The Ugliness of the McCampaign
Author: BobR    Date: 06/25/2008 12:19:39

With the conventions still two months away, the campaign season is already in full swing. Both candidates have vowed to run a clean campaign. Whether they will remains to be seen; whether they have is open for interpretation. For the groups and high-profile individuals who support the candidates, it's business as usual. Here's a sampling of some of the less savory items out there...

First up we have Laura Ingraham on FAUX News. I was at a place that had the TV tuned to that wretched station and the sound turned down. I saw this graphic on the screen:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a360/BobR_69/AAP/Kim_Obama_Ingraham.jpg

I didn't need to hear the audio to know what she was trying to do. Actually, that may be the intent of those that design the graphics for FAUX News. They know that their show may be on TVs and bars and gyms where the sound is not turned up. A patron's quick glance would capture the picture of Kim Jong Il and the words "Obama Supporter", and that would be imprinted on their subconscious.

Next up we have our favorite religious nutjob the Rev. Dobson, saying that Obama is distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution:
"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy — chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

So the Old Testament doesn't apply anymore, Mr. Dobson? Does that include what the Old Testament says about gays? I don't remember Jesus saying anything about dietary codes, but I do remember him saying things about helping those less fortunate and not being judgemental. Frederick Clarkson has a very good take on Dobson's credibility, re: religious and Constitutional interpretation.

Moving on, author David Freddoso - responsible for the smearboat book "Unfit for Command" which attacked John Kerry - is releasing a book with a similar intention aimed at Obama called "The Case Against Barack Obama":
Conservative journalist David Freddoso’s “The Case Against Barack Obama” will offer “a comprehensive, factual look at Obama,” according to Regnery Publishing president and publisher Marjory Ross.

But the book’s subtitle makes clear its perspective: “The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate.”

Ross contends that the mainstream media has offered insufficient scrutiny of Obama and likens the goal of Freddoso’s book to that of “Unfit for Command,” the scathing assessment of Kerry’s war record that rocketed to No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list.

By highlighting negative aspects of Obama’s record and background, Ross says, Freddoso may compel others to offer more critical coverage of the Democratic nominee.

“I think it’s critically important that the country gets a clear and honest view of who is running and what they stand for — warts and all,” Ross says. “With ‘Unfit for Command,’ like ‘The Case against Barack Obama,’ we believe the media has whitewashed the candidate.”

As I questioned previously on the 4F message forum, will he be doing a book providing similar scrutiny of McCain?... Don't we deserve the same "clear and honest view" of him as well?... I'm not holding my breath for that.

So let us compare and contrast... In the news yesterday was Tran Trong Duyet, the man who actually held John McCain captive during the Viet Nam war. He claims that McCain wasn't tortured while under his care, and that he actually liked McCain, they struck up a friendship, and he supports McCain for president. Will we see that splashed in a graphic in the MSM? I doubt it.

His comments raise the question was John McCain really tortured (beyond the initial 3 or 4 days)? If not, why did he release so many tapes critical of the west? That question has been asked in an online column by Douglas Valentine:
McCain, in his carefully prepared statements, claims he was tortured while in solitary confinement, and that is why he signed a confession saying, “I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate. I almost died and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors.”

However, on March 25, 1999, two of his fellow POWs, Ted Guy and Gordon "Swede" Larson told the Phoenix New Times that, while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.

As Larson said, "My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted's knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from."

This column raises some questions and makes some pointed commentary. Those that support McCain would have a fair argument that it's a smear because there is little hard evidence. The comments by Mr. Duyet, however would certainly seem to corroborate some of it, if you think he's believable. Still - this isn't coming from a major religious leader, a major news network, or a best-selling author.

That - I think - makes all the difference.

