Our long national nightmare is over.
The Primary season has finally come to a close. No more speaches, no more talking heads, no more tortured math about the popular vote. Barack Obama collected enough delegates yesterday to clinch the nomination. He WILL be the nominee for the Democratic Party in the fall.
There will be the desperate naysayers. There will be those hanging on to the notion that enough superdelegates could be persuaded to change their minds to deliver the nomination to Senator Clinton. Despite their pleas, despite their rationalization, despite their fuzzy math, it will not happen. The Clintons are a powerful political force, but the electorate is more so, and the electorate has spoken.
There was hope and there were expectations that Clinton would concede the victory last night, but she did not. Her motivations for not exiting gracefully when it's clear that she's lost the race may never be known for sure. Is she hoping to change the minds of the superdelegates?... Does she think that not conceding will give her more leverage for a veep slot?... Does she hope that more people will contribute to her campaign to help her retire her debt?
The reality is that she still wields a tremendous amount of power in this election. She has a huge number of supporters, some of them quite rabid. She can control whether Obama or McCain wins in the fall. She cannot, however, control whether she gets the top slot, something that she must come to terms with. If she were to tell all of her supporters "I want you to vote for Obama in November", I suspect a large number that are saying they'd vote for McCain over Obama would heed her words. The threatened migration of Hillary supports across party lines would not happen.
She won't do that until the last night of the convention. That is her biggest ace in the hole, and she is smart not to play it until she gets whatever she can at the convention. I just hope she puts country and party above herself when it comes down to it.
For now we can breathe again, and put our support behind Obama. This is an historic moment. He has done what has only been attempted by others in the past like Shirley Chisholm, Carol Moseley Braun, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. He is the other bookend that began in 1872 with John Roy Lynch and Frederick Douglass (whose running mate was a woman!).
More importanly though, he is our candidate, an erudite man that cares about ALL Americans, and will lead our country the way he ran his primary campaign: with grace, humility, and a velvet hammer when needed. He is a man for the people, of the people, and selected by the people.

I was going to use today to gloat all over the Stooges at the liveblog, but following the example of OUR nominee, I will refrain and simply say how unfortunate it is that some Hillary supporters just can't seem to let go. I noticed that Adele is bringing up the allegedly shocking "Why'd he" video. Sad, really.

I think that your advice is sound. Maybe the Stephanie Miller Show team has decided enough is enough. Let us try to convince Clinton's supporters that what unites Democrats and progressives is more powerful and important than what divides us.

Great post BobR! And I agree with you. I was so hoping to hear her finally be gracious and bow out........... sadly she did not. And worse, she wants us to go to her website to tell her what we think, but when you go you are met with a pop-up box asking for your opinion - your ONLY choice? Excellent post-mortem analysis:
By itself, Clinton's Iraq vote didn't cost her the nomination. There were other culprits: her ever-changing campaign themes, poor financial planning, squabbling staff and a field organizing plan designed for quick victory rather than a 50-state delegate hunt.

It's an inartful way of expressing the fact that half the Dem party supports her. She's earned that support - and what her career is in the future will largely dictate how half of the party reacts in the Fall.

WEll that is indeed true. I am not taking any of that away from here. I guess, I think that the SHE shoudl be able to make come of these choices on her own.
If she wants the Majority Position, she should be able to go for it, but it is strange that so many think that soemthing needs to be *done* with her.
Does that make any sense? She will STILL have a senate position when this is all over. I really would love for her to get her supporters together to PLEASE rally around our Nominee. That would go a long way to healing things.

I don't much like the term "done" either. It reminds me of putting an ill animal "out to pasture." She has incredible strength - she is my Senator - I will vote for her again should she choose to run.
But in this presidential race, she has earned spoils. That's just politics. I wish there was no quid pro quo, but at least for her supporters, there likely is. And the "quo" is necessary to elect Obama - probably for Clinton herself, but for her supporters.

I think that there is a difference between supporting Israel and supporting the policies of the Likud and other right wing parties and their supporters.
Both the Israelis and the Palestinians want peace and security. The hardliners on either side have delivered neither.
Sam Seder recently quoted a poll where 64 percent of Israelis support talking directly to Hamas. So, should not U.S. policy in the region respect the wishes of the majority of Israelis and Palestinians?
Contrary to what some of McCain's supporters claim, no U.S. president will throw Israel to the wolves. However, I do think Obama should make negotiating a peace settlement a high priority. This may be a good way to put Bill Clinton to use in his administration. At least he can tell the difference between a loofah and a falafel, unlike some hosts at Faux Noise.

I just hope he won't pander to the Hawkish Israel expansionists at the speech.
I think that there is a difference between supporting Israel and supporting the policies of the Likud and other right wing parties and their supporters.
Both the Israelis and the Palestinians want peace and security. The hardliners on either side have delivered neither.
Sam Seder recently quoted a poll where 64 percent of Israelis support talking directly to Hamas. So, should not U.S. policy in the region respect the wishes of the majority of Israelis and Palestinians?
Contrary to what some of McCain's supporters claim, no U.S. president will throw Israel to the wolves. However, I do think Obama should make negotiating a peace settlement a high priority. This may be a good way to put Bill Clinton to use in his administration. At least he can tell the difference between a loofah and a falafel, unlike some hosts at Faux Noise.

I will go with that. We need a filibuster-proof majority so that the Republicans can't mess things up. Or better yet, a veto-proof majority to send them back to irrelevance.

DNC Leadership says all SDs should declare by Friday

I have posted on the SMS Live blog and the only reason I haven't lately is because of the troll atmosphere which may now be getting reigned in. Clay seems to have come around and SMH was banned. So now it depends on what Donnie and Adela do, since they are continuing the fight and would support McCain despite his horrific record for progressives.
