Sly, like a............ Author: velveeta jonesDate:07/27/2008 03:39:03
Velveeta was all set to write another installment of "A Southern Ladies Guide to Gentleman Callers" but was then stymied by the scandalous information about FOX news. Apparently, FOX News may not be "Fair And Balanced" after all! It seems they might be a tool of the right-wing branch of neo-cons. I for one, am shocked!
So, with fainting couch close at hand, I read the accusations. Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan admitted that the White House used FOX commentators as their spokespeople, feeding them information that they wanted the American audience to hear, regardless of any "facts". Mr. McClellan, aka Puffy McMoonFace, recently told Chris Matthews on Hardball, "There were (FOX) commentators and pundits who were useful to the White House...... we were getting them Talking Points."
Well, Mr. Puffy McMoonFace (so called because of his overly round face, and his penchant for blowing up like a Puffer fish when he is caught in a lie) should know. He would have been the one issuing the memos.
Wikipedia defines Talking Points as "a neologism for an idea which may or may not be factual, usually compiled in a short list with summaries of a speaker's agenda for public or private engagements. Public relations professionals, for example, sometimes prepare "talking points memos" for their clients to help them more effectively conform public presentations with this advice"
Indeed, the "Talking Point" has proven to be quite effective in repressive regimes that want to keep people either lulled into complacency, or revved up to kill your neighbor on a whim. These tactics have worked well in the former USSR (Pravda), the Third Reich, (Nazi Propaganda), and Cuba (Cuban News Agency), to name but a few. Looks like FOX NEWS may soon join the ranks of these old ships.
Let's looks at how this might work; lets say the Bush/Cheney Regime, er, I mean, the White House, wants you to believe that monkeys regularly fly out of Barack Obama's ass. They would send a memo to FOX which would read something like this:
White House memo: Monkeys regularly fly out of Barack Obama's ass.
Which would end up on The Factor like this:
Bill O'Reilly: "Now most of you are aware that monkeys have been known to fly out of Barack Obama's ass quite often - I've informed you of this time and again. And anyone who doesn't know this is either dopey or not paying attention."
And then on FOX "news" like this:
Brit Hume: "It was revealed earlier today, that once again, monkeys might have been flying out of Barack Obama's ass. More on that later........"
And of course on the ubiquitous crawl at the bottom of the screen:
Some say that monkeys have been flying out of Barack Obama's ass.
Repeat it often enough and mix in just enough "reality" TV, an voila!, instant Freeper!
Note how they use hypothetical situational verbs and tenses like "might" and "some say". Why - it sounds like they are actually reporting news, when in fact, some would say......... they are NOT!
And FOX News they did this again and again. For example, they repeatedly fed us this old yarn about how Saddam/Iraq had a hand in the attack on Sept. 11, 2001. Back in March and April of 2003 FOX began to show that France was in bed with Saddam Hussein. Of course, the White House was angry at France who had opposed the invasion of Iraq from the start. So, FOX begins running old footage of Saddam Hussein's September 1975 trip to Paris to meet with (then Mayor of Paris) Jacques Chirac and tour a nuclear power plant. Curiously, and despite FOX's claim to be "Fair and Balanced," they failed to inform us about another trip four years later, this one to Baghdad on December 19, 1983 made by Reagan envoy Donald Rumsfeld. They also inexplicably forgot to tell us about another trip by Rummy to Baghdad, this time on March 24, 1984, the very same day that a U.N. team found that Iraqi forces had used mustard gas laced with a nerve agent on Iranian soldiers.
And looky, there's even a picture of the happy day!
For all the patriotism that FOX seems to endlessly parade at us via flag pins, flying flag graphics, and Patriotic music, they don't actually want to hear what every American has to say. Especially if you're black!
Oh! To be a fly on the wall at a FOX board of directors meeting:
Winfred: Oh my God. There's black people in America! But maybe they won't notice when we continually say racist things. Dalton: You mean like calling Michelle Obama a "baby momma"? Bunny: Or saying that the Obama's little love gesture is a "terrorist fist jab"?
Well, recently the group Color of Change started a petition drive to tell Fox News chief Roger Ailes to stop these incessant racist smears. They hoped for 100,000 signatures and received over 600,000. But, when rapper Nas tried to deliver the 19 boxes of signed petitions to FOX headquarters, he was not surprisingly, turned away. (He was later welcomed by Stephan Colbert on one of the best Colbert Reports ever.)
What ever will it take to get these corporate hacks, haters and whores off of our TV machines? Both Left and Right are unethical to trade OUR news for THEIR propaganda! The airwaves belong to us and we must demand that they remain ours.
And must we continue to endure the likes of the Scotty McClellans of the world that will stand up and lie to the American people, all while calling themselves “Patriots” and buying more stock in the military industrial complex? Only then to coincidently get a conscience and a book deal at the same time?
Why, next thing you know, they'll be after the internet and blogs; paying me to write what I'm told! And then you'd miss out on next weeks blog, where Velveeta will be writing about Antebellum Needlepoint!
And it still amazes me that people treat Fox News as if it were a credible news organization. I guess they will cover more McCain rallies by running footage from a McCain 2000 rally like they did the other day.

