Famine Wars
Author: AuntAzalea    Date: 04/23/2008 16:12:14

“Do you mind if I eat that piece of cheese you have left over?”
“Of course not, its in our refrigerator, you don’t have to ask.”

This weekly conversation between Velveeta and I highlights my weird idea of a blog.
The famine wars are coming in less then twelve weeks, there will be an explosion of fighting and dying and scrambling to kill over food like we have never seen. How do I know this? Certainly not from ABC, CBS, NBS, or CNN, etc.
I came across a small A.P. article by David Stringer entitled “World Food Program warns of ‘silent tsunami’ of Hunger”,

and then I went on to the CARE website

I grew up poor. I grew up living in five different homes with five women I considered my mother. Food was an issue. In my house if I didn’t have a school provided hot lunch, it meant that I would sometimes have nothing. Food was a thing – Saturdays were for eggs, Friday night plain pizza, and Sunday chicken after church – the rest of the week I was on my own. I had to ask permission before going into the kitchen and taking a banana. I was not to complain I was hungry because there really wasn’t anything to be done.
I was all skin & bones with long pigtails and “cat’s eyes” shaped glasses- lucky thing I went into ballet!

Well now I hoard if I feel like we are tight on money. I buy ice cream, chocolate and lots of comfort foods. I eat double portions and swear I will diet the next day. I get depressed if our splenda dish is running low on packets and I feel like I can breathe again when it overflows in my “Coffee Station”. I have to have an extra pound of coffee (plus a secret stash of emergency Maxwell House)
Before sobriety (and sanity) I was homeless for a time. You don’t forget hunger. Food equals security for me, needless to say I am no longer skin and bones!

Now I try to imagine my worry food connection on a global level and I can see where the desperate violence will happen. People are dying already; Haiti’s government went down two weeks ago. People are trying to hoard rice, buying out the stores.

I had a nightmare last night about the world combusting into food wars. Waking up in a cold sweat I ran to the kitchen and made my beloved coffee sat down and wrote letters to congress and the President. Felt helpless for a while and then decided to write this blog.
I can get the word out, the Halliburton, Blackwater, NWO, etc. all salivating at the prospect of simultaneous wars all over the globe allowing them to pocket the vital resources. This can no longer happen in the cloak of night.

When we see wrong we must speak it, no matter what.

That chocolate bar, cookie, cake ain’t so sweet when I know people in Haiti are eating dirt mixed with water. We are still the richest and most powerful country in the world, we are filled with good people. Lets start insisting the government listen to and support the experts and heroes like UNICEF, CARE, Oxfam, ONE.org, etc, They are screaming for help and we are all busy complaining about the price of gas and latte’s at Starbucks and whether American Idol has jumped the shark.

Make a commitment with me to be conscious. I am fighting that overwhelmed feeling by taking action everyday. I am sure my senator knows me by my first name already and rolls his Republican eyes with every letter, but that is okay. I know what it is to be hungry as both a child and adult on a deep level and I don’t want to sit by and do nothing while I watch women and children die of starvation, rape and disease and young men die fighting over grains of rice and oil.

It is time to get up, get out, and do. Go on
One organization for more information about what you can do before the sun goes down today.

Good blog there, Aunt Azalea. It looks like you and Velveeta make a great team. Too bad you two can't come up to DC for the meet-up. It would have been awesome.

Oh Aunt Azalea... Thank you for this. VJ was right, it is amazing and very true.

It's is amazing how grateful I feel that we have food in our humble Aprtment. I too grew up poor. And yet, compared to the oncoming famine issues we will be seeing, I realize, I was fortunate.

We simply did not have a lot. My father hunted Deer, we raised pork... and we had a huge garden, canned the food and the like.

And I too was homeless for a short period, you do not forget. You simply do not.

I still wish you could have joined us. It would have been a blast and besides Faye hasn't taken up the honor of being blackmail photographer.

Hopefully you two can come to the next meet-up.

NO Randi, she did NOT win by 10 points.

She won by 8.6 points.

Too bad Randi doesn't visit our blog. I guess she's still waiting to get her message board back-up after the whole mess with AAR.

Comment by Raine on 04/23/2008 19:48:05
I do NOT want Randi to visit this blog...

This is our place to bitch about Randi! IT would be like my mom visiting the blog, I love her, but hell I gotta bitch someplace!

These right-wing talk show hosts live in their own bubbles and are really oblivious to the real world. Those are your real elitists, people.
