Welcome to the Republican World of Diminished Freedoms and Fewer Unions
Author: m-hadley    Date: 09/01/2008 11:04:44

Welcome to the Republican World (View)
Land of Diminished Freedoms and Fewer Unions (Happy Labor Day :P)

The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Well, well, well, as Hurricane Gustav heads toward the Gulf Coast the GOP has decided to cancel or at least severely scale back the first night of their convention so as to avoid the split screen shots of Republican revelry juxtaposed against a flooding New Orleans – thereby recalling for all of America the complete and utter failure of the Bush/Cheney/McCain administration to address the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. This move, hailed by many political pundits as an example of compassionate conservatism, is not entirely magnanimous. It has the added benefit of cutting out the scheduled appearances of both Bush and Cheney, whose approval ratings are somewhere around the mid-20s (Bush) and under 10% for Cheney. Nice perk to be able to attribute a beneficent reason for canceling an unwelcome appearance. But that is not the only news that is dribbling out of St.Paul, Minnesota. First reported by FourFreedoms own MNRN there have been numerous pre-emptive raids on homes where groups have gathered in advance of the Republican National Convention. No-knock raids that involved M-16s and battering rams, and that involved throwing residents on the floor, handcuffing them and in some cases arresting them on trumped up charges. Glenn Greenwald, who blogs over at Salon.com, has posted an entry on this devastating violation of the Fourth Amendment:

Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff's department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than "fire code violations," and early this morning, the Sheriff's department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.

As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue -- see this video of the police swarming a bus transporting members of Earth Justice, seizing the bus and leaving the group members stranded on the side of the highway -- it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that "the searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff's office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Watch a video of one of the raids at Feministing.com.

In this land of the free – it seems that these days the words that Janis Joplin sang are even truer today “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” (Bobby McGee, Kris Kristofferson).

In honor of Labor Day I give you this seeming non-sequitur, I give you a History of Labor Unions and Labor Law in America

And in your comments today I challenge you all to make the connections between the assault on freedoms in American today, the decreasing Union membership in this country, the eight years of Republican rule and the Hurricane that is approaching the Gulf Coast all wrapped up in a show of political theater that will take place in St. Paul, Minnesota this week under the guise of the GOP Convention. I can't wait to see what this crew comes up with - :D
Cheers,
mfaye

Just as anecdotal evidence of the world Republics view as our prime as a country. Prepare to be amazed and disturbed by what is the "prime" of our country, that the republicans love so much.

For the record, I personally think it's inconceivable that ANYONE would wish death and destruction on another human being.

"RALEIGH, N.C. — A former Democratic National Committee chairman has apologized for suggesting that Hurricane Gustav's expected arrival as Republicans prepare to open their national convention is a sign that God favours Democrats.

During a flight from Denver to South Carolina last Friday, Don Fowler - who was DNC chair in 1995 and 1996 - was recorded telling a fellow passenger that it appears Gustav will make landfall on Monday.

He said that just demonstrates that God is on the side of Democrats.

The person whom Fowler was talking to is not visible in the video, but was identified on the conservative Web site www.redstate.com as Representative John Spratt, a South Carolina Democrat.

Fowler told The Associated Press that he was making fun of comments made by the Rev. Jerry Falwell."

Last time I checked Don Fowler isn't a major Political Figure running for President.

And, he has apologized for his comment. He's not continuing to talk about, and run stories about what a "Great Opportunity" Gustav will be.

And, "The Truth?" Do you want the truth? The wRight doesn't want to do things differently this time. Sure, the mandatory evacuations will keep down the loss of life, so they won't have as much blood on their hands. But, they are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to give no bid contracts to their friends to continue "re-building" New Orleans into a bastion for wealthy tourists.

Anyone listening to Thom Hartmann? He is stating that the real reason the Republicans are ramping down convention activities is not Hurricane Gustav but that they are vetting Sarah Palin in light of the recent blogosphere revelations. Michael Moore has the DKos story on the prospect that the last child is Sarah's daughter and not Sarah's on the front page.

If it weren't a shotgun wedding, than she would "disappear" for a while or find a discreet place to terminate the child a la Peyton Place like back in the days when abortion was illegal.

Who wants to bet the only reason she's not gonna make her daughter's child her own (again) is because she knew she couldn't hide it from the entire country that she wasn't pregnant?

Oh we'd LOVE to have Gov Palin here to answer your questions, but you know we are doing whatever we can to help with the situation in LA. You know a levee is giving way.

I notice that Larry King's schedule does NOT mention that he's going to have any Democratic guests, unlike his coverage at the DNC where his entire show was a Rethug rebuttal.

Damn this Liberal Media.

I guess I have to worry about Barack Obama stealing my French Fries.

It looks like Larry Johnson wants to see the Bush policies under Grampy McSame while pretending to be anti-Republican.

Evening, folks.

I too turned on the Span for the RNC and got an Obama rally. Guess that's that.

Watching the wall-to-wall Gustav coverage on MSNBC now. Come on, even if the RNC was over at 6, weren't there any highlights at all?

Yes it is. When NBC bought out Universal, they acquired USA, Sci-Fi, Trio (now Sleuth) and NewsWorld International (which they then sold to Al Gore to become Current TV).

I received this e-mail;

ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ

Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman's crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.

Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0).

Democracy Now! stands by Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and condemns this action by Twin Cities law enforcement as a clear violation of the freedom of the press and the First Amendment rights of these journalists.

During the demonstration in which they were arrested law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force. Several dozen others were also arrested during this action.

Amy Goodman is one of the most well-known and well-respected journalists in the United States. She has received journalism's top honors for her reporting and has a distinguished reputation of bravery and courage. The arrest of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar is a transparent attempt to intimidate journalists from the nation's leading independent news outlet.

Democracy Now! is a nationally syndicated public TV and radio program that airs on over 700 radio and TV stations across the US and the globe.

Random, have you ever wondered (as I've dealt with crap like that about two times in the last two months) -- the person or people who thought up and took the time to write th code for that program -- they are obviously smart people - what if they used that intellect to write something constructive? Imagine what they could do...

Instead - they FUCK with us... grr!

I do have to give the guys credit, smart shit. Before i got rid of it, it destroyed my ability to change my desktop image.

I have respect for that kind of power.

That aside, if i find the asshole who made AntiViruse XP 2008 (The one i got, so people, watch it) I will take a bat to his knees.

The one my comp got on Friday, it disabled my Task Manager - so I couldn't shut the fucker down -- pre-empted as an "administrator" -- I got it by updating Spybot - it sent me to a "mirror" site - and I downloaded without checking the source carefully enough -- devious asses. But smart. What a waste of their time AND OURS! -- I feel your pain, Random.

>< Ouch. I'm just stuck with their weird window as a desktop image, and i think it was in the process of doing something to my task manager. I fear i may have to reboot XP anyway, which sucks. So I'll be spending my time getting files and shit onto my portable harddrive.

Grr! -- Tear it down, man -- rip it off like a band-aid. That's what external hard drives are for. If only Audition and my other audio editing software worked on Macs, I'd tell PC's to go "F" themselves.

Just to say...I'm a PC person. Course, I'm a gamer, and Games work better on PC over a Mac.