Excellent Post BobR,

I think that McSame's campaign will be about as clean as a fast food dumpster at closing time (groooosssss :P). I just wish the MSM would tackle a few of these descrepencies that you've pointed out and investigate them with the same vigor they have reserved for the Obama/Muslim/Madrasa stories. BTB, I added a new post over on my blog talking abit about the politicization of the DOJ. More fun and games :rage:

Cheers,

mfaye

I don't usually wish physical harm on another person.. but there are a few exceptions to the rule. I've now added Laura Ingraham to the list - If I ever meet her, imma punch her right in her grill.

But I digress.. hey look storm pics from yesterday!

Speaking of taking something awful and turning it into something positive. . .

This show, The Exonerated just came to my area. I missed the opportunity to see it, but a good friend went and said it was amazing!!

It's about people that were mistakenly committed of crimes and spent time in prison for it. . . one guy was in prison 18 years based on an Eyewitness account. Scary stuff.

They had talk backs after the show and statistics were given that the United States believes 5% of people in Prison are innocent. The woman said it probably was more around 10%, because of course the Government would down play it, and that equates to about 50,000 people. . . innocently convicted and serving time.

Regarding the Sermon on the Mount, do you think Sen. Obama might be referring to the passage noted in Matthew 7:1-6?

1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

6"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

Mornin' Starling,

Last year we had an exonerated ex-death row inmate come to talk to the law school where I work - it was a powerful presentation. I hope it inspired at least a few law students to plan to work for inmates' rights when they finish school. Not much money in that type of work, but the rewards of giving somebody their life back has got to be tremendous :)

Good morning all.

I had a really rough night last night. On the way home from work, I am heading on the parkway and I see two lights barreling at such speed that I thought I was going to get rear-ended. I go to the right lane to avoid the oncoming vehicle and the next thing I hear is a thud on the passenger side of my car and I see a motorcycle flying off onto the grass. I pull over, call 911 and someone else must have called also because the police, fire and ambulances came pretty fast. They took the two people on the motorcycle to the hospital for injuries. While talking to the police and state troopers apparently the two lights I saw behind me were motorcycles and one of them was the one that sideswiped my car after I changed lanes to avoid the two motorcycles. And after all that I had to have the tow truck jump my car battery since I left my car lights on while I had been pulled over.

I finally got home at 2:30 and just felt really bummed out and I'm supposed to be in at noon today to do overtime. It just feels like my luck continues to suck. I just hope the two people are OK but the police say based on witness reports that the accident is their fault for going too fast.

The Court has released the opinion in Exxon v. Baker (07-219), on the validity of the $2.5 billion punitive damages award to victims of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The ruling below, which upheld the award, is vacated and remanded.

Justice Souter wrote the opinion. All Justices concurred in the judgment, except Justice Alito, who took no part. We will provide a link to the decision as soon as it is available.

======================================================

Also: In Exxon, the Court holds that the punitives are limited to $507.5 million.

In Exxon, the punitive damage ruling is 5-3.

From Scotus Blog: "The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that it is unconstitutional to impose the death penalty for the crime of raping a child, when the victim does not die and death was not intended. The ruling split the Court 5-4. The decision nullified a Louisiana law that provided capital punishment for raping a child under age 12. The law was since amended to apply to raping a child under age 13."

From the AP:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cut the $2.5 billion punitive damages award in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster to $500 million.

The court ruled that victims of the worst oil spill in U.S. history may collect punitive damages from Exxon Mobil Corp., but not as much as a federal appeals court determined.

Justice David Souter wrote for the court that punitive damages may not exceed what the company already paid to compensate victims for economic losses, about $500 million compensation.

Exxon asked the high court to reject the punitive damages judgment, saying it already has spent $3.4 billion in response to the accident that fouled 1,200 miles of Alaska coastline.

A jury decided Exxon should pay $5 billion in punitive damages. A federal appeals court cut that verdict in half.

If I thought that's what actual damages were for. Punitive damages are supposed to be like fines - a monetary penalty in leiu of locking the entire company up in jail.

It looks like SCOTUS will be giving the ruling on the Gun case tomorrow.

Tomorrow, the Court will issue its remaining three decisions: Heller (DC Guns), Davis v. FEC (campaign finance), and American Electric Power (energy contracts).

