Mavericks, My Ass!
Author: Shane-O    Date: 09/03/2008 07:50:38

mav·er·ickn.
1: an unbranded range animal; especially : a motherless calf
2: an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party

The word dates back to 1867 from the American pioneer Samuel A. Maverick (1803-1870) who did not brand his cattle.

Well, maybe the branding part of the McCain/Palin ticket does deserve the term maverick.

How many political ads for down ticket races in your area have you seen? And how many of the Republicans running actually admit to being Republicans?

Can’t say I blame them…

The complete absurdity of McCain’s maverick status has been well documented here, so I’ll not beat that horse. But let’s look at Governor Palin.

The Republicans claim that she is a maverick because she is a reformer against governmental waste. She hates earmarks. Really?

From The Anchorage Daily News:

In September, 2006, Palin showed up in Ketchikan on her gubernatorial campaign and said the bridge [to Nowhere] was essential for the town's prosperity.

She said she could feel the town's pain at being derided as a "nowhere" by prominent politicians, noting that her home town, Wasilla, had recently been insulted by the state Senate president, Ben Stevens.

"OK, you've got Valley trash standing here in the middle of nowhere," Palin said, according to an account in the Ketchikan Daily News. "I think we're going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project."

Palin flip-flopped on the project after her election, when the Bridge To Nowhere became the example of wasteful governmental spending.

So what about other earmarks? Governor Palin requested nearly $200 million in earmarks in a letter to Senator Ted Stevens. And that was just for the Fiscal Year 2009.

Governor Palin is under investigation for ethics violations involving her request to have her ex-brother-in-law fired from his job as an Alaska state trooper. Her attorney? Thomas Van Flein, an attorney employed by the State of Alaska. Just like Gonzales and Mukasey representing *resident Bush, not the American people.

Of course, there is the most important part – is she ready to step in to the presidency?

Ask Karl Rove:

Oh wait! Tim Kaine has a “D” after his name. I’m sure Rove thinks Palin is just dandy. Even though three years as governor of Virginia isn’t enough for Kaine, 19 months as governor of Alaska is? Mayor of a city of 200,123 is a joke to Rove, however being the mayor Wasilla, Alaska – population 8,471 is great!

Well, at least the Republicans are excited at their convention…

I’m with him!

Along those lines, a Steph TeeVee programming update – avoid the RNC and watch Planet Green Thursday night at 10 p.m. EST… Steph’s second taping on “Supper Club with Tom Bergeron.” Also, she’s scheduled to be on Larry King Live at midnight EST Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

Have a great day all!

First Day of School!

Javi is going into second grade today...at the brand-new Fitzgerald School!

The bus is coming in an hour....and then we've got the Principal's reception and coffee hour today.

It's also the last day of vacation for me...so I'm off to do something that would get me killed in the White Mountains....I'll be solo-hiking mighty Buck Hill (496 ft) in the Blue Hills with little more than a bottle of water and a cellphone...

Thanks for the heads-ups Shane-O. Now to convince the wife to relinquish both of the HDTiVo tuners Thursday (since it's the only one that can reliably record the digital tier channels). I don't want to avoid the RNC because you just can't write this kind of comedy, but I don't want to miss Mama either if I can avoid it.

Morning

When ever I hear someone say "Maverick" I look around for James Garner.

Excellent Post Shane-O,

I stuck with the Rethugs until Fred "I need a nap" Thompson, then I had turn the damn show off, lest I puke all over my futon. God, I hope this Palin nomination doesn't back fire on us Dems. :nervous:

Cheers,

mfaye

This 'puter is dragging its ass big time this morning. Don't know what's going on. CPU is maxed out, doing what I have no idea.

mfaye, I stuck it out to the "bitter" end last night. There's enough material to devote an entire RWW to each speech.

If you have a Windows machine, you can bring up Task Manager and click on the "Processes" tab. That will show you which process(es) is/are eating up all the CPU time.

Thanx but I did that already . It said half was going to HPBasic (which runs the test program) and half was the anti-virus (and that's what I don't understand). IE should be getting lotsa time because I have an internet cam running.

thing that made me turn off the teevee last nite (besides the fact that I felt awful) was everyong cheering when Karl Rove turned around to wave at the delegates from O'Lielly's skybox.

I have been in the Xcel. There is not a bad seat in the house, and yet, they can not fill it? I think there might be a few lobbyist parties goin on....

We watched it on the span... it was amzing how tired and bored people looked in the seats. Shane captured it perfectly in the blog. at 7 pm the place was not even half filled.

And don't even get me going on Joe Zelberman.

Will the media cover this the way they covered the Rev. Wright story?
Palin’s pastor, Larry Kroon, introduced Brickner on Aug. 17, according to a transcript of the sermon on the church’s website.

“He’s a leader of Jews for Jesus, a ministry that is out on the leading edge in a pressing, demanding area of witnessing and evangelism,” Kroon said.

Brickner then explained that Jesus and his disciples were themselves Jewish.

“The Jewish community, in particular, has a difficult time understanding this reality,” he said.

Brickner’s mission has drawn wide criticism from the organized Jewish community, and the Anti-Defamation League accused them in a report of “targeting Jews for conversion with subterfuge and deception.”

Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.

"Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. It's very real. When [Brickner's son] was in Jerusalem he was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment — you can't miss it."

Palin was in church that day, Kroon said, though he cautioned against attributing Brickner’s views to her.

If you are running a process that does a lot of file I/O (like continuously updating a log), the virus protection could be rescanning the file everytime it's updated. If you know you are doing that you can configure the VirusScan to not check that file type.

When has the last time John McCain has really been under scrutiny?

Oh sure, we've mentioned in passing that this may reflect his judgement, or lack thereof. But, the Corporate Media has spent most time this week talking about Palin's pregnant daughter. That's my point.

McCain, himself, seems to always be the secondary news story.

OK, but there shouldn't be a process doing that. It's possible a reboot may help things and I'll try that when I get a chance. The HPBasic program controls some intruments through GPIB (fairly slowly), while the webcam usually gives a fullspeed 20-30fps view of what I'm testing in the chamber. But now the frame rate is between 0 and 5.
