The Idiolympiad - aka: The Bush Olympic Legacy
Author: Raine    Date: 08/11/2008 12:21:17

The pResident will be leaving the Olympics today, presumably to head back to the United States of America. Am I glad? Yes.

The Olympics are not supposed to be political, but I know that in a world such as this, everything is to one extent or another. At least our pResident had the good sense to make jokes all along the way. While the Russia and Georgia further escalated their conflict, our president was competing in his own olympics... Race for the *ush Legacy. I present to you the bronze, Silver and Gold winning moments that will help to further seal the *Legacy* that GW *ush wishes to leave office with. (these are in no particular order. the judges can vote and the final tallies will be announced at the end of the *ush Idiolympiad of the year 2008.

You can see more photos of this softball visit here. It includes the *prank* the ladies played on him.

Caption it your self. These and many other fine photos of our pResident can be found at this photo gallery.

Exhibit Five: An amazing display of respect for our country and flag. It's 15 seconds... but says it all when he has to be the actual President instead of the frat boy he really is:

So there it is. Georgie Goes to China, while the world crumbles. I feel so much better now.
As an aside, it should be noted that the president visited the Woman's Beach Volleyball, Woman's Softball, Woman's Water Polo and a joint meeting with the Chinese and USA men's Baseball. Hmm... Interesting, huh?

It's Monday... So have a cup of joe and blog!
:peace: and
Raine

Mornin' everybody,

Raine - priceless shots of our fearful leader (sic). I spent the weekend trying to avoid the Olympics, but would catch them here and there - they are on so many freakin' channels including my old reliable MSNBC. On a more personal note, I've got to go back for another colonoscopy this Friday - ugh :(

Cheers,

mfaye

At least the only embarrassing thing Clinton did was get head. And lie about it.

*sigh*

Hawaii's an "elitist" state? Wonder if the people that are barely getting by on the islands know that.

Great blog Raine - he is just unbelievable. I keep thinking about the 1968 Olympic protests since it is the 40 year anniversary and I found this article by Jim Munn.

Abruptly cut from their U.S. relay teams and expelled from the Olympic Village, Smith and Carlos were then sent home, there to experience a bitter backlash -- years of death threats, character assassinations, attacks on their homes, difficulty in finding employment and other related hardships, not the least of which was the subsequent suicide of Carlos' first wife.

All but lost in the moment and the following decades was the fact that the gesture that had prompted such hateful reaction in so much of the dominant "white community" was anything but "subversive" or "racist." Instead, what Smith and Carlos had done was entirely American, like the Boston Tea Party, or those first shots fired by the Minutemen on the Lexington Green nearly 200 years earlier.

Smith and Carlos would later explain that they had walked shoeless to the podium on the afternoon of Oct. 16, 1968, to demonstrate to the world the impoverished condition that most blacks were still living under in America at the time.

As for the pair's bowed-head, arms-raised gesture? Neither a Black Panther salute nor an expression of hate, that particular posture -- a symbol of humility before God and hope for a more just future -- was fully representative of the religious and spiritual tradition in which both young men had been born and raised.

That is such a powerful moment... whenever I see that picture, I get goosebumps.

The compare and contrast is just, well sad.

Good morning Aunt A!

I thought you were just going to NY? If you take it as a carry on don't they just make you turn it on?

Actually come to think of it they didn't make me turn my celly on when I went through security at Dulles

Velveeta... that is what I am concerned about. I suppose I can procure a computer here and there if needed.

You know, anybody can get on a plane and make it to Hawaii.

I'll yield that Palm Beach or Wellington (or any one of a hundred other private, gated communities that politicians and CEOs favor) are "elitist".

Oh, and Belmont, MA...alleged home of Mitt Romney, by BMW's own research has the highest per-capita ownership of BMWs in the USA.

So who's elitist there?

Anyway...

I posted this last night when nobody was around, regarding our Olympic Bozo:

Comment by TriSec on 8/10/2008 9:5:17 PM

So, I turn on the Olympics expecting to see gymnastics, and I get the Idiot-in-chief???

However, this is the first time in about 5 years I haven't immediately changed the channel. I will yield the "president" thus:

George Bush talking about sports? That may be the one thing on earth that he has a clue about.

And he certainly does look calm and relaxed....living proof that "ignorance is bliss".

But, I digress.

Good morning all.

Busy morning for me. I have a 10:30 doctor's appointment.

In Exhibit Four, Bush does look like he's drunk (again).

Raine, they have only been going at the laptops for those crossing into the country. If you are flying domestically you will just have to take it out of the bag for when it goes through security. I took my laptop to Vegas and it was no issue.

Oh, and it's another suck-tacular day here in ol' New England.

Cloudy, gray, 66º and more rain all day.

What the hell happened to this summer? I thought we were getting global warming and everything was supposed to be all hot 'n stuff??

Seriously, it has been completely craptacular for months. I haven't checked on the Jet Stream, is there a shift on because of changed patterns, or El Nino or something?

Good morning, bloggers! I hope that everyone is doing well.

Great blog, Raine!! I have been avoiding the Olympics, but Bush's behavior is probably having several of the Founding Fathers spin in their graves.

By the way, the early edition of the UNN Daily Headlines are up.

Actually it is La Nina, if it ends in a it's usually feminine and if it ends in O, it's masculine.

it could have been a lot worse, politically.

I am doing well, but I have been insanely busy.

I have spent weeks trying to find something locally, and had two local interviews. One did not pan out, and I should hear about the other this week. I also went to a job fair, where a former classmate who is a math teacher said he knows three other math teachers who are struggling to find work as I have been.

So, I am proceeding with my plans to head out to Phoenix, as the market seems better there by all reports. (I have had a regular interview - did not pan out - and a screening interview so far, all before getting my teaching certificate which shold arrive soon.) I will likely leave around August 23rd or 24th and have a dog-friendly place to stay. (I can sub while I look for work - no worse than what I have been doing.) So, I figured I would check in while having some tea and working ont he Daily Headlines.

Comment by livingonli on 08/11/2008 14:10:53
Hi Will. It sounds like the Bush economy is messing even with teachers job prospects. And if you work in the media like I do, it seems like the job prospects are even more sucky. So I am stuck with crappy hours and crappy pay (for living in New York).

Comment by TriSec on 08/11/2008 14:16:59
Oop.

Well, I guess I'm in one of the few growth industries left....

As Jonathan famously remarked some months ago....we work in the most heavily regulated sector of the most heavily regulated industry in the most heavily regulated country in the world...

Or, to put it more succinctly (and to illustrate what's really wrong with the healthcare industry)....there are about two million payors in the United States.

Every single one of them has different rules. No provider can possibly deal with all that. (It's true, even Medicare is different state-to-state, and even county-to-county...)

Anyway...

I left journalism for information technology, as I could not find adequate work as a reporter. And information technology vanished. However, at least there is some growth in teaching in parts of the country, and I figured subbing here for a third year would be foolish.

Raine, it is stressful and exciting. Sometimes, when one thing does not work, you try another. That was part of the genius of FDR - he was willing to keep on trying to improve conditions in the country and was realistic enough to alter his plans based on the facts unlike the current resident of the White House.
