Good Morning. Today is our 1,889th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from the Warron Terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4079
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 3940
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3618
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3220
Since Election (1/31/05): 2642

Other Coalition Troops: 312
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 501

We find this morning's cost of war passing through $ 521, 170, 625, 000.00

Not quite a veteran's issue, but I couldn't let this one pass. Much has been made in recent days over Sen. Obama's diplomacy proposals...that is, doing the untinkable thing of actually talking to those in the world that would disagree with us. Of course, other countries in the world agree this is a good thing. France, for example, has been talking to Hamas for months.

PARIS, May 19 -- France has had contacts with the leaders of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas "for several months," French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Monday.

"We must be able to talk if we want to play a role," Kouchner said in a radio interview. "These are not relations, they are contacts."

Kouchner's remarks followed the publication Monday of an interview with France's emissary to Hamas -- a former ambassador to Iraq -- in the daily newspaper Le Figaro.

The disclosure of French contacts with Hamas, which the United States and European Union consider a terrorist organization, followed an uproar in the U.S. presidential campaign over the issue of government contacts with sponsors of terrorism.

President Bush, during a Middle East visit last week, told the Israeli parliament, "Some seem to believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along." He compared the willingness to meet with "terrorists and radicals" to the pre-World War II "appeasement" of Nazi Germany.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama chastised Bush for what he said was an obvious slap at his comments that the United States should open lines of communication with countries such as Iran and Syria in an effort to advance peace. The senator from Illinois has not advocated negotiating with the Hamas organization.

Hamas defeated the Fatah movement, long dominant in the Palestinian territories, in January 2006 parliamentary elections. After a power-sharing deal failed, Hamas last June forcibly took control of the Gaza Strip, where it is much stronger and more influential than Fatah, which continues to control the Palestinian Authority from its base in the West Bank.

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter drew criticism from Israel and the Bush administration for meeting with Hamas leaders in Damascus, Syria, last month.

Regarding the French contacts, Israeli officials said they had been assured that France's policy had not changed.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said, "We don't believe it is helpful to the process of bringing peace to the region."

Carter and French emissary Yves Aubin de la Messuzi¿re gave similar accounts of their separate sessions with Hamas, saying its leadership appeared willing to moderate its political positions.

Kouchner, in his interview with Europe 1 radio, said Hamas still does not recognize the state of Israel but is "more flexible than before" on the subject. Historically, Hamas has called for Israel's elimination.

"They assured that they were ready to accept a Palestinian state," de la Messuzi¿re told Le Figaro, adding that the statement "amounts to an indirect recognition of Israel."

"They said they were ready to stop suicide attacks and, what surprised me is that the Islamist leaders recognize the legitimacy of Mahmoud Abbas," said de la Messuzi¿re, referring to the Palestinian Authority president from Fatah.

De la Messuzi¿re said he met with the Hamas prime minister, Ismael Haniyeh, and his Gaza foreign minister, Mahmoud Zahar.

The government announced its contacts with Hamas because "we must do so clearly" and with the full knowledge of France's partners, Kouchner said.

Perhaps you've heard of the story of Matthis Chiroux by now. He served for four years in non-combat areas in the US Army, and was honorably discharged last year. However, he was recently stop-lossed and ordered to report to the war in Iraq. He's not going.
Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, who served in the Army until being honorably discharged last summer after over four years of service in Afghanistan, Japan, Europe and the Phillipines, today publicly announced his intention to refuse orders to deploy to Iraq.

Sgt. Chiroux made made his announcement in the Cannon House Office Building Rotunda after members of Iraq Veterans Against the War testified before the Congressional Progressive Caucus during Winter Soldier on the Hill.

Sgt. Chiroux made the following statement to the press. (Video of his announcement is also available.)

Good afternoon. My name is Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, and I served in the Army as a Photojournalist until being honorably discharged last summer after over four years of service in Afghanistan, Japan, Europe and the Phillipines. As an Army journalist whose job it was to collect and filter servicemember's stories, I heard many stomach-churning testimonies of the horrors and crimes taking place in Iraq. For fear of retaliation from the military, I failed to report these crimes, but never again will I allow fear to silence me. Never again will I fail to stand.

