Country First? Why is that familiar?
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/04/2008 10:45:16

Good Morning!

Have you been keeping up with our friends in Minneapolis? There's been a lot of interesting things happening up there in the Twin Cities.

I believe I have seen a whopping two persons of color on the convention floor....Mondo has observed the automated nature of the applause from the delegates, but "their eyes are empty" as if responding by rote, without any passion or conviction.

I'm impressed by the number of hand-painted signs; I don't know if this is the norm for the convention, but I don't recall seeing that at the DNC in Denver...it really makes this convention look like a bunch of low-budget amateurs.

And nevermind that "deer in the headlights" speech from Governor Palin last night....I don't recall ever hearing such a disjointed and unprofessional speech from a major candidate. And they speak of Obama's lack of experience...

But the thing that I have noticed the most is all of those "Country First" signs. I'm finding it vaguely unsettling. Much has been made about Obama giving a speech in a stadium to cap the convention, and of course comparisons were made to certain rallies that took place in Europe in the 1930s. But isn't sacrificing everything on the altar of the state one of the hallmarks of fascism? I know we're all familiar with it, but a brief review of the 14 characteristics of Fascism is in order. How much of this have we seen so far this week?

-Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

-Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

-Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

-Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

-Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

-Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

But that's not what motivated me to check the history books. Sometimes being a WWII geek has it's uses; today is one of those times. After Germany invaded Poland, and the major powers declared war, the United States chose to sit on the sidelines. During 1940 and most of 1941, the so-called "Great Debate" took place over whether or not the US should become involved. Complicating matters was FDR's campaign for the presidency, which was for an unprecedented 3rd term. Many saw him as a warmonger desperate to drive the US to war; others were looking for the slightest excuse to get the US involved.

It's not like there wasn't opportunity; after the Atlantic Charter in 1941, US Destroyers began escorting ships bound for England, and U-Boats began hunting them. Of course we all know Pearl Harbor ended the debate once and for all.

But at last that brings me to the history I was searching for....for there was an antiwar group called the America First Committee. They too thought the United States should come first, but for different reasons. Their charter was remarkably brief, to whit:

-The United States must build an impregnable defense for America.
-No foreign power, nor group of powers, can successfully attack a prepared America.
-American democracy can be preserved only by keeping out of the European war.
-"Aid short of war" weakens national defense at home and threatens to involve America in war abroad.

Alas....the group turned out to be anti-semitic, but that's a blog entry for another day.

The funny thing is, the America First Committe lives on today. The name was resurrected in 2002 as an isolationist third party. They're tiny; balloting in only two states (MA and FL), but they do have an interesting platform.

Smaller federal government

The party seeks to eliminate several Cabinet departments within the Executive branch of the U.S. federal government, such as the departments of Housing and Urban Development and Education. The party also seeks to eliminate all federal funding for schools, believing that federal government money has led to more federal control over schools -- control, the party believes, that should rest in the hands of local governments.

Church/State issues

The party opposes the idea that the Constitution bars expressions of religious faith in the public square. It seeks to overturn all bans on organized prayer in public places, especially in public schools, as well as bans on displays of religious icons (such as tablets of the Ten Commandments)

I've got to hand it to the GOP leadership, as once again they've taken a theme or an idea that they like the sound of, without checking to see if somebody else might be using the name, or if it has any historical implications.

Mornin' Mala , Tri and Scoop,

Frustration Nation over at the Live blog - I keep getting bounced out before I can even post, or I get some strange message like "you are posting too quickly, slow down."

It may take me awhile to recover after last night's litany of lies. Who knew that Sarah Palin was such a beee-och?

Cheers,

mfaye

:peace: &

Good morning everyone.

Took me this long to figure out who Mala was. Hi there! You will note on many things I am extremely slow on the take.

Hi TriSec, mfaye & scoop.

Yeah, the liveblog is major frelled up today. It's like they have to think of new types of errors - quasi-logged in - posting too fast - changing the order of posts.

