Abruptly cut from their U.S. relay teams and expelled from the Olympic Village, Smith and Carlos were then sent home, there to experience a bitter backlash -- years of death threats, character assassinations, attacks on their homes, difficulty in finding employment and other related hardships, not the least of which was the subsequent suicide of Carlos' first wife.
All but lost in the moment and the following decades was the fact that the gesture that had prompted such hateful reaction in so much of the dominant "white community" was anything but "subversive" or "racist." Instead, what Smith and Carlos had done was entirely American, like the Boston Tea Party, or those first shots fired by the Minutemen on the Lexington Green nearly 200 years earlier.
Smith and Carlos would later explain that they had walked shoeless to the podium on the afternoon of Oct. 16, 1968, to demonstrate to the world the impoverished condition that most blacks were still living under in America at the time.
As for the pair's bowed-head, arms-raised gesture? Neither a Black Panther salute nor an expression of hate, that particular posture -- a symbol of humility before God and hope for a more just future -- was fully representative of the religious and spiritual tradition in which both young men had been born and raised.

Great blog Raine - he is just unbelievable. I keep thinking about the 1968 Olympic protests since it is the 40 year anniversary and I found this article by Jim Munn.

So, I turn on the Olympics expecting to see gymnastics, and I get the Idiot-in-chief???
However, this is the first time in about 5 years I haven't immediately changed the channel. I will yield the "president" thus:
George Bush talking about sports? That may be the one thing on earth that he has a clue about.
And he certainly does look calm and relaxed....living proof that "ignorance is bliss".
But, I digress.

Seriously, it has been completely craptacular for months. I haven't checked on the Jet Stream, is there a shift on because of changed patterns, or El Nino or something?

Anyone know what specifically happened to start the whole Russia/Georgia thing?
From what I've read, the region in question is populated mostly by Russians, and is only part of Georgia due to a decision made by Stalin (a Georgian) to split the territory in two. (And back then, it hardly mattered, since both "republics" were just part of the USSR.) South Ossetia is in the effective control of ethnic Russian rebels who want Ossetia to be reunified as part of Russia. Georgia has been fighting these rebels, and that's what brought us to this point.
Russia's position is that it's not just going to sit back and watch its people be oppressed. Now, that position may not be totally honest (for one thing, they're almost certainly funding the rebels), but it's at least as defensible as Georgia's "mine mine mine" position regarding the territory.
But American diplomats conceded that the US had few options and ruled out military intervention on behalf of Georgia. "We have no good options," a US National Security Council official told The Daily Telegraph. "We need Russia's co-operation over Iran and derailing that over a localised conflict in Georgia makes no sense. We just have to hope that diplomacy prevails. The next necessary step is for Russia to respond positively to Georgia's ceasefire declaration."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Mikheil Saakashvili, the president of Georgia, "must go". Mr Lavrov said Russia would continue its military action in South Ossetia due to the "continuing direct threat to Russian citizens".

Bonneville To Kill 3WT, Expand WTOP & FNR - 8/11 - First on DCRTV. DCRTV hears that Bonneville will be killing off low-rated talker 3WT. And will use 3WT's old 107.7 Warrenton/Manassas signal to relay all-news WTOP, which will remain on DC's 103.5 and Frederick's 103.9 FM. With 3WT's old DC area 1500 AM and Frederick's 820 AM going to Federal News Radio, WFED, now on DC's low-ish powered 1050 AM. The Washington Nationals will continued to be heard on 3WT's old signals. The team is under contract to Bonneville through the 2009 season. "What this will mean for WTOP is a network of three FM stations covering an area literally from Richmond to Baltimore and from Chesapeake Bay to the Shenandoah Mountains," a local radio observer tells DCRTV. "It sets up WTOP to be an even bigger regional powerhouse than it already is." DCRTV also hears that the 3WT morning team, including David Burd, is gone. The last show was today. Starting Tuesday, 8/12, WTOP's morning show will air on 107.7 and WFED's morning show will air on 1500/820, with the syndicated talkers remaining on the former 3WT signals for several more weeks. Also gone from 3WT - weekend car show guy Pat Goss. Says Bonneville Senior Regional VP Joel Oxley: "With the coming change in administration, putting the station on a more powerful signal was the logical next step in the evolution of Federal News Radio, which serves the ever-growing and important federal community." The AM signal of 1500 is 50,000-watts and can be heard at night from Maine to Florida, and beyond. More soon.....

Isaac was found dead by his treadmill, but conveniently missing from the wire stories was a significant fact: in January 2006, Isaac had a significant stroke. At the time, the word went out only that he had been hospitalized for exhaustion.
But the truth was, Isaac, whom I’d seen just a couple of months earlier when he headlined the Blues Ball in Memphis, was in trouble. Having lost the rights to his songs two decades earlier, he was finally making some money voicing the character of Chef on “South Park.” But “South Park” lampooned Scientology, so the leaders wanted Isaac out.
Push came to shove on Nov. 16, 2005, when “South Park” aired its hilarious “Trapped in the Closet” episode spoofing Tom Cruise and John Travolta. “South Park” creator Matt Stone told me later that Isaac had come to him in tears.
“He said he was under great pressure from Scientology, and if we didn’t stop poking at them, he’d have to leave," Stone said.