In February, I received a letter from the Army ordering my return to active duty, for the purpose of mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Thanks in great part to the truths of war being fearlessly spoken by my fellow IVAW members, I stand before you today with the strength, clarity and resolve to declare to the military and the world that this Soldier will not be deploying to Iraq.

This occupation is unconstitutional and illegal and I hereby lawfully refuse to participate as I will surely be a party to war crimes. Furthermore, deployment in support of illegal war violates all of my core values as a human being, but in keeping with those values, I choose to remain in the United States to defend myself from charges brought by the Army if they so wish to pursue them. I refuse to participate in the occupation of Iraq.

I'm going to leave it at that today....

I know! The pollsters don't know what to do with all the new voters coming out this year - how do you calculate "likely voters"? how do you effectively reach people who don't have land lines?

And any argument that posits that Obama won't win CA and NY is just freakin' ridiculous.

Ya know, where is the media coming up with this "bitter democrat" syndrome?

I've had vigorous arguments with both family and friends who support the Senator from New York, but thus far we've always parted with a "no matter what happens, I'm still voting for whoever has the "D" after their name in November..."

I have yet to personally encounter a Hillary or Barack supporter that is not planning on showing up if their candidate loses...

having breasts and running for president doesn't give you a free pass to being a feminist.

This is politics, it is hard and it's messy, and HRC did an amazing thing ... she is a truly viable candidate for POTUS.

it isn't right to use the feminist card when you are losing. These are the hard breaks. HEr NOT winning this campaign is not about sexism or misogyny. IT is simple, she ran a bad campaign. Taht has nothing to do with sex.

That being said, when you get to the point of losing, PLEASE don't act like the sterotypes that all our foresisters fought so hard to remove.

Don't forget anyone who protested Ray-Gun's policies in Central America during that decade.

And as for war resisters, a number of people trying to get out of being shipped to Iraq have tried to seek asylum in Canada. But thanks to the current Tory government of Bush's other butt sniffer, Stephen Harper, they have been less receptive to accepting asylum claims compared to during the war in Vietnam.

The anti Goldie Hawn picket line with AADL about "Protocual." Oh and my uncle, the Indian agent, he was very good friends with Russell Means and other leaders of AIM.

Great point. So many people are acting like men can't be feminists as well. I thought we were past that.

Now my next visit is to the nutritionist. I have to eat better which is tough with the schedule and the poor selection of eating places by me.

There are a lot of places nowadays that will make food for you and deliver it weekly. Seattle Sutton is a good one - they even deliver via DHL.

Just do a google search on something like healthy meal delivery and plug in your city and state.

Regarding talking to your enemy; when I was in the 7th Grade, my family and I moved to a new town. When school started, for some unknown reason, an 8th Grader decided to make me a target of name calling and general shenanigans designed to hurt my feelings. I don't know why. . . probably because I was the new kid. He recruited several other boys at my new school to join in the "fun" and made my life miserable for about 6 months.

One day, I saw him in the hallway. I got up every nerve in my body and walked up to him and said "Steven, why are you mean to me? Did I do something that upset you?

He shrugged sheepishly and mumbled "Mmmm, I dunno."

I responded "Well, it kind of hurts my feelings and it would be really cool if you could not do it anymore."

Another sheepish shrug and more mumbling ensued.

He and I never became friends, but he never said another mean word and nor did his "followers." One time he even mustered up a "Hey Terri" when we passed in the hallway.

And, that is a magical story about how talking can sometimes work.

End scene.

The proper etiquette in dealing with these loathsome baboons, is to find a nice gentlemen friend and have said gentlemen remove the glove from his hand and smack the unruly cad in the cheek, while challenging him to stop verbally assaulting ladies. KITTY UPDATE

The Kitties du Star are home and well. All their bloodwork looked normal this morning, so they seem to be in the clear.

They are funny animals; it was almost like they knew last night that they weren't in the clear yet and had to go back to the Vet this morning. They just couldn't get comfortable. But, today they got home and immediately went to their favorite chairs, etc and began an elaborate grooming process to get the vet "off."

