Republican Psychoanalysis 101
Author: BobR    Date: 07/30/2008 12:21:56

I had an experience lately that got me thinking about right-wingers and why they think they way they do. As some of you may know, I have a second job at a pizza place. One of my coworkers is a right-winger, and we get along despite this obvious character flaw. I had shown her the letter to the editor I had gotten published regarding drilling for oil, and she tried to correct my "misperceptions". Next to it was a letter regarding Michael Weiner Savage, and she said "I love him". I said he was an asshole and she said "that's why I love him". I mentioned his comments on autistic children and she said "he's right - I have a friend that runs a day care center and she said...". There was some crosstalk (and I had to leave to make a delivery), but then she said "I don't believe in ADD either".

I was livid. It reminded me of a neighbor I used to have who was a staunch Republican who hated Mexicans, was pro-war, and put her dog's food dish down for 10 minutes every day. If he didn't eat, she'd pick up the dish and he'd have to wait until the next day to eat. I never got an explanation from her for this unnecessary authoritarian approach, but she simply proclaimed that she didn't "free feed".

Notice the word "free".

These types seem to come in various flavors with various pet fanaticisms, but the one trait they all seem to have in common is that they are angry that someone somewhere is getting something they didn't earn or don't deserve. They are angry that someone is "getting away with it", getting a free ride, not being properly punished for their behavior.

Imagine a Mexican person standing by the side of the road in the middle of a workday. The Republican will look and think "that lazy bastard, using our system for free healthcare and foodstamps, and my hard-working tax dollars paying for it!" (have you ever met a Republican that wasn't "hard-working"? ). The Democrat will look and think "that poor bastard - so far from home and can't find work. I wonder how he gets by?".

You could substitute "black" for "Mexican" and get nearly the same reaction. A white person would probably generate an entirely different reaction (sadly, for both the Republican AND the Democrat, but that's a different essay for another day).

Republicans seem to be against abortion because "someone is getting away with sex for fun" as much as for religious reasons. They're against taxes because some are being used to help out the "lazy welfare queens" (so naturally they're against Welfare and food stamps). They're for the death penalty and harsh sentences. They're for bombing anyone that criticizes the U.S. They're likely against gay sex because they know gays can have as much sex as they want and not have to worry about pregnancy. They're for school vouchers and NCLB because "bad schools" aren't getting properly punished for poor performance.

It seems to essentially come down to deep-seated anger and dissatisfaction. Neither of the women I mentioned seem "happy". I know other Republicans, and they too seem grumpy all the time, complaining about this or that. The only smiles I see are dripping with sarcasm and cynicism. There's a smirky smile when one of their targets (immigrants, arabs, liberals, or the unemployed) gets their "comeuppance".

Most liberals I know are angry with the state of affairs in the country, but are nonetheless relentlessly upbeat, understanding, and forgiving. They smile easily.

Republicans want to be the stern mother with the paddle in her hand, lording it over the kids and threatening them with a beating should they step out of line. Democrats want to be the loving mother that keeps the kids happy, thriving and thus behaving.

Perhaps it's all about how we were raised... and how some of us overcame it anyway.

Just a thought...

Excellent points BobR. Though I would say that "unhappy" or pissed off Republicans is a generalization. I certainly know some (Al From WV comes to mind) that seem content and happy. Maybe they have a certain thing we call: brains/smart.

Ya know, here's a subject that is rarely talked about. We would not have all these (black) welfare moms if we, as a Nation, had not screwed up Reconstruction! After the Civil War, we set all the slaves free........... with nothing. How did they think that was gonna turn out? Hmmm?

Comment by Shane-O on 07/30/2008 12:41:44
First - may I comment - yay! 4F is back!!!

BobR - your post is thought provoking. I agree with your observations - and might I add (or suggest) that while accurate, the broad portrayal does not apply to all Republican or all Democrats?

There are the outliers... the occasional happy Conservative and the sometimes depressing Liberal...

Morning

Hmmm - have to say, as Vel did, thought provoking opening this morning. Not sure about generalizing one side or the other. I don't think anyone is that cut and dried, I certianaly have my pissed off moments and I don't like to see people who break the rules get away with it. Suppose it's more a jealously issue, cause I know when I try to break the rules I usally get caught.

As for the person on the side of the road - usually my first thought it is "damn, hope they don't get hit"

Comment by Random on 07/30/2008 12:53:41
Hm...Interesting. Liberals are the L.A. Mothers trying to reason with a 5 year old brat, while Conservatives are New York Mothers threating to beat the 5 year old brat.

Neither which i particularly believe work.

Side Note, in proof of the Liberals laugh easier, look at the great stand-up comics, or the nice ones we see on TV. Most Comics tend to lean liberal in their views. You'd be very hard pressed to find a "good" conservative Comic. Also, Liberals are more willing to laugh at themselves. Who doesn't love a good Clinton BJ joke?

