Mavericks, My Ass!
Author: Shane-O    Date: 09/03/2008 07:50:38

mav·er·ickn.
1: an unbranded range animal; especially : a motherless calf
2: an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party

The word dates back to 1867 from the American pioneer Samuel A. Maverick (1803-1870) who did not brand his cattle.

Well, maybe the branding part of the McCain/Palin ticket does deserve the term maverick.

How many political ads for down ticket races in your area have you seen? And how many of the Republicans running actually admit to being Republicans?

Can’t say I blame them…

The complete absurdity of McCain’s maverick status has been well documented here, so I’ll not beat that horse. But let’s look at Governor Palin.

The Republicans claim that she is a maverick because she is a reformer against governmental waste. She hates earmarks. Really?

From The Anchorage Daily News:

In September, 2006, Palin showed up in Ketchikan on her gubernatorial campaign and said the bridge [to Nowhere] was essential for the town's prosperity.

She said she could feel the town's pain at being derided as a "nowhere" by prominent politicians, noting that her home town, Wasilla, had recently been insulted by the state Senate president, Ben Stevens.

"OK, you've got Valley trash standing here in the middle of nowhere," Palin said, according to an account in the Ketchikan Daily News. "I think we're going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project."

Palin flip-flopped on the project after her election, when the Bridge To Nowhere became the example of wasteful governmental spending.

So what about other earmarks? Governor Palin requested nearly $200 million in earmarks in a letter to Senator Ted Stevens. And that was just for the Fiscal Year 2009.

Governor Palin is under investigation for ethics violations involving her request to have her ex-brother-in-law fired from his job as an Alaska state trooper. Her attorney? Thomas Van Flein, an attorney employed by the State of Alaska. Just like Gonzales and Mukasey representing *resident Bush, not the American people.

Of course, there is the most important part – is she ready to step in to the presidency?

Ask Karl Rove:

Oh wait! Tim Kaine has a “D” after his name. I’m sure Rove thinks Palin is just dandy. Even though three years as governor of Virginia isn’t enough for Kaine, 19 months as governor of Alaska is? Mayor of a city of 200,123 is a joke to Rove, however being the mayor Wasilla, Alaska – population 8,471 is great!

Well, at least the Republicans are excited at their convention…

I’m with him!

Along those lines, a Steph TeeVee programming update – avoid the RNC and watch Planet Green Thursday night at 10 p.m. EST… Steph’s second taping on “Supper Club with Tom Bergeron.” Also, she’s scheduled to be on Larry King Live at midnight EST Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

Have a great day all!

First Day of School!

Javi is going into second grade today...at the brand-new Fitzgerald School!

The bus is coming in an hour....and then we've got the Principal's reception and coffee hour today.

It's also the last day of vacation for me...so I'm off to do something that would get me killed in the White Mountains....I'll be solo-hiking mighty Buck Hill (496 ft) in the Blue Hills with little more than a bottle of water and a cellphone...

Thanks for the heads-ups Shane-O. Now to convince the wife to relinquish both of the HDTiVo tuners Thursday (since it's the only one that can reliably record the digital tier channels). I don't want to avoid the RNC because you just can't write this kind of comedy, but I don't want to miss Mama either if I can avoid it.

Excellent Post Shane-O,

I stuck with the Rethugs until Fred "I need a nap" Thompson, then I had turn the damn show off, lest I puke all over my futon. God, I hope this Palin nomination doesn't back fire on us Dems. :nervous:

Will the media cover this the way they covered the Rev. Wright story?
Palin’s pastor, Larry Kroon, introduced Brickner on Aug. 17, according to a transcript of the sermon on the church’s website.

“He’s a leader of Jews for Jesus, a ministry that is out on the leading edge in a pressing, demanding area of witnessing and evangelism,” Kroon said.

Brickner then explained that Jesus and his disciples were themselves Jewish.

“The Jewish community, in particular, has a difficult time understanding this reality,” he said.

Brickner’s mission has drawn wide criticism from the organized Jewish community, and the Anti-Defamation League accused them in a report of “targeting Jews for conversion with subterfuge and deception.”

Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.

"Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. It's very real. When [Brickner's son] was in Jerusalem he was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment — you can't miss it."

Palin was in church that day, Kroon said, though he cautioned against attributing Brickner’s views to her.

If you are running a process that does a lot of file I/O (like continuously updating a log), the virus protection could be rescanning the file everytime it's updated. If you know you are doing that you can configure the VirusScan to not check that file type.

When has the last time John McCain has really been under scrutiny?

Oh sure, we've mentioned in passing that this may reflect his judgement, or lack thereof. But, the Corporate Media has spent most time this week talking about Palin's pregnant daughter. That's my point.

McCain, himself, seems to always be the secondary news story.