Boston Globe:

Senator Edward Kennedy, the long-serving liberal icon from Massachusetts who was hospitalized this weekend after suffering a seizure, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, his doctors revealed today.

"Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe,'' Dr. Lee Schwamm, vice chairman of the neurology department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Larry Ronan, Kennedy's doctor, said this afternoon in a statement.

The statement said the usual course of treatment includes combinations of various forms of radiation and chemotherapy.

The doctors said decisions regarding the best course of treatment for Senator Kennedy will be determined after further testing and analysis.

"He has had no further seizures, remains in good overall condition, and is up and walking around the hospital. ... Senator Kennedy will remain at Massachusetts General Hospital for the next couple of days according to routine protocol. He remains in good spirits and full of energy," the statement said.

Kennedy's wife and children have been with him each day since he was hospitalized but have made no public statements.

Malignant gliomas are a type of brain cancer diagnosed in about 9,000 Americans a year -- and the most common type among adults. It's a startling diagnosis: How well patients fare depends on what specific tumor type is found.

“This is very sad news,” said Dr. Joseph Madsen, a Children’s Hospital Boston neurosurgeon.

“High-grade glio-malignancies” such as Sen. Kennedy has “are unfortunately the most common kind of brain tumor in this age group, and they have a poor prognosis for long-term survival.”

They can also be very debilitating during treatment, Madsen said, and Kennedy’s tumor is in an area where it may well eventually affect his speech.

And if there are any newbies about, this one is awfully close to home.

Senator Kennedy is my Senator; he's in the hospital about 4 miles from where I'm sitting right now. He's the only Kennedy I have been able to vote for....

I've been very secure and even smug over the past 8 years...all the bills, causes, and positions that the rest of you have had to call and write to your senators, the likelihood is that Kennedy either co-authored or co-sponsored the bill or the position.

What is Massachusetts going to be like in a post-Kennedy era, now that I actually have to ask that question?

Prognosis a year, maybe 5? We just re-elected him; his current term is through 2012. I'm not convinced that Kerry can carry the torch, and of course there is no one in the pipeline that could even succeed him. (No one can replace him.)

Christ, the Senator created the legislation that made my career possible, that's how vital he is to me. (Remember Kennedy-Cassenbaum in the mid-90s? That became the HIPAA legislation that is near and dear to me...and is also responsible for the NPI stuff that I've been whining about in recent weeks.)

It worries me to some extent too. But I have to say and someone who was facing surgery at one point for a pituary tumor (not the same I know but it still effects the brain if it gets too large) they turned it around with meds and I think positive thinking on my part.

Kennedy is at Mass General Hospital, quite possibly the best hospital in the world.

The delegate from Jacksonville will yield the point...

Everything that you take for granted in your local hospital was invented here, beginning all the way back to anesthesia; without it, modern medicine is impossible.

CAT scans, laboratory tests, therapies, drugs, everything....MIT invents it, Mass General tests it, then the rest of you get it.

He truly couldn't be in better hands, and with his personal wealth and gold-plated US Senate health care plan, any treatment in the world is possible.

Brain Tumor At A Glance

Brain tumors can be either malignant or benign.

The causes of brain tumors are not known.

Brain tumors can occur at any age.

Primary brain tumors initially form in the brain tissue.

Secondary brain tumors are cancers that have spread to the brain tissue from tissue elsewhere in the body.

The symptoms of brain tumors depend on their size and their location in the brain.

Brain tumors are diagnosed by the doctor based on the results of a medical history and physical examination and results of a variety of specialized tests of the brain and nervous system.

Treatment of a brain tumor depends on the type, location, and size of the tumor, as well as the age and health of the patient.

For once, Dr. Sanjay Gupta can speak about what he knows.

Also, there is this...

Average survival can range from three to five years for moderately severe malignant gliomas to less than a year for very advanced and aggressive types such as glioblastomas.

And here is more about the area where his tumor is located.