Another Side-Note: I also don't by into ADD.

Comment by Shane-O on 07/30/2008 13:02:10
I was thinking more about your post BobR - you spoke of individuals - Conservatives imposing structure on individuals and Liberals wanting more freedom.

Consider the flip side in the corporate context. To use a broad brush, the reverse seems to be the case: Liberals favor imposing restraints on corporations while Conservatives seem to like more freedom for corporations.

Just a thought...

Comment by BobR on 07/30/2008 13:07:12
thanks for the feedback. I know that generalizations are just that and not everyone fits the bill. I think the charactaristics, though, can be found in some form in most cases. I would consider Al to be more of an old-school conservative, not really a Republican.

As to the ADD - I think in a lot of cases it is borderline autism, but that's just my uninformed opinion (I'm not a doctor, but I DID stay at a Holiday Inn!)

Comment by velveeta jones on 07/30/2008 13:08:56
Off topic completely. I saw" X-Files: I want to Puke Believe" yesterday.

Here is Velveeta's quick review:

Do you like Action/Adventure films? Do you like Romantic comedies? Horror? Thrillers? Well, if you like any of these, then The X-Files is not the film to see! But if you like sitting in the dark, eating stale popcorn, rolling your eyes often and saying "Oh for shit's sake!" then X-Files movie is a winner.

Your first part dovetails nicely with the authoritarian nature of Republicans I was trying to illustrate. The latter part relates to selfishness -vs- selflessness that I didn't want to get into.

That still gets back to the contrasting responses. The Republican thinks the proper response is punishnent, and the Democrat thinks the proper response is channeling that energy into creative and learning opportunities.

Comment by TriSec on 07/30/2008 13:21:17
My take on Republicans?

The one thing that infuriates me is that they are absolutely right about everything. I have yet to meet one that even has the slightest conception that another opinion or point of view exists.

And god forbid that you have *actual* facts that contradicts something they've been told. They're so inflexible that they are completely incapable of conceiving that their information might be incorrect.

I was raised by a college administrator; I learned at an early age to take "facts" with a grain of salt and to always look for confirmation or alternatives...

Good morning! Good morning! Oh, I am so glad bloggie is back.

Some Randomâ„¢ thoughts that I wasn't able to share yesterday:

- Can we use our tax dollars to post signs every few yards, on the highway, that read "The Left Lane is for PASSING!!!! If you are not PASSING, move the F* over!"

- Using a re-usable coffee mug gets you strange looks at certain fast food joints.

- I am thinking of getting another tattoo; this time on my wrist.

- I am thinking of quitting smoking.

- What is the point of "Road to the White House" with David Gregory? Really? We need an hour every day for the next 4 months dedicated to the Presidential Race? Are there not other things going on?

You guys are definitely taking the right path, in my opinion. Does ADD exist? Of course it does. Sh*t, I have ADD, practically. The real discussion is about the overmedication of kids. We shouldn't be giving 7 year olds a "crutch." We should be giving them avenues, and creative education tools to harnass that energy and use it effectively. I love Thom Hartmann's 'Hunters and Gatherers' theory.

Program Director Rick Daniels tells The Hook newspaper: "Quite honestly, it came down to common decency. Although he was trying to make a bigger point, he didn't clarify it at all. We took into account our listeners and some feedback we've gotten, and we wanted to do what was best for our community." Savage continues to be heard on DC's WTNT and Baltimore's WCBM. It's so true Faye.

My Lady's Friend Mom used to be a Lobbyist for the American Dental Assoc.

I love Thom Hartmann's 'Hunters and Gatherers' theory.

....O.O no comment

Why, no comment?

Saying 'no comment' is sort of a passive way of saying that you disagree.

Maybe you should say what your comment is, or don't say anything.

Just sayin. . . .

I'd prefer to keep it to a no comment then in general spouting how i disagree "harnass that energy and use it effectively". That and i find it very hard to articulate my opinion on the subject.

That would be a great dream. Those always seem so vivid to me, then when I wake up I can see the image of what it was but I don't have to words for it. Or it's something crazy like - "wow - two sqirrels on a treadmill powering a windmill with light up New York!"

I personally think that each and every case is individual. I have seen children that need medication...I would say that ADD/ADHD is exaserbated by the pharmacuetical industry to a GREAT extent, but, there are definatly cases in some children where this is a very real situation and without medication, they are a danger to themselves.

It should be between a parent (s) and thier doctor, not the school system to decide.

Racoons can get very big. I had a cat that saved me from a 4 foot coon. A little black kitty stood between me and a coon on her hind legs and with her arms waving she told the racoon - RAWRAWRWAWAAA -

The coon took off, didn't want any of that cat stuff.

She was a great cat.

