The Road to Nowhere
Author: BobR    Date: 2015-07-29 10:51:02

On Sunday June 21st of this year, a truck carrying a woman and 3 other occupants to visit her father for Father's Day was crossing a bridge on a local highway in Hunt County, TX. For no apparent reason, the bridge collapsed beneath her truck. The occupants were able to escape the partially submerged truck with help from bystanders.

Nearly one month later in western California, on Sunday July 19th, a truck was driving on I-10 headed east. As the truck was crossing a river, the bridge collapsed beneath it, leaving the truck stranded precariously. The injured driver was rescued.

What makes this more disturbing is that the bridge was still operational even though it had been flagged as "functionally obsolete". In fact, well over 10% of ALL the bridges in the US have been flagged as "structurally deficient". Even more than that have been flagged as "functionally obsolete" (like the one that collapsed in California). Nearly 24% have been flagged as "Defective". That means that 48% of our bridges are desperately in need of repair. Statistically speaking, that means every time you drive over a bridge, there's a 50% chance it could collapse beneath you at any time.

You'd think that Congress would be falling all over themselves to do something about this. They are always trumpeting that they're working to keep Americans safe. They know that Americans need jobs. It seems like a no-brainer. When it's a Republican-controlled Congress, however, "no brainer" is a perfect description.

In 2 days, we will run out of funds to repair and maintain our highways. Two... short... days...

It's not like highway funding is a surprise - it's a well-known function of government. But like everything else, it gets pushed down to the wire, as Republicans try to slap on amendment after amendment in the highway bill, including one to repeal Obamacare. If that seems shortsighted, stupid, galling, and irresponsible, well - yes... it is. It's aggravating enough when Congressmen and/or Senators amend and change a good bill until it's bloated and unrecognizable, but when it gets to the point of compromising our safety for political ideology, it's a bridge too far (pun intended).

Meanwhile, like every other embattled funding bill, Republicans are saying we can't afford it. Like our larger funding bills, they create stop-gap bills to limp from one crisis to the next. Right now they are proposing a 3 month bill to buy time to create a more comprehensive bill. They had a 5 month stop-gap bill in the Senate, but the House shortened it to 3 months. Why? It makes no sense. Even 5 months doesn't provide enough time for long-game planning for any real projects.

The U.S. government wastes a lot of money on stupid things - rebuilding our infrastructure is not one of them. When a lot of our modern infrastructure was originally built, the middle class boomed. That infrastructure is now becoming decrepit and needs repair and replacement. The jobs these types of projects will create will help the economy, bring down unemployment, and increase tax revenues. Republicans hate government-created jobs, but the private sector is not going to rebuild roads and bridges unless someone pays them, and that has to be the government.

This is not going to get better without Congress taking action. That they don't is enough to drive anyone to drink. Just don't drive over a bridge - the life you save may be your own.

Well, not only is my daily drive to work bone jarring with potholes and patch work, now I'm going to feel lucky every time I drive over a bridge and it doesn't crumb beneath us.

The biggest symbol of our bumbling infrastructure is the Arlington Memorial bridge - two lanes and walkways are closed indefinitely.

This is just really sad. The GOP says we can't afford it, I say we can't afford NOT to.

ikr! There are 2 bridges that I've been crossing more of lately - both go over the Potomac one into Charles Town, WV and one into Point of Rocks. They look sturdy, but I worry every time, its a long way down.

Of course we can afford it. Mothball a few carriers. Cancel a few aviation programs. Get our troops home. Stop being the world's policeman.

Go on into the "Cost of War" link on any given week, and play with some of the tradeoffs.

It's all about priorities. War is a priority. Domestic policy is not.

Maybe the bridge build and repair folks need some powerful lobbyists

I have found it surprisingly difficult to find a national database of bridges and their inspection results. It seems each state maintains their own, and even that is difficult to navigate.

Here's the one for northern VA. Good luck with figuring that out.

There's a column for "Func Obslt". If it has an FO in it, that bridge is "Functionally Obsolete", The column next to it indicates if the bridge is structurally deficient.

It's the one running between Arlington Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. It has statues, but they're not lions

That's the one - don't know why I remember them as lions - had to kind a visualize it in my head since any time I go into DC its via Metro (and that's starting to become concerning too)

Good morning, bloggers!! I hope that everyone is well.

I have seen the need for more infrastructure. We have had a major bridge closed and not replaced. We need to ask what our nation's priorities should be.

As for the political season, it is too early to really rely on the polls as most voters are disengaged. The polls now tend to tell what those most interested in politics will do. So, as far as I am concerned, no one has a lock on any party's nomination.

So, that turned out to be an angst-laden experience with Ye Olde RMV this morning.

I have a "vintage" green plate, last issued by this Commonwealth better than a decade ago. For years, the state has been trying to get these off the road; forcibly rejecting them at inspection time if the plates "look old".

Indeed, the inspection station at the dealer rejected my NEW CAR for this reason today. Fortunately, the old-boy network is still in effect around here, and the salesman sent me around the corner to an offsite inspection that he knew "always passes the plate". In turn, they reimbursed me the fee and threw in two free oil changes for my trouble.

And I still keep my vintage plate...which I have had since 1990.

Are they all deep-dish or are there places that od conventional styles? I guess I'm used to New York pizzerias although I did sometimes go to Pizzeria Uno which did deep-dish pizzas even though it's a chain.

The cost isn't the issue so much as her seemingly constant need to hide everything she does from "prying eyes". People in general are already wary of secrecy in government, and she is putting out this aura of "I'll tell you what you need to know - you just need to trust me".
