Carlos Arredondo is being heralded as a true American hero as the story of how he risked his life to help the victims of the two explosions that rocked the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon spreads around the world.
(snip)
When the bombs went off, Arredondo was near the Boylston Street finish line of the marathon, which he was watching in order to support a runner who dedicated his race to Arredondo's son, a U.S. Marine who was killed in the Iraq War, according to the Portland Press-Herald of Maine.
Arredondo immediately sprinted into action after the bombs detonated, and he can be seen in videos of the aftermath rushing to one of the two bombing sites, then pulling debris and fencing away from the bloody victims, clearing the way for emergency personnel to tend to their wounds.
(snip)
Arredondo has been in the public eye before, as he has been a peace activist since 2004, when his son Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo died in Iraq, according to the Daily Mail, which reports that his other son, Brian, committed suicide at the age of 24 on Dec. 19, 2011, after succumbing to depression and drug addiction following the death of his brother.
Arredondo, who legally changed his name to Alexander Brian Arredondo in tribute to his sons, immigrated from Costa Rica to the United States and became an American citizen in 2006, according to a blog post by Massachusetts Institute of Technology research assistant Chris Peterson. He also volunteers for the Red Cross, according to the Daily Mail.
One of the responders in the photograph—the man in the cowboy hat—has been identified as Carlos Arredondo, a Costa Rican immigrant whose Marine son died in action in Iraq in 2004. The day he learned of his son's death, Arrendo locked himself in a van with five gallons of gasoline and a propane torch and set the van on fire. He survived, became a peace activist, and was among the spectators who rushed toward the fumes after the explosion today. After tying a tourniquet onto the young man's legs and wheeling him past the finish line to emergency help, Arredondo, seen badly shaken and trembling in this video, gripping a small American flag drenched in blood, talks to some bystanders on the street about the explosion:

Think there were 4 from Manassas, all have been accounted for per the Patch.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the Centennial Park bombing that occurred during the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. This was before 9/11 Changed Everything, so there wasn't an immediate attempt to blame it on brown people from foreign lands.
It turned out to be a local white extremist (Eric Rudolph).
The Olympics went on too, as did the free concerts in the park.
Discovering a pipe bomb on the park grounds, Jewell alerted police and helped to evacuate the area before the bomb exploded, saving many people from injury or death. Initially hailed by the media as a hero, Jewell was later considered a suspect. Jewell's case is considered an example of the damage that can be done by reporting based on unreliable or incomplete information.

Ya know, I was at CPR class last night, and my instructor was unfortunately streaming the local Fox affiliate. But yesterday it didn't matter, they had reporters and friends at the scene yesterday, too. Funny how that works. I can't vouch for what they're reporting this morning, however.

I consider the Fox affiliate here to be barely good enough for the NFL, nothing else. I wouldn't expect them to be as RW toolish as Faux News though.
For me it's always been WBZ for local news, when they were NBC and now that they're CBS

Ya know, they put Boston on a "ground hold" for a while last night. I saw with my own eyes that it didn't happen - I was in Peabody last night, which is close to one of the approaches. Many jets were still inbound and landing right when this was supposedly going on.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning, everybody. I've just been briefed by my national security team, including FBI Director Mueller, Attorney General Holder, Secretary Napolitano, and my Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco, on the attacks in Boston. We continue to mobilize and deploy all appropriate law enforcement resources to protect our citizens, and to investigate and to respond to this attack.
Obviously our first thoughts this morning are with the victims, their families, and the city of Boston. We know that two explosions gravely wounded dozens of Americans, and took the lives of others, including a 8-year-old boy.
This was a heinous and cowardly act. And given what we now know about what took place, the FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism. Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians it is an act of terror. What we don’t yet know, however, is who carried out this attack, or why; whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual. That's what we don't yet know. And clearly, we’re at the beginning of our investigation.
It will take time to follow every lead and determine what happened. But we will find out. We will find whoever harmed our citizens and we will bring them to justice.
We also know this -- the American people refuse to be terrorized. Because what the world saw yesterday in the aftermath of the explosions were stories of heroism and kindness, and generosity and love: Exhausted runners who kept running to the nearest hospital to give blood, and those who stayed to tend to the wounded, some tearing off their own clothes to make tourniquets. The first responders who ran into the chaos to save lives. The men and women who are still treating the wounded at some of the best hospitals in the world, and the medical students who hurried to help, saying “When we heard, we all came in.†The priests who opened their churches and ministered to the hurt and the fearful. And the good people of Boston who opened their homes to the victims of this attack and those shaken by it.
So if you want to know who we are, what America is, how we respond to evil -- that’s it. Selflessly. Compassionately. Unafraid.
In the coming days, we will pursue every effort to get to the bottom of what happened. And we will continue to remain vigilant. I’ve directed my administration to take appropriate security measures to protect the American people. And this is a good time for all of us to remember that we all have a part to play in alerting authorities -- if you see something suspicious, speak up.
I have extraordinary confidence in the men and women of the FBI, the Boston Police Department, and the other agencies that responded so heroically and effectively in the aftermath of yesterday’s events. I’m very grateful for the leadership of Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino. And I know that even as we protect our people and aggressively pursue this investigation, the people of Boston will continue to respond in the same proud and heroic way that they have thus far -- and their fellow Americans will be right there with them.
Thank you very much. And you can expect further briefings from our law enforcement officials as the day goes on. When we have more details, they will be disclosed. What I’ve indicated to you is what we know now. We know it was bombs that were set off. We know that obviously they did some severe damage. We do not know who did them. We do not know whether this was an act of an organization or an individual or individuals. We don’t have a sense of motive yet. So everything else at this point is speculation. But as we receive more information, as the FBI has more information, as our out counterterrorism teams have more information, we will make sure to keep you and the American people posted.

This can't be good.
The magnitude is just not the same, but it's still an attack. This isn't like Newtown where I just felt completely helpless. Again I state, this is my city. This is our day. Don't fuck with that.
Meh, I dunno. Fuck anyone for telling me how I'm supposed to feel today. (not directed at anyone here, I assure you.)

Over the past decade, I have felt a strange disconnect about the events of September 11. I got home late that evening, and I watched more of the news on TV. I was trying to understand why and how people could be upset having not been there as I was. I would never -- and will never -- take anything away from how they feel; it was always just really hard for me to understand. I have no question in my mind that the families that lost loved ones probably think the same of me and my story of that day. I would have given anything to be able to have watched it all unfold at home.
(snip)
The sadness will always be there, and whether we like it or not, we will always live in a world that includes the events of September 11. Your children will never understand the way you or I do. But then again - I can't understand the way you do. This belongs to us as a Nation, but also to each individual, separately. The reality is that things did change, for good and bad.