===================

As Tom previously mentioned, it is quite likely that Justice Scalia is writing the majority opinion in the Guns case and that Justice Alito is writing the opinion in the election case, Davis v. FEC. The author of American Electric Power is harder to predict.

==========-========

Clarification: while it appears that Justice Scalia has the principle opinion in the Guns case, it is not necessarily a majority opinion. It could be a plurality opinion.

Holy shit livin.. here's hoping those folks weren't seriously injured, and that they smarten up a bit speed-wise.

Back around 2000 I had a short stint as a taxi driver - and I had two incidents with people on bicycles running into my cab.....deliberately, for insurance money. Even knowing that fact I didn't feel very good after either incident.. bit of a shell shock. Hang in there man.

Quote by livingonli:

Gosh Livin,

I'm glad that you are okay - how's your car? Don't beat yourself up over this - IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT - it seems that the motorcylclist were asking for an accident as they were clearly speeding. Take good care today - you are a hero in my book :D

Cheers,

mfaye

These Tanya Roberts / Tahiti Village commercials annoy me to no end. First of all, Tanya Roberts is a "designer" for the resort? In what way? What did she "design"?

Second - this is a timeshare "resort", and if they're giving away a free weekend, it comes with strings attached, namely - you'll have to sit through at least one very hard-sell presentation.

Third - I looked at the location of the place on a map. It's at the very end of strip next to the interstate. Woo-freakin'-hoo...

It's right up there with Infomercials where washed up performers go to salvage what's left of their careers.

And at the far end of the strip. Not the most convenient place, probably can't even get to the monorail to get around unlike places located more closely on the strip.

The car has side damage. Some of the exterior tore off on the passenger side and I lost my passenger side rear-view mirror . It will be interesting to see what the insurance company says when they look at it. Considering the age of my car, I wonder if they will rule it out as a total loss. The only consolation for that is it would give me a down payment on another car although the best I could afford possibly is another used car.

The White House in December refused to accept the Environmental Protection Agency’s conclusion that greenhouse gases are pollutants that must be controlled, telling agency officials that an e-mail message containing the document would not be opened, senior E.P.A. officials said last week.

The document, which ended up in e-mail limbo, without official status, was the E.P.A.’s answer to a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that required it to determine whether greenhouse gases represent a danger to health or the environment, the officials said.

The Supreme Court has by a 5-4 vote decided that a Louisiana law that allows CHILD RAPIST to get the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment. How nice that the child that grows up in hell gets no choice. These scums of society do not care how horrible they leave a child feeling FOREVER we get a life sentence and some take their own life. I am sorry but i have no compassion for these pieces of SH**. Just my humble opinion.

As TriSec mentioned previously, child molesters do not have a long life expectancy in prison, and their demise via "prison justice" will be more gruesome than what they would receive from the state.

For the majority of inmates, someone who does something to children or is exceptionally cruel with animals is even out of bounds for them and the inmates that will make that person's life very brief if not unpleasant.

Has anyone else noticed that prices seem to have peaked for the moment? I have two stations around me with regular at $3.99, and the Hess in Watertown square has been selling it at $4.05 for the past 10 days or so...

By me, regular gas is between $4.19 and $4.25 a gallon. The Citgo station by work dd drop the price of Diesel from $5.09 to $4.99.

I quit believing in the death penalty.

One, a long life to regret misdeeds and two, what if? What if it turns out everybody was wrong? It was the wrong guy, everything looked bad, all the witnesses thought it was him. A faultless system would still never sanction institutional murder in any civilzed society.

It costs more than a life term in prison to put a prisoner to death and in the end it is state sponsored murder.

Check the "death cert" for any inmate put to death - it says homicide not "justice"

There is a different justice system inside a prison - most prisoners have wives, G-friends and or kids. They never want a rapist or molestor to get out and that makes some sense.

State sponsored murder should be reserved for only politicians and dictators that start wars.

Me as well, capt. I ahve come to believe that justice woul be best served in removing someof these people forever from society.

