A Hate Campaign
Author: BobR    Date: 05/25/2016 14:49:33

The motto of Atlanta, GA is "the city too busy to hate". While that may not always play out in practice, at least they are making an effort to identify a problem and work towards changing it. America has never been a country too busy to hate, although we've made steps over the decades in the right general direction. Certain types of institutional bigotry have been tamped down (made illegal in some cases), although never eliminated.

One of the horrifying aspects of the T-Rump candidacy is how his blatant pandering to the xenophobes, homophobes, and assorted bigots has riled up and - in their minds - legitimized their poisoned point of view. We've seen it bubbling up at T-Rump rallies, with minorities being assaulted by rally attendees. It seems that in general life, the haters are feeling emboldened to let their freak flag fly.

Our friends in the LGBT community seem to be the target du jour, what with all this discussion of restroom policies. a TV reporter in Arkansas got a nasty email from a viewer blasting him for his "gayness":

The reporter responded in the best way possible - by reaffirming his worth and others who may be going through the same thing.

Target's Open Bathroom Door policy has the Christian Toilet Brigade crapping their pants in anger as they call for a boycott of Target in a cringe-worthy video ad:

The hatred infects the children, which is why it will take several more generations to fade away. In Idaho, white high school football players are charged with raping a disabled black teammate with a coat hanger:
When a teammate held out his arms after football practice in their high school locker-room, the boy thought he was about to get a hug.

Instead, he got viciously raped, authorities say.

As the teammate restrained the boy, another football player allegedly thrust a coat hanger into the boy’s rectum. Then a third teammate kicked the coat hanger several times, according to a criminal complaint.
[...]
According to the lawsuit, the alleged rape wasn’t a one-off but rather the culmination of months of racist abuse by white students against the boy, who is black.

The boy “was taunted and called racist names by other members of the team which names included ‘Kool-Aid’ ‘chicken eater’ ‘watermelon’ and [the N-word],” the suit alleges.

The articles states the town was "rocked" by the allegations. They are likely "rocked" that the kids picked up on the hate they heard from their parents and other adults and acted on it.

Even younger kids are picking up on their parent's bigotry. In New Haven, CT, junior high kids are accused of brutalizing a classmate for being Jewish:
Orit Avizov spoke to WTNH News8 last week about her 12-year-old son’s experiences at the school, including incidents where he allegedly was “physically attacked and verbally threatened” by other students because he is Jewish, according to the report.

Another student “slammed his head in the locker, he got him knocked down to the ground, he started kicking him and punching him in his stomach and his ribs,” Avizov told the TV station. “This child started yelling, ‘kill the Jew, kill the Jew, kill the Jew’ while he’s attacking my son,” she said.

This kind of social disease starts at the top - or at least is given free reign from the top. It's bad enough when FOX "News" or other outlets subtly promote fear and loathing of anyone who isn't White, Christian, and straight, but when it comes from a presidential candidate, it just turns up the volume. God forbid he make it to the White House - we know how that works when the highest office promotes the hate... we saw it in Germany 80 years ago.
