The Idiolympiad - aka: The Bush Olympic Legacy
Author: Raine    Date: 08/11/2008 12:21:17

The pResident will be leaving the Olympics today, presumably to head back to the United States of America. Am I glad? Yes.

The Olympics are not supposed to be political, but I know that in a world such as this, everything is to one extent or another. At least our pResident had the good sense to make jokes all along the way. While the Russia and Georgia further escalated their conflict, our president was competing in his own olympics... Race for the *ush Legacy. I present to you the bronze, Silver and Gold winning moments that will help to further seal the *Legacy* that GW *ush wishes to leave office with. (these are in no particular order. the judges can vote and the final tallies will be announced at the end of the *ush Idiolympiad of the year 2008.

Caption it your self. These and many other fine photos of our pResident can be found at this photo gallery.

Exhibit Five: An amazing display of respect for our country and flag. It's 15 seconds... but says it all when he has to be the actual President instead of the frat boy he really is:

So there it is. Georgie Goes to China, while the world crumbles. I feel so much better now.
As an aside, it should be noted that the president visited the Woman's Beach Volleyball, Woman's Softball, Woman's Water Polo and a joint meeting with the Chinese and USA men's Baseball. Hmm... Interesting, huh?

It's Monday... So have a cup of joe and blog!
:peace: and
Raine

Mornin' everybody,

Raine - priceless shots of our fearful leader (sic). I spent the weekend trying to avoid the Olympics, but would catch them here and there - they are on so many freakin' channels including my old reliable MSNBC. On a more personal note, I've got to go back for another colonoscopy this Friday - ugh :(

Cheers,

mfaye

Great blog Raine - he is just unbelievable. I keep thinking about the 1968 Olympic protests since it is the 40 year anniversary and I found this article by Jim Munn.

Abruptly cut from their U.S. relay teams and expelled from the Olympic Village, Smith and Carlos were then sent home, there to experience a bitter backlash -- years of death threats, character assassinations, attacks on their homes, difficulty in finding employment and other related hardships, not the least of which was the subsequent suicide of Carlos' first wife.

All but lost in the moment and the following decades was the fact that the gesture that had prompted such hateful reaction in so much of the dominant "white community" was anything but "subversive" or "racist." Instead, what Smith and Carlos had done was entirely American, like the Boston Tea Party, or those first shots fired by the Minutemen on the Lexington Green nearly 200 years earlier.

Smith and Carlos would later explain that they had walked shoeless to the podium on the afternoon of Oct. 16, 1968, to demonstrate to the world the impoverished condition that most blacks were still living under in America at the time.

As for the pair's bowed-head, arms-raised gesture? Neither a Black Panther salute nor an expression of hate, that particular posture -- a symbol of humility before God and hope for a more just future -- was fully representative of the religious and spiritual tradition in which both young men had been born and raised.

You know, anybody can get on a plane and make it to Hawaii.

I'll yield that Palm Beach or Wellington (or any one of a hundred other private, gated communities that politicians and CEOs favor) are "elitist".

Oh, and Belmont, MA...alleged home of Mitt Romney, by BMW's own research has the highest per-capita ownership of BMWs in the USA.

So who's elitist there?

Anyway...

I posted this last night when nobody was around, regarding our Olympic Bozo:

So, I turn on the Olympics expecting to see gymnastics, and I get the Idiot-in-chief???

However, this is the first time in about 5 years I haven't immediately changed the channel. I will yield the "president" thus:

George Bush talking about sports? That may be the one thing on earth that he has a clue about.

And he certainly does look calm and relaxed....living proof that "ignorance is bliss".

But, I digress.

I am doing well, but I have been insanely busy.

I have spent weeks trying to find something locally, and had two local interviews. One did not pan out, and I should hear about the other this week. I also went to a job fair, where a former classmate who is a math teacher said he knows three other math teachers who are struggling to find work as I have been.