If I do not believe in killing, then that would have to included the death penalty. In the end the financial costs for killing a person have been proven time and time again is more than putting a person in jail for the rest of thier natural life, and like I said what good comes of it? I myself have thankfully never been tested, but I don't like seeing state sanctioned murder. I am against it.

The thing that changed my mind - more than anything else - I watched a show about some murderer A**hole - killed a few people. Long story short, This lady, the mother of her only daughter - murdered. Her husband has passed away too. She made a passionate plea to the judge to SPARE the murderers life!

(it almost makes me well up even now)

She said she didn't want a death to be associated with her or her dead daughter, that she didn't live that way. That she suffered such a great and permanent loss of her only child - she didn't want the mother of the murderer to suffer that way.

OMG - no BS religiosity or some kind of better than thou stuff yet no forgiveness. The strength of this lady and the truth her words spoke was amazing. This lady knew the real value of life and that it really means so much more than revenge even if that revenge is righteous and justified.

That stupid TV show changed the way I think forever.

Seriously, this is a very cool story.
With Democrat senator Barack Obama busy in the run-up to the US presidential polls, a group of well-wishers in the capital have decided to send him a symbol of his lucky charm, Lord Hanuman, to help him emerge victorious.

Obama's representative Carolyn Sauvage-Mar on Tuesday received a gold-plated two-feet-high idol which she will pass it on to the Obama after it is sanctified.

The idol is being presented to Obama as he is reported to be a Lord Hanuman devotee and carries with him a locket of the monkey god along with other good luck charms.

It looks like Friday is when the insurance company is sending an assessor to look at my car. So, I'll find out then what it costs to fix and whether or not it will be totaled out I'm still kind of mixed about it because of my tight financial situation. Much as I could use a newer car, I have to make sure I can afford the payments.

I hope you have as good luck as we did. Joy was hit by a gal running a red light. Took out the front of our Ford. GEICO was our insurance and we have no complaints. I never thought I would have anything good to say about an insurance company. Nobody was hurt so it might have simplified everything. When all was said and done they fixed the car and we only had to pay for one days car rental.

I just paid off my truck, so I'd be pissed if it got totalled. The car I had before it was an 88 Buick that got totalled when somebody t-boned me running a red light. I didn't want to take on a payment either, but it was kind of nice having a vehicle that wasn't prone to break down, the A/C worked reliably etc.

I suppose you could look at it that way - if they total your vehicle, you might have to take on a car payment, but you might offset some of that by having fewer car repair bills.

I understand perfectly and with everything wrong with my car now, at least if the car is totalled out, that would give me money for a down payment. And it certainly would help to have A/C again with the hot summer approaching. I guess I've just been worried about the financial situation I have been in since I was out of work and the pay cut that I took while all my other expenses keep going up. If I have to get another car, I will find a way to make it work and hopefully I can still get something under $10,000.

Going to drive to see the lake............ Michigan that is........... I hear its pretty darn big!! I hope to be able to hear SMS for as long as I can!

One small hitch. Last night I was able to snag a car. Kept mouth shut as my manager told me to........... Those darn people in "Transportation". Early this morning she taps me on the shoulder and makes me turn over the keys.

:grumble:

Evening, folks! :martini:

I was out scrumming in the dirt today...trimmed my tomatoes (several green ones already present), harvested some dill, transplanted a couple of zucchinis and staked the aforementioned tomatoes and the sunflowers. I feel like such a farmer....and I live in the city!

Remember this Warning. Gamers are the types that grow up to be programers, and hackers. Hacking your cable signal is easy to them.

Be nice to your gamer friends. They will rule the world.

I watcehd it. I was great and incredibly sad.

I think it should be required viewing for every American. You want to know what is wrong with America today? this is it, right there.

it isn't JUST NCLB, it is the entire system from Parents being too busy, to not there at all to underfunding schools to just plain old kids to need to be sent to Juvie. It is all there.

Just remember, there are no do over's once you get out of school.