So if the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick, does that mean that Gov. Palin thinks hockey moms are violent, untrainable, and piddle all over the landscape?

Actually I finally figured it out when I got on ProducerChris' friends list and I made a few comments on the pics and something in this loopy head clicked.

Hah, I'm so far behind I'm listening to yesterday's SMS. I'm not sure how much I should claim for coming up with Milfy McMooseburger (the McMooseburger was already there and I just tacked on Milfy). I'm sorta anonymously famous

That said, the cover IS real...

And the speaches were hate filled last nite.

Good morning all.

Since we had to wait on a US Open match for MSG, NY I didn't get out of work until 3 AM last night and since the Southern State Pkwy. was closed for road construction, I didn't get home until almost 4 AM.

Raine, I hope that cover is for real.

Morning folks... :coffee:

I was also noticing all the "Country First" signs, wondering "what the hell are they trying to say?... do they even know?" Do they even know how ironic that is coming from the party that has led the most self-serving selfish regime the last 8 years?

They say they claim McCain is a "maverick" for reaching across the aisle, yet all of the speeches last night were filled with lies and insinuations attacking the Democrats?

They say they want "reform", yet Palin has a record as dirty as the worst of any Republican?

You'll be able to tell how stupid a person is by the "McCain/Palin" sticker on their car. It means they bought this load of manure.

Comment by livingonli on 09/04/2008 13:39:23
If I was home tonight, the Giant game would be first choice for viewing for me. I'll let Mike Malloy yell at the TV.

They lost the feed from Minneapolis. That's why you heard dead air, Jim go "Uh oh" and then they rolled bumper music. Either they roll a best-of piece or Jim flies solo if they don't get Momma and Chris back.

Comment by TriSec on 09/04/2008 13:55:04
On the Canal Zone...

Almost from the inception of the Canal Zone, questions arose as to whether the Zone was considered part of the United States for constitutional purposes, or, in the phrase of the day, whether the Constitution followed the flag. On July 28, 1904, Controller of the Treasury Robert Tracewell stated, "While the general spirit and purpose of the Constitution is applicable to the zone, that domain is not a part of the United States within the full meaning of the Constitution and laws of the country.[4]

In 1953, Congress passed legislation to specify the status of Americans born in the Canal Zone--and to exclude non-Americans born there from citizenship. Title 8, Section 1403 of the United States Code grants citizenship to those born in the Canal Zone with at least one parent who is a United States citizen. This differs from the provision in the Fourteenth Amendment which grants citizenship to all born in the United States, regardless of parental nationality.

Tri! Great Blog entry.

I watched last night, against my better judgement. But, "know thine enemy." RIght? I had expected I would guffaw a couple of times and roll my eyes on more than one ridiculous point. What I did not expect was how angry I would get watching this snarky, pathetic PROM QUEEN trying to wear her big girl pants and tell lie after lie, followed with snide comment after snide comment.

Her speech gave me the same burn in my stomach as George Bush's "Nope, not over here! Those weapons have gotta be here somewhere..." joke.

I cannot believe THIS woman thinks she deserves to be 1 heartbeat away from being the leader of America. What a f*ckin' joke! And, oddly I'm not laughing.

This is what we need to keep doing.

I can't count how many times I yelled "That's a LIE!" while watching this.

I was a little disappointed by Rachel. I was hoping she would skewer the lies in that speech. But, it's hard to give a well thought out retort when Tweety keeps interrupting.

All of the other pundits calling this a great speech? Seriously?

Keith was most accurate in saying it was on par with Reese Witherspoon in Election.

The only amusing thing about her is that her voice is a cross between Marge Gunderson and Mia Sorvino.

There is just so much about her speech....soooo much.....

That woman made my blood boil.

When she said she took on the *good Ol Boys* in alaska, and now she is partnering with the good ol boys in DC, all I knew was that she has never seen the likes of Joe Biden... and since she said she isn't afraid to play with the big dogs, She lost any of the argument that she is being treated badly becuase she is a woman.

