's wrong with our country and see if we can put a finger on what would have triggered this guy. These people get paid big bucks to give us advice:

We don't have the luxury of time..... if the president wins I don't know how we survive.I don't know how my industry is going to survive… I won't make a deal with the devil... Your religion is going to come under attack... (snip) I will tell you that we purchased more farmland, as a family. And I recommend that if you have the chance you buy farmland. Get the hell out of the east... Get your kids out of the schools that are indoctrinating them with socialism... May I highly suggest you get grandfathered into the Second Amendment today and don't forget the ammunition.

That valuable info comes to us from this overly pasty white guy:

According to this guy by the name of Bryan Fischer who has a radio show, the problem was that we don't have the 10 Commandments hanging in the school. Saying "God is not going to go where he is not wanted", and putting the blame squarely on school administrators.

Fox "News" anchor/actor/talking head Steve Deace also blamed the school. The schools promote a "culture of death" because there is no God among other reasons (writing assignments, movies, etc). Oddly he doesn't blame his own network for showing gory details on a regular basis.

This guy takes the cake. This vile, horrible man who spews this evil bull-shit. He also blames the school, but not just the school but God! Yes, God did not stop the shooter because, basically God is pissed off that we're not bringing God into the schools.

We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?

He has said this before, earlier this year regarding the CO movie theater shooting:

We don't have a crime problem, a gun problem or even a violence problem. What we have is a sin problem. And since we've ordered God out of our schools, and communities, the military and public conversations, you know we really shouldn't act so surprised ... when all hell breaks loose.

I swear, this guy makes my butt hurt seriously bad! From what I learned of my small amount of religious education God is EVERYWHERE. Why would God not be in the school, military, etc if He is supposed to be in our hearts. Do we really need the 10 commandments and shit posted on our walls everywhere? (That sounds suspiciously like "indoctrination"). If we believe in God we are supposed to act accordingly!

Mike Huckabee: Dick of the year. Congratulations asshat.

Sadly, we have pundits and politicians in this country who will try to benefit off of any tragedy. We have easy access to guns in America (it is easier to get a gun than a home refinancing loan) and poor health care access for millions of people. Perhaps we should ask why we are afraid to address these issues.

Also, as a member of a minority faith, I know full well how things were for those who were not Christians in the public schools back in the period that some seek to restore. Judaism and other religions were barely tolerated and the public prayers were somehow always Christian if not Protestant. I have an older friend in his 90s who remembers when, despite being a successful businessman, he could not go to some country clubs because of his religion. At the same time, others were excluded because of race or gender.

We do not need a return to an idealized past that never existed, and that had discrimination against many in our country. Let us keep our faith in our hearts, letting them dictate how we act as wiser and more compassionate Americans and citizens of the world.

And now I'm hearing Westboro Baptist is going to "protest" at the funerals.

If there's ever a group that needs to be massacred....

I posted on Newsvine yesterday...."Wasn't there a shooting in an Amish school a while back? God is front and center there...didn't seem to make much difference."

Well said, Vel.

Why can't we walk and chew gum at the same time anymore? ANY and all discussion of gun control needs to include a discussion of healthcare UNIVERSALLY -- in this nation.

More security won't help this, not this.

It seems like these macho ass-hats are indeed using their guns or hiding behind the 2nd in order to compensate for something else they are lacking.

Wrong God? Maybe?

And apparently they had to evacuate the church in Newton because of a bomb threat. We do need to look at the mental health in this country because there are too many fucking lunatics.

I am back after seeing the Hobbit with friends. Note to self: Do not get the medium size diet cola as it is only medium sized for any being over 7 and a half feet tall.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, although there were significant new scenes, some changes and a few things that surprised me. I rapidly adapted to the new 48 frames per second and it for me made many of the images stand out. Rivendell, for example, looked a lot like I imagine the place would be if it were real.

Having read the article that VJ linked to, I have to agree that we need better mental health care. We also need to talk about the easy access of guns. (One of my conservative friends responded to a post of mine on Facebook -- feel free to chime in.)

I think that I will spend some time tonight reflecting on Friday's tragedy before I write much more. This is a time when I am indeed afraid for our country and its children.

I feel so helpless.

Just watched the President, and I feel like I do after we watched New Orleans die. Filled with impotent rage, stymied by the fact that there is nothing I can personally do about it, and deeply angered by the powers-that-be that have done nothing about it.

I don't blame the President; this isn't his fault. But the freakin' NRA...may they reap what they sow, a thousandfold.

Damn it. Damn it all to hell.

My friend, we must not despair. I saw the warmth and compassion in the room before the President spoke, with people of many faiths and none at all gathered in community. We must see to the protection of the innocent. Justice will come.