Good morning!
Faux Spews - UGH! "Z" snap - hate 'em.
Sadly - I hold nearly as low opinion of all M$M news-o-tainment.
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage against an Islamic civil rights group over its use of a portion of his show in which he called the Quran a "book of hate."
Savage sued the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, for copyright infringement and racketeering lawsuit late last year, claiming the group violated his rights by using a segment of his "Savage Nation" show in a letter-writing campaign to get advertisers to boycott the program. In the broadcast used by CAIR, Savage also called the Muslim holy book "a throwback document."
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC NEWS: Senator Obama was in London this morning, and he was responding to your comments from yesterday when you said that 16 months might be a pretty good timetable in Iraq.
He said, "We’re pleased to see that there’s been some convergence around proposals we’ve been making for a year-and-a-half."
SEN JOHN MCCAIN: That’s really good. Look, it’s not a timetable, as I said. I was asked, how does that sound? Anything sounds good to me, but...
STEPHANOPOULOS: But you never used the word before.
MCCAIN: ... you know, the point is...
STEPHANOPOULOS: You made a point of never using...
MCCAIN: ... I never...
STEPHANOPOULOS: ... the word before.
MCCAIN: Look, I have always said, and I said then, it’s the conditions on the ground. If Senator Obama had had his way, we’d have been out last March, and we’d been out in defeat and chaos, and probably had to come back again because of Iranian influence.
It’s conditions on the ground — the way that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, the way that General Petraeus has said — conditions on the ground, so that the Iraqi government can have control, can have the sufficient security, so that we don’t have to come back. Senator Obama said that if his date didn’t work, we may have to come back.
We’re not coming home in victory. We’re coming home in victory.
STEPHANOPOULOS: But it does seem...
MCCAIN: But it is a — it is not a date. I want to make it very clear to you, it is not a date. It’s conditions on the ground.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So, you shouldn’t have used the word timetable.
MCCAIN: Pardon me?
STEPHANOPOULOS: You shouldn’t have used the word timetable.
MCCAIN: I didn’t use the word timetable. That I did — if I did...
Maybe McCain makes more sense on the video?

tears stream down my face

inside, my agony shows its power
like a raging fire it consumes me
leaves me spent like an ash
diluted by my tears into nothingness

Hi mfaye, nope, no jackpot for me. Although I still can use the money since I could use it to pay off my debt and get a new car. So, I am stuck driving my 14-year old now banged up jalopy which has some engine glitches and it's book value isn't worth fixing.
I don't have to go back to work until Wednesday so there is much to be done.
And right now we are having a beaut of a thunderstorm.
Back in the United States, McCain sought to turn Obama's trip against him, suggesting it was a slight to U.S. voters.
"This week the presidential contest was a long-distance affair, with my opponent touring various continents," the Arizona senator said in a U.S. radio address.
"With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Senator Obama now addressing his speeches to 'the people of the world,' I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are too."
And ... good afternoon everyone! Faye, So glad you have your babies back at home.

From TPM cafe'
Obama campaign response to Senator McCains latest attack ad:
John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign. Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run, said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.
FLASHBACK - Senator McCain in 2007: How can we possibly find honor in using the fate of our servicemen to score political advantage in Washington? There is no pride to be had in such efforts. We are at war, a hard and challenging war, and we do no service for the best of us-those who fight and risk all on our behalf-by playing politics with their service. [Congressional Record, 5/24/07]
We need to round up any and all that would vote for this guy and get them some hardcore counseling - they must be out of their heads. . .

Heya Kids,
Was anybody watching Obama address the Unity (Journalists of Color) Conference? He actually got a question from a Native journalist who asked him whether he would consider offering a formal apology (like the one offered recently in Australia) to Natives in this country. Obama, as always, gave a nuanced, very thoughtful response - he essentially said that "actions speak louder than words," in other words it is past time that the federal gov't steps up and begins to correct some of the long-standing ills that exist in Indian Country - I continue to be impressed with Obama's ability to honestly answer hard questions without resorting to cliches or sound bites. Just mho.