So, I am proceeding with my plans to head out to Phoenix, as the market seems better there by all reports. (I have had a regular interview - did not pan out - and a screening interview so far, all before getting my teaching certificate which shold arrive soon.) I will likely leave around August 23rd or 24th and have a dog-friendly place to stay. (I can sub while I look for work - no worse than what I have been doing.) So, I figured I would check in while having some tea and working ont he Daily Headlines.

Oop.

Well, I guess I'm in one of the few growth industries left....

As Jonathan famously remarked some months ago....we work in the most heavily regulated sector of the most heavily regulated industry in the most heavily regulated country in the world...

Or, to put it more succinctly (and to illustrate what's really wrong with the healthcare industry)....there are about two million payors in the United States.

Every single one of them has different rules. No provider can possibly deal with all that. (It's true, even Medicare is different state-to-state, and even county-to-county...)

Anyway...

I left journalism for information technology, as I could not find adequate work as a reporter. And information technology vanished. However, at least there is some growth in teaching in parts of the country, and I figured subbing here for a third year would be foolish.

Raine, it is stressful and exciting. Sometimes, when one thing does not work, you try another. That was part of the genius of FDR - he was willing to keep on trying to improve conditions in the country and was realistic enough to alter his plans based on the facts unlike the current resident of the White House.

Yeah, like I commented yesterday, mostly because of the rotten weather keeping me from assembling our new outdoor furniture, yesterday was the first day this summer I was able to just lounge around outside. So much for making it two days in a row. Usually when we have craptacular summers it's because the ocean didn't warm enough during the spring, this is totally different.

I've got no comment for the pics of our Chimp-in-Chief. My understanding was that Dimwit was only attending the opening ceremonies.

From what I've read, the region in question is populated mostly by Russians, and is only part of Georgia due to a decision made by Stalin (a Georgian) to split the territory in two. (And back then, it hardly mattered, since both "republics" were just part of the USSR.) South Ossetia is in the effective control of ethnic Russian rebels who want Ossetia to be reunified as part of Russia. Georgia has been fighting these rebels, and that's what brought us to this point.

Russia's position is that it's not just going to sit back and watch its people be oppressed. Now, that position may not be totally honest (for one thing, they're almost certainly funding the rebels), but it's at least as defensible as Georgia's "mine mine mine" position regarding the territory.

From the Telegraph UK:

But American diplomats conceded that the US had few options and ruled out military intervention on behalf of Georgia. "We have no good options," a US National Security Council official told The Daily Telegraph. "We need Russia's co-operation over Iran and derailing that over a localised conflict in Georgia makes no sense. We just have to hope that diplomacy prevails. The next necessary step is for Russia to respond positively to Georgia's ceasefire declaration."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Mikheil Saakashvili, the president of Georgia, "must go". Mr Lavrov said Russia would continue its military action in South Ossetia due to the "continuing direct threat to Russian citizens".

It looks like Russia is taking Georgia back., and there isn't a damn thing the USA can do.

you know, it just occured to me... Exhibit Number 4... *ush's A-OK sign...

While the gesture is positive in some countries, in certain parts of middle and southern Europe (although not in Spain or Portugal) the gesture is considered offensive, as in "you are a zero" or "you are nothing". In some Mediterranean countries, as well as in Brazil, it represents vulgar expressions: either an insult ("you are an asshole"), or the slang for anus itself. By the same symbolism, it stands for marica (faggot) in several South American countries.

In Australia it simply means "okay".

In Germany it can either mean "okay" or "arsehole". The latter is mainly used by traffic participants, called the Autofahrergruß (drivers' salutation). Insulting police with this gesture can result in a fee of up to €750.

In American Sign Language it is the letter 'F', or the number '9', and when made with the thumb and forefinger parallel to the ground, means "asshole".

In Turkey and Venezuela, it is a very offensive gesture, regarded as a reference to homosexuality, and reflecting a wider than usual (due to anal sex) anus of a homosexual man

In most continental European countries, when the sign is placed over the nose, with the nose protruding through the 'O' made by the thumb and forefinger, it means "drunk".