On ADD, I personally do not have the skill or expertise to second guess doctors and medical institutions.

When I was a kid they just called it hyperactivity and I can understand there really are chemical imbalances in individuals.

To make a blanket statement about other peoples children is not something I could defend - so I don't do it.

I don't get it, GA trooper.. Since when does personal responsibility mean people shouldn't help others in need?

There's something I learned at a very early age, both because there's clergy in my family and because I attended catechism. It is mentioned in several places in the Bible.

Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.

- Proverbs 24:29

Therefore all things, whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them;

- Matthew 7:12

....and as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

- Luke 6:31

These passages are known collectively as the Golden Rule. As much as I hope people would practice this as much as possible, we constantly find ourselves individually and collectively concerned more about our own interests than anyone elses.

The Republican definition of "personal responsibility" is the most aggregious example of ignoring this simple biblical teaching in the country today. And notice I didn't say conservative - because a true conservative would embrace such time-tested morals.

It was a relatively short, rolling earthquake, Liv, so it wasn't scary or anything. The ones with the big jolt and then the shaking will put your teeth on edge though. I think it would take a very special troll to rise to the level of civility, comity and comedy we have here.

There is a huge difference between someone who disagrees and wants to discuss and someone that is just disagreeable and wants to insult or belittle.

The people that would post that crud would never do so in a social context because they are obviously living in a fear based mindset. It is very rare to find one of them that will actually discuss and debate. Very rare indeed.

Who needs that kind of crud anyway? It is devolution by definition.

OK, Raine, I have regained my composure, swished some water to rinse the taste of troll bile out of my mouth, and I am here to give a little update on my first week as a new teacher.

You should all know that much of the past few days have been taken up with meetings, meeting, meetings; frankly they've been a little surprising. A few of the topics we've been covering.

*The Secular-Progressive Agenda and You

*Destroying Your Students' Parents' Marriages with Gay Marriage

*Abortion to 3 Years Old - Encourage It, People!

*Tricking Your Students Into Singing "The Internationale"

*Proper Starter Materials For Flag-Burning

*Lattes and Liberalism; Why They're So Darn Good Together

*Hating Bush (canceled due to full pre-seminar compliance)

OK, really it's mostly been about meeting SOL goals, student discipline, and where to park when you come in. It's been pretty exciting, though. Monday starts my first big year.

I wonder if the new McCain ad with Paris and Brit is a call to the racists?

Like Barack is coming for the white women. (standard scary black man meme)

"Is he ready" to take all the white women? You know his celebrity could get him some fine white POA. Look at all the white women in Germany ready to do him.

I think the message is obvious?

Maybe it's just me.

Barack Hits Back: Ad Says McCain Taking Low Road

"He's practicing the politics of the past: John McCain," reads the ad. "His attacks on Barack Obama: not true, false, baloney, the low road, baseless. John McCain same old politics same failed policies."

A picture of the presumptive Republican nominee shaking hands with the soon-to-be-departed president fills the screen.

"Barack Obama supports a $1,000 middle class tax cut, an energy plan that takes on oil companies, develops alternative fuels and breaks the grip of foreign oil."

The advertisement comes hours after the McCain camp caused a stir of its own when it put out a spot comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, both in terms of international celebrity and (more subtly) lack of substance. The Obama campaign and the Senator himself denounced the ad, but their rebuttal advertisement is a stronger repudiation. This spot, at once, positions the Senator as above the fray while tying McCain to the widely-unpopular tactics of the Bush years.

Aides to the Illinois Democrat said they did not know, at this time, how big the ad buy would be.

Video at the link!

Speaking of Republican Psychoanalysis 101, it seems that the Freepers are actually "Projecting" (to use the clinical terminology),

"In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them. The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud, and for this reason, it is sometimes referred to as "Freudian Projection"[1] [2]

The problem I have with charges of projection is that when someone accuses you of something and you accuse them of projection, is it at all possible that you're ACTUALLY guilty of the behavior and YOU are the one who is projecting?

I'm not suggesting that it is true in this case, but it's sort of like the old question "If you were insane, would you know it?"

Faye, what is wrong with your senator?

Mondo-babeeee :P

He nor his cohort are my senators. Where's that Steph drop when you need it ? The one that goes something like this: "Don't blame me, I didn't vote for 'em!" Although I did want to inquire when Tom Coburn tried to warn us about giant lesbians in schools - exactly where those schools are? Andrew Rice will give Inhofe a run for his money and if there is any justice in the world he will send Inhofe back to his warmer-than-usual farm in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma :D

Cheers,

mfaye

Faye, you might have not voted for them, but ya live in Oklahoma and they represent the state. I know it is ugly, I don't like admitting that Mel Martinez is one of my senators either.

Today is the 63rd anniversary of the sinking of the Indianapolis

Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo" and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us... he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.
