Fighting the Inevitable

With the recent Supreme Court non-decisions, the legality of gay marriage was decided in numerous states, as Federal District court decisions overturning anti-gay-marriage bans were allowed to stand. That means gay marriage is now legal in 30 states. While gay-rights supporters were jubilant, those who fear and loathe their fellow citizens who happen to have been born gay are having an opposite reaction.

As Amanda Marcotte writes, Gay marriage opponents [are] reduced to blabbering incoherently. She cites the example of Family Research Council President Tony Perkins who makes the hilarious claim that legalizing gay marriage is just like ignoring gravity:
“You can act like it’s not there, you can act like gravity doesn't work, but I'm going to tell you it will catch up with you sooner or later and you are going to hit the ground and culturally we are going to hit the ground by ignoring the realities of marriage,” he said.

Yes, it's just like that. In the race to the bottom for using obtuse analogies to support bigotry, a NC pastor invokes ebola:
During his Sunday sermon following a series of court actions that effectively struck down North Carolina’s constitutional ban on marriage equality, Berean Baptist Church Pastor Pastor Ron Baity suggested that homosexuality was a sign of the End Times.
[...]
Baity said that even after God flooded the Earth to stop homosexuality, people were “out of their habitation” in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

“They were doing something that was not normal, they were doing something that was not natural, and as a result of that, like God judged this world with a flood, he judged Sodom and Gomorrah with fire!” the pastor exclaimed.
[...]
“Listen, we’re not getting wiser, we’re getting dumber! We’re not getting smarter. My friend, we are meriting, we are bringing the judgement of God on this nation as sure as Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed, don’t be surprised at the plagues. Don’t be surprised at the judgement of God.”

“You think Ebola is bad now, just wait. If it’s not that, it’s going to be something else. My friends, I want you to understand, you can’t thumb your nose at God, and God turn his head away without God getting your attention.”

Elsewhere in North Carolina, a magistrate in Elizabeth City refused to marry a gay couple who showed up after the ban was lifted. The office is trying to dance around an excuse of "we didn't know what the procedure was", as if it would be any different than it would be for a straight marriage. Further south, Florida is now asking the FL State Supreme Court to rule on the legality of their state's gay marriage ban.

As these bans continue to fall, and as states without legalized gay marriage continue to be a shrinking minority, the country-wide legality of gay marriage seems inevitable. How marginalized will the haters become? What will be their next move?

Their next move appears to be carving out religious exceptions, such as legalized discrimination in employment, providing benefits, or services. It's like a gay version of Jim Crow.

What's next - "Straights Only" water fountains?

Never did I think my work would be related to Star Wars.

Until I was looking at a map of Cape Cod and saw that Route 6's nickname is "Grand Army of the Republic Highway"

Sometimes living in a country where the freedom of speech is guaranteed is a painful thing.

Like when it guarantees that bigoted fuckwits like Erick Erickson are allowed to say shit like this and get away with it.

Actually, they didn't. They're letting the PACs run the remaining TV spots while the party spends its money on an ENORMOUS GOTV push.

I was reading that after I saw the original story yesterday. That makes a lot more sense.

and to be honest, it would have been nice had the story been reported correctly to begin with. >(

HBO said Wednesday that it would make its HBO Go streaming service available to people without a pay-TV subscription starting in 2015.

Richard Plepler, HBO’s chief executive, made the announcement as part of a presentation during Time Warner’s annual shareholder meeting. The move is part of a four-pronged growth strategy Plepler outlined for HBO. The home to current hit shows such as Game of Thrones, True Detective and past classics including The Wire and The Sopranos is a key part of Time Warner’s overall strategy to increase its share price and prove to investors that it was justified in rejecting the roughly $80 billion unsolicited takeover offer extending by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox over the summer.