In Japan it also means "zero" or "money".

I would not expect David Duke to be respectful any more than I would expect him to admit that a Jew, a Hispanic, or an African American are equally as American as someone whose ancestors came over on the Mayglower and mean it.

I am sorry, but having David Duke or the KKK on is kind of outside the bounds of regular political discourse. I forced myself to listen, while making boxes.

By the way, as an antidote to Duke's idiotic analysis of the causes of the Iraq War, I recommend the following by Greg Palast: Was The Invasion of Iraq a Jewish Conspiracy? The oil is in the ground to keep it off the market.

Also, if a follower of David Duke is whom you are fighting in the water cooler wars, maybe you need to find a better water cooler.

Did you see this? From DCRTV.

Bonneville To Kill 3WT, Expand WTOP & FNR - 8/11 - First on DCRTV. DCRTV hears that Bonneville will be killing off low-rated talker 3WT. And will use 3WT's old 107.7 Warrenton/Manassas signal to relay all-news WTOP, which will remain on DC's 103.5 and Frederick's 103.9 FM. With 3WT's old DC area 1500 AM and Frederick's 820 AM going to Federal News Radio, WFED, now on DC's low-ish powered 1050 AM. The Washington Nationals will continued to be heard on 3WT's old signals. The team is under contract to Bonneville through the 2009 season. "What this will mean for WTOP is a network of three FM stations covering an area literally from Richmond to Baltimore and from Chesapeake Bay to the Shenandoah Mountains," a local radio observer tells DCRTV. "It sets up WTOP to be an even bigger regional powerhouse than it already is." DCRTV also hears that the 3WT morning team, including David Burd, is gone. The last show was today. Starting Tuesday, 8/12, WTOP's morning show will air on 107.7 and WFED's morning show will air on 1500/820, with the syndicated talkers remaining on the former 3WT signals for several more weeks. Also gone from 3WT - weekend car show guy Pat Goss. Says Bonneville Senior Regional VP Joel Oxley: "With the coming change in administration, putting the station on a more powerful signal was the logical next step in the evolution of Federal News Radio, which serves the ever-growing and important federal community." The AM signal of 1500 is 50,000-watts and can be heard at night from Maine to Florida, and beyond. More soon.....

And the 820 signal did air Randi but DC got stuck with Glenn Beck. I wonder if Steph's show will move back to 1260 when the flip occurs.

Wow! I don't normally don the but I must say that Issac Hayes' death is suspicious, only because he was a member of a cult that kills people. Even FOX news thinks so!

Isaac was found dead by his treadmill, but conveniently missing from the wire stories was a significant fact: in January 2006, Isaac had a significant stroke. At the time, the word went out only that he had been hospitalized for exhaustion.

But the truth was, Isaac, whom I’d seen just a couple of months earlier when he headlined the Blues Ball in Memphis, was in trouble. Having lost the rights to his songs two decades earlier, he was finally making some money voicing the character of Chef on “South Park.” But “South Park” lampooned Scientology, so the leaders wanted Isaac out.

Push came to shove on Nov. 16, 2005, when “South Park” aired its hilarious “Trapped in the Closet” episode spoofing Tom Cruise and John Travolta. “South Park” creator Matt Stone told me later that Isaac had come to him in tears.

“He said he was under great pressure from Scientology, and if we didn’t stop poking at them, he’d have to leave," Stone said.

Very interesting read. Lets see if any one else picks up on this.

A trapdoor fee is something you didn't expect. Like say a late fee that bills on the due date of your credit card. No grace period for you! Or the constantly shrinking day your payment is due. Say 25 days, no 23 day or even 20 days after the monthly cycle date.

Yeah credit card love, love, love their fees!

My car wouldn't start because the battery needed another boost and I had to wait an hour and a half for AAA's person to arrive to jump my car. At least I scheduled an appointment for Thursday to get the battery replaced. Just hope my car holds out until then.

And as a result I was at work an hour and a half late but I did give the supervisor a head's up. I was this close to using a sick day.
