Author: Raine    Date: 12/31/2012 14:48:40

In my last blog of 2012, I direct you to Velveeta's year-end blog. I'm no good at year end lists...

We had a few bonus blogs on Saturday -- one from yours truly and one from our friend, Jacob Dean.

Today December 31,is the final day of the year before the the Bush Tax cuts officially expire. We've written of this ad nauseum. There appears to be some movement in the negotiations, and as I sort it out, I will update.

Until then, I wish you a happy last day of 2012. You have meant the world to me in the past, and I fully expect the same in 2013. Sometimes things not changing is a good thing.

Peace and Love to you and your family,

Raine

In defense of the futon, I will say this: the futon the average American is familiar with is nothing like an actual Japanese futon. The real thing (or a close approximation like I had prior to Mrs Mondo) is about 3-5 inches of heavy cotton batting quilted together. It is firm, yet very comfortable. This is far different that the spine jarring, notional futon signifiers that we are more familiar with.

As I reflect on this year, I have accomplished much but not everything that I wanted. I have a Massachusetts teaching license and visited the Bay State, but no job has yet materialized there or here. I will hope that 2013 brings something full time.

Thank all of you for your support and friendship this past. We are a community that supports each other through trying times. This year has been a challenge for us all.

So, I wish you not just a last good day of the year but a good year in 2013. Peace.

Afternoon, Comrades!

TriSec is not working today. We'll be going out to play in the snow after lunch.

Futon? Try a hammock!

We've got two more days worth of eating....tonight is our annual fried food fest...got wings, pizza rolls, cheese sticks, and some Cuban stuff to fry. (and maybe fried dough, too!)

Lasagna is on tap for tomorrow....with Mama TriSec's homemade sauce!

I've been calling our friends at the NRA the "National Recidivist Association" for almost 20 years now.

And finally, like I said on FB....2012, GET YOUR SORRY ASS OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!

I guess WSBK still does it on New Year's Eve, Antenna TV is running it all day New Year's Day (which I get as a WPIX sub-channel), The only digital sub-channels that seem to be worth watching are the ones that have become to old TV shows like Me-TV, Antenna TV, etc,

WSBK does a good job with this. It's almost all-Curly. There may be a Shemp in the early going, but none of the other, lesser, stooges appear.

(The two that get played every year are the big pie fight, and the "Woman Hater's Club". That's the first one, entirely in verse. Quite different from the rest, it is interesting to see.) I had to watch "You Natzy Spy" on YouTube - I wish they'd play that one.

Excellent! Do they play "Hold That Tiger?" Which is notable for two things; it is the only Stooges short that has all four of the original Stooges and it is Curly's last on screen appearance (granted it is a post-stroke cameo with no lines).

I have seen "You Natzy Spy" and "I'll Never Heil Again" (the sequel) on various Stooges marathons over the years, And a tidbit that "You Natzy Spy" came out before Chaplin's "The Great Dictator", At least it beats watching the shorts on AMC and IFC where they insist on putting at least two commercial breaks in each short,

I am reasonably optimistic about my chances for the job that I am interviewing on Wednesday, but I think that I will still keep my resume in circulation, particularly out in Massachusetts. On March 31, 2013, the city may release a recommendation list of schools to close. So, it will help to have options.

Looks like they are going with a number of $400,000-450,000

I said this in July:
From the NYT article:
The president’s proposal could also put him at odds with Democratic leaders like Representative Nancy Pelosi of California and Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, who have advocated extending the cuts for everyone who earns up to $1 million. And it will most likely do little to break the deadlock in Washington over how to deal with fiscal deficits, an impasse that has only hardened as Republicans sense a chance to make gains in Congress this fall.

But by calling for an extension for just a year, Mr. Obama hopes to make Republicans look obstructionist and unreasonable. Trying to bounce back from another weak jobs report on Friday, he also hopes to deepen the contrast with his challenger, Mitt Romney. On Friday, the president said Mr. Romney would “give $5 trillion of new tax cuts on top of the Bush tax cuts, most of them going to the wealthiest Americans.”

Dems are willing to secede the amount to one million and the President is asking for the amount to be those earning over $250,000 a year, just as he has been asking all along. I suspect, this time around we will find the number somewhere in between.
Administration officials said they did not believe that the difference between the White House and these Democratic leaders was a big obstacle. They said that whether to use $250,000 or $1 million as a cutoff was more a matter of strategy than a “religious debate,” in the words of one official, who added that many other Democrats favored $250,000.

I'll have to check at 3 if Thom is on while I am out. Nicole may be filling in for Randi or it will be a best-of show. I think the rule is that radio thinks that fewer people are listening over the holidays which is why talk shows pretty much go into best-of mode until after New Year's. I remember when Air America did all best-of shows on Christmas week.