Why didn't McCain want to see the troops in March?
The curious thing about John McCain's dishonorable attack on Barack Obama is that McCain himself visited Europe in March, but didn't visit the wounded troops in Landstuhl, Germany.
It's true that McCain's trip to Europe bypassed Germany -- he only went to London and Paris. But as you can see in the map below, it turns out that London and Berlin are about the same distance from Landstuhl, and Paris is just a four hour drive away.
So if McCain wanted to visit the troops, it would have been trivial to arrange -- no seismic event needed. But it's clear McCain didn't want to visit them, and as a result, it should be fair to ask McCain why he now feels entitled to attack Barack Obama.
Following Obama's trip abroad, it looked like the McCain campaign had lost a key talking point about Obama's failure to visit Iraq and Afghanistan recently enough.
But have no fear. Here's McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds on CNN today:
In fact, [Obama's] never met with President Uribe in Colombia, as John McCain has. He has still yet to take a trip to Mexico City to have those meetings there and his relationship with Canada, I think, took a turbulent roll through the primaries. So I think actually if you're to look at the experience of both candidates, that there are very telling differences.
These meetings that Barack Obama had taken throughout the week were a lot of meetings that John McCain was making for the fifth, sixth or seventh time in many cases, and these were his first meetings. So to compare them on the substance, we think, is really incomparable.
Is this guy for real? He really wants Barack to make a speech to some huge crowd in Mexico too?

I think the McCain camp is doing anything they can to get Barack out of the country, they think it is to their advantage.
I swear I thought it was a satire headline when I first read it.
"Senator Obama had hoped to and had every intention of visiting our troops to express his appreciation and gratitude for their service to our country," retired Air Force Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser, said in a statement. "We learned from the Pentagon [Wednesday] night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event. Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event . . . and decided instead not to go."
The Pentagon said on Friday that it did not prevent an Obama visit.
"Nobody denied Senator Obama the opportunity to visit our wounded being cared for at Landstuhl. Obviously, as a sitting senator, he has an interest in that and can certainly visit in an official capacity," said Bryan Whitman, a spokesman for the Pentagon, who added that there are "restrictions on what you can do as a candidate for political office, that stems from trying to maintain political neutrality and not have the military involved in politics."
"The senator's staff was informed of the limits on what the military can do with respect to a political campaign and how we could support a senator's visit to Landstuhl and, quite frankly, I expected them to have the visit," Whitman said.
Watch him and his connections... he is a Bush Hack, and this Troops story with the Pentagon isn't the first time he has done something like this to the Obama campaign.
Last year, when Obama mentioned that the troops didn't have the armor they needed, it was this SAME spokesperson who went to the press and said that wasn't true. McCain jumped all over that shit like -- well a fly.
Whitman is a Plant... creating fake controversies... The same way his former boss did, Donald Rumsfeld...

Has McCain been reduced to naming places he's been that Obama hasn't? THAT will definitely bring in the votes!
Dean, at a rally in the parking lot of the state Democratic Party's offices in Midtown Atlanta, acknowledged that the national party had surrendered the South to the GOP, but the push this election was to have a presence in each of Georgia's 159 counties and to sign up voters. One speaker announced that 1,500 people had been registered Saturday in informal registration drives in Atlanta.
1,500 ain't bad - the local republicans have to be hatin' it!
1,500 ain't bad - the local republicans have to be hatin' it!
Obama has said GA is in play and I agree (despite what the national party thinks). There were a ton of new voters for the primaries (which Obama won), Obama got 700,000 votes in the primary (vs McCains and Hillary's 300,000), and Bob Barr is from GA. Between all the voters excited about Obama and all those Republicans nonplussed by McCain and eyeing Barr, we have a real contest here.
Good...Who here can name some of the Republican Strong hold states? ones that are sure to go red (discounting landslide of course)

Notice that this bill is unique in that the numbers on the back of the bill add up to its actual value (9 + 11=20). Get it? WOW! And it's being made available for a limited time only for its "face value" of $20US.
20 Liberian Dollars = a little more than 20 cents US.

I don't know if it is as simple as "true red" or even "solidly red" (or blue) - the list of states considered solidly red are states that have voted "red" in several elections. And THAT is where the list can be different from one source to another - how long have they been red and by how many votes?
In example - some have called New Mexico "solidy red" while other call us a toss-up, still others consider NM as a red leaning state.
So you will kinda have to decide which source and by what standard you mean "true red."
Comment bycapt on 07/28/2008 01:31:17
I think you can assume the solid red one here are considered solidly red, I don't know if any are outliers or unexpected. Some of the pink ones are going blue IMO
Most of the Southern States would fall into the solidly red category like South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky as well as a number of red states where anti-tax and anti-"big government" sentiment is strong such as Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and Nevada.