OK, but there shouldn't be a process doing that. It's possible a reboot may help things and I'll try that when I get a chance. The HPBasic program controls some intruments through GPIB (fairly slowly), while the webcam usually gives a fullspeed 20-30fps view of what I'm testing in the chamber. But now the frame rate is between 0 and 5.

It may be the file that's caching the webcam that's getting scanned every time.

It has its moments, it will probably get to the point where something will freeze. I'll just use lunchtime as an excuse to reboot and see what happens. As long as they're working well enough. Most of these PCs are getting replaced with new ones anyway because we have to go from Win2K to XP.

I am SO tired of that media meme.

According to the Republicans - why is the economy in the tank? -- not inflation, the weak dollar, the price of energy, foreclosure rates -- no -- it's the media that talks down the economy (whiners).

Why is Bush unpopular (less popular than "The Clap")? - not because of his ideas, policies, wars. It's "Bush Derangement Syndrome" -- is that in the DSM IV? --

And so now, why will the Republicans lose the Nov. election? Not because Obama is a great leader with popular ideas - it's because the media is "in the tank" for Dems.

Republicans are so in favor of "personal responsibility." Except their own. Nothing is their fault. Blame, blame, blame. Blame the media.

As for the speech itself, Davis said a generic, "masculine" speech was being prepared before the pick was made and, now that Palin is the choice, she is adapting the speech to her own needs and personality.

Just as a wacky aside, Palin does NOT control the Alaska National Guard. All National Guard units report to POTUS & Congress, not to governors. They can ask for units in case of emergency, but they have no authority to command. At least, that is my current understanding.

Palin is in charge of the ASDF (Alaska State Defense Force.) It is considered a supplemental police force:

"MISSION:

The mission of the Alaska State Defense Force is to maintain an organized, trained military force, capable of timely and effective response to state emergencies, or, on other occasions deemed appropriate by the Governor, to provide military assistance to civil and military authorities in the preservation of life, property, and public safety."

Thank goodness, the ASDF 1st Battalion is located in -- you guessed it -- Wasilla.

Oh, and another tidbit of trivia:

There are approximately 254 ASDF soldiers and officers statewide.

Oooooo, Big Commander Lady! You make me all SCARED!

One tidbit:

"Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6

years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over

33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the

City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation

(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a

regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she

promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they

benefited residents."

Mmmm, yummy stuff...

Ah hell, I'm just gonna jump right in...

What the hell was Mitt Romney talking about? It hasn’t been “liberals” who have been in charge for the last eight years. It hasn’t been liberals who have raised the national debt, spending money like drunken sailors. George W. Bush & Dick Cheney are certainly no liberals. It wasn’t liberals who bowed down to special interests at the expense of the people. Liberals are not the party that gave tax breaks to the richest 1% of the population, while screwing the other 99%. Liberals are not to blame for the debacle that is Iraq, nor was it liberals who have ignored all the environmental laws and allowed our world to get dirtier and dirtier. Liberals were not the ones behind giving medical care over to health insurance and pharmaceutical companies so that even if a family has insurance – they still may be overwhelmed by medical bills, get behind in payments, and lose their house or their job (and thereby losing what little health insurance they had). Liberals didn’t enshrine oil and gas companies and the huge, growing world of privatization to enrich themselves and their country club cronies with millions and millions (in some cases even billions) of dollars (Allow me to name just of few of the corporations and their boards and CEOs that were greatly enriched during the reign of Bush/Cheney: Kellogg, Brown & Root, Halliburton, ExxonMobile, BP, Chevron, Shell, Smith Barney, Citigroup, Enron, and the bail out of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). Liberals generally did not support the passage of FISA or the strong expansion of surveillance powers by the executive branch of government.

None of these are problems created by liberals, they are all the legacy of the GOP, the party that has been in charge for the past eight years, the party that it is time to retire in November.

That's it on Romney - I've already got something on Huck as in "Shut the Huck up!!!"

Cheers,

mfaye

Here's my take on Rev. Huckleberry:

Don’t get me going on Huckabee (Shut the Huck up!!!) What the hell is his point – wait, don’t tell me, McCain = Good, Obama = Bad. Couldn’t he be a skosh more creative? Poor boy from Hope, AR – don’t give me that tired old sob story…John McSame can’t even raise his arms to his shoulders – boo hoo, what about the guys who don’t have any arms or any legs? Or didn’t make it home at all? What about the one million plus Iraqis that we have killed? What about all of the folks who will never ever see their homes again, who are living as refugees in a foreign land? What about all those values? Those match some of OUR Values...

Imagine it... You have a four month old, and your friend calls you up and says I have Pearl Jam Tickets... and you say SURE!

Don't you think someone would wonder why you have a baby ... at a Convention?

This is really really bad for that little boys ears... and emotional well being. you simply do not bring an infant to a loud hall.