Some snippets: (bear in mind there is no deal yet, so this is the part where Obama basically put the GOP against the wall)

And so part of the reason that I wanted to speak to all of you here today is to make sure it that we emphasize to Congress, and that members of both parties understand that all across America this is a pressing concern on people’s minds.

Now, the potential agreement that’s being talked about would not only make sure the taxes don’t go up on middle-class families, it also would extend tax credits for families with children. It would extend our tuition tax credit that’s helped millions of families pay for college. It would extend tax credits for clean energy companies that are creating jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. It would extend unemployment insurance to 2 million Americans who are out there still actively looking for a job.

I have to say that ever since I took office, throughout the campaign, and over the last couple of months, my preference would have been to solve all these problems in the context of a larger agreement, a bigger deal, a grand bargain, whatever you want to call it, that solves our deficit problems in a balanced and responsible way, that doesn’t just deal with the taxes, but deals with the spending in a balanced way so that we can put all this behind us and just focus on growing our economy.

But with this Congress, that was obviously a little too much to hope for at this time.

So there is still more work to be done in the tax code to make it fair, even as we’re also looking at how we can strengthen something like Medicare.

Now, if Republicans think that I will finish the job of deficit reduction through spending cuts alone -- and you hear that sometimes coming from them, that sort of after today we’re just going to try to shove only spending cuts down, you know, well -- shove spending -- shove spending cuts at us...

(LAUGHTER)

... that will hurt seniors, or hurt students, or hurt middle- class families without asking also equivalent sacrifice from millionaires or companies with a lot of lobbyists, et cetera. If they think that’s going to be the formula for how we solve this thing, then they’ve another thing coming. That’s not how it’s going to work. We’ve got to do this in a balanced and responsible way. And if we’re serious about deficit reduction and debt reduction, then it’s going to have to be a matter of shared sacrifice. At least as long as I’m president. And I’m going to be president for the next four years, I hope. So...

(APPLAUSE)

So anyway, for now -- for now, our most immediate priority is to stop taxes going up for middle-class families, starting tomorrow. I think that is a modest goal that we can accomplish. Democrats and Republicans in Congress have to get this done. But they’re not there yet. They are close, but they’re not there yet.

And one thing we can count on with respect to this Congress is that if there is even one second left before you have to do what you’re supposed to do, they will use that last second.

So as of this point, it looks like I’m going to be spending New Year’s here in D.C. You all are going to be hanging out in D.C. too.

(LAUGHTER)

I can come to your house? Is that what you said? I don’t want to spoil the party.

I feel bad for Reid -- dude had to do with second stringers all season.

So far 7 coaches gone and a good # of GM's.

I've been searching (just put in a res for a job in Washington) but to do anything as far as interviews and such go (not to mention paying bills, food, normal gas expenditures) I and many millions of others need to have EUC benefits extended.
This has been a chief concern of mine as well, Clint.

We need to extend these benefits -- too many people need them at this point.

Nah, I'm good now. We were out this afternoon snowshoeing for a couple of hours. Now drinking heated beverages.

I am going to predict that the GOP will not cut a deal. I have a rule: if you don't believe in governing a nation, don't run for office.

If this goes as I suspect, we will not have a deal until after the start of the year. In which case, waiting for a new Congress and going with a more Democratic deal might work.

Apparently, the only one on the airwaves with a live show is Randi Rhodes with Nicole Sandler sitting in for her.

Bob Kincaid will be live on the Head On Radio Network (the H.O.R.N.) at 6 pm Eastern.

Musically inclined peeps. The video I posted to Stelios, is he playing in a mode or is just in the typical major/minor key? Just wondering. I urge you to check it.

Procedural question: if this isn't solved by the 113th Congress swearing-in on Thursday, will they keep the lame ducks in town until it is, or will it then be passed on to the newbies?

I'm not so sure about that Mondo.

Have they officially closed the 112th congress or have we heard news that they won't vote?

It'll get passed along. By the Constitution the new reps have to take over on Thursday.

That is, as El Scoopster pointed out, a Constitutional mandate.

Erm, think it's the hotel fire in Puerto Rico, although that might have been New Year's day...

Oh no, 12/30 was the Iroquois.

Just spent a good hour or more combing over the FOIA docdump from the FBI about the Occupy protests. Funny stuff! For the most part it looks like the FBI was doing their job by keeping an eye on things and making sure there wasn't serious violence. There is some question as to whether or not they informed Occupy organizers about potential incidents of violence being planned by spur organizations or counter-protestors.

That said, I think Naomi Wolf went a bit overboard with her rhetoric claiming the FBI was in charge of a nationwide protest crackdown.

Don't know, but when I tried to call my local rep's office I got a message saying his office was closed until Wednesday the 2nd. I did send him a rather pointed e-mail and called the office of the closest rep instead.

Ended up drifting to "The Odd Couple" marathon on WLNY which is right next to "The Honeymooners" marathon on WPIX.