Tough shit Sarah. you ain't seen nothing yet.

Seriously, Aunt Azalea could not sleep last night. Even Jon Stewert couldn't calm her down. I offered to give her the Sunday blog to rant. And even if she "Goes Harlem" on her (as I call it) I can add the definitions for us "regular" people.

Comment by Scoopster on 09/04/2008 20:19:40
I'm heading home for the evening, but I'll leave you with these words:

You wouldn't know that this is such a critical election by watching the convention last night. I know we had our week. And the Republicans deserve theirs. But it's been amazing for me to watch over the last two nights. If you sit there, and you watch it. You're hearing a lot about John McCain, and he's got a compelling biography as a P.O.W.

You're hearing an awful lot about me. Much of which is not true.

What you're not hearing is a lot about you.

You haven't heard one word about how they're going to make the health system work - so that when a union is negotiating with a company it's not all just a discussion about higher premiums and you guys can actually start talking about higher wages and benefits.

You haven't heard one word about how we're gonna create more apprenticeship programs like the ones we have here. Or give other people a chance to train in new trades.

You haven't heard one word about getting serious about green and alternative energy. The kind of work that is resulting in all the expansion and hiring here.

You haven't heard one word about how we're going to strengthen unions so that working people get a decent stake.

You haven't heard one word about how we're going to improve math and science education so that we can hire more engineers to create more products in green technology.

You haven't heard one word about how we're going to deal with any aspect of the economy that is affecting you and your pocket day to day.

Haven't heard one word about it. Literally. Two nights. They have not said a word about it. They have not said a word about it. They've had a lot to say about me. But they haven't had anything to say about you.

And the thing that I'm insisting on in this election is that we can't keep playing the same political games we always play.

Sen. Barack Obama, York PA, September 4, 2008

That so pissed me off last night. All I can say is Faith based initiatives... Isn't that COMMUNITY ORGANIZING???

I despise these people.

Comment by Raine on 09/04/2008 21:53:24
Now that is what I am talking about:

Sen. Barack Obama ditched his normal languid cool today, punching back at Gov. Sarah Palin as he spoke with reporters in York, Pa, hotly defending his work as a community organizer. He said he assumes Palin "wants to be treated same way guys want to be treated, which means their records are under scrutinty. I've been through this for 19 months. She's been through it, what four days?"

Obama's hackles were clearly raised by Palin's dismissal of his community organizing --a response to his earlier dismissal of her record as a small-town mayor. "Why would that kind of work be ridiculed?" Obama said. "Who are they fighting for?" The idea that community organizing is not relevant to the presidency, he said, just shows why Republicans "are out of touch and don't get it."[/quote

Bite me sarah Palin.

In today's LA Times, stalwart feminist Gloria Steinem defines the boundaries of what a feminsit makes.... And yes, we have boundries...

Palin reminds me of Phyllis Schlafly [WIKI=Phyllis_Schlafly]See her Wiki entry... [/WIKI]when she opposed the ERA.

From the LA Times:

Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the "white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.

But here is even better news: It won't work. This isn't the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."....

So let's be clear: The culprit is John McCain. He may have chosen Palin out of change-envy, or a belief that women can't tell the difference between form and content, but the main motive was to please right-wing ideologues; the same ones who nixed anyone who is now or ever has been a supporter of reproductive freedom. If that were not the case, McCain could have chosen a woman who knows what a vice president does and who has thought about Iraq; someone like Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. McCain could have taken a baby step away from right-wing patriarchs who determine his actions, right down to opposing the Violence Against Women Act.

Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

======================================================

Sarah is NOT a feminist. she does not represent Women's equality. Not by a long shot.

And if they use the word "maverick" to describe her any more times, I may have to throw something at the TV.

I am wondering if anyone anywhere has actually counted...

I don't think the hotel would appreciate that just like I wouldn't want to ruin my HDTV. The only good convention viewing it got was the last night of the Democratic Convention which was worth watching in HD.

It's awful!