Barack Obama, whose presidential bid was lifted in late January by Kennedy's enthusiastic endorsement, said he is saddened by the news, but remains optimistic.

"Ted Kennedy is a fighter," the Democratic front-runner said on CNN. "We want to make sure he's fighting this illness....He's not only a great senator, he's a great friend."

Obama said he would not be running for president if not for voting rights and civil rights battles won by Kennedy. "I stand on his shoulders," Obama said.

Watching the news, and doing the research as I go along, Tri. .

They have been interviewing Robert Bezell, and as he says things I google it.

From what he is saying the only way to know WHAT stage the tunor is is by surgery. According to him, he said they did do surgery. This is the only person I see confirming that.

I'll have to check the laws of this Commonwealth....if the Senator were to resign for health reasons, does Deval Patrick (D-MA, thank god for that!) appoint a replacement, or do we have a special election?

I have been told that the governor will appoint a replacement.

Post #1 in the discussion thread the Globe has open:

May God bless him and heal him. And hopefully this will finally mean that MA can have a new senator. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

Some folks "feel" awfully damn callous at inapproriate moments.

Edit: btw, thankfully Mitt Romney isn't Gov. of MA anymore.. Sorry, that's just how I feel.

For those not listening to Randi, she is saying that she believes Hillary will run for vice-president at the convention. It's a separate vote, and the delegates don't have to vote for the person that Obama picks.

I heard on the NPR mosheen that they did a biopsy. That is the extent of the surgery.

Heya everybody,

Just wanted to let you all know that I'll be blogging with you in spirit tonight, but won't be able to actually be online - I'm going in for a sleep study tonight (the docs' ongoing effort to try figure out why I am such an insomniac). Like I said, I'll be thinking of all of you and hoping for big numbers for Barack. Take care

Cheers,

KITTY UPDATE

The Kitties du Star are home and well. All their bloodwork looked normal this morning, so they seem to be in the clear.

They are funny animals; it was almost like they knew last night that they weren't in the clear yet and had to go back to the Vet this morning. They just couldn't get comfortable. But, today they got home and immediately went to their favorite chairs, etc and began an elaborate grooming process to get the vet "off."

They are such loves.

Yay! Rio, Cassie and Missy are very happy. :cat happy dance:

Thanks Mondo. Seems trivial on the tail of the news about Ted Kennedy. But, I am breathing a big sigh of relief. I don't know what I'd do without my babies.

 No, Star your kitties are not trivial at all! They bring you happiness and joy. They are your family.

Ted Kennedy is another thing entirely. I'm at a loss for words. But one thing I do know I will not be speculatating about his prognosis. I am just wishing him and his family, including the governor of California well.

I grew up not far from the Schriver estate. Ground Zero for the Special Olympics ya know.

A brain Biopsy still is surgery, and fairly serious surgery at that.

Star,

Even though I am a die-hard doggie grrrl, I am so relieved and happy to hear that your kitties are doing well and are back home. We all love our pets - they are indeed our family - I am really glad to hear the news that your kids are home and are okay

Check for other freecycle groups in your area. I'm signed up for about three or four near to me. Only one has a fairly steady flow of offers - the ratio of "wanted" to "offer" tends to be rather high on the rest of them.

I never see offers for coupons. I would say that the person administering your group is very slack - they should weed those out so they never show up on the site.

On the mundane side (and taking nothing away from the Kennedys and their troubles), I have to wonder why those jobs which I *want* I don't get but the ones that I know I'd hate always seem to want me.....

I was offered a two to three month temp assignment for $20 an hour - almost unheard of in Pittsburgh - for a financial company that seems to think a loosening of dress code means letting women wear pantsuits... I took one look at the place and knew I'd be going nuts in a week.

But I figured it would be a help towards getting on my feet financially after several weeks of no work. However, since I had already made travel plans that include Thursday and Friday, it's looking like I won't be getting that one anyway.

That is kinda odd.. Even if they were reporting the Eastern Time parts of the state and waiting on Central Time, I don't think the polls would close at 6PM anywhere in the country.

Edit: Keith just verified the polls closed that early. Very odd, but I suppose it's true.
