Pitbull or Showdog?
Author: Raine    Date: 09/08/2008 12:30:49

Good Morning. I want to thank everyone for filling in while we were on vacation.

Last week was Sarah Palin week. Understandably so. A surprising and questionable decision for McCain. He wanted to show what a Maverick he is. He wanted to show that He could shake things up. He wanted to show that he is not part of the Washington Elite... He wanted a lot of things. I think the world is finding out a lot of things about Sarah. That is good. Right?

But I would like to get back to McCain for a moment. Let's not forget that he is the one voters elected. Not one person in America cast a vote in the primaries for Sarah Palin. Not one. She put no cracks in any ceiling as the McCain campaign would have you believe.

Republicans are crying Sexism at the very thought to question her choices. I never had a chance to choose to vote for her, nor have I had a chance to learn any more about her than the innuendo I hear around coffee shops, the internet and the radio. I am a woman who likes to make a well educated choice. I will be honest with you, I probably wouldn't vote for McCain anyway, no matter who was on the ticket, but the idea - the true idea - is to be well informed of your choices. That isn't sexist, that is being pragmatic. And truthfully, if John MCCain wants to claim that his running mate is being treated with a sexist bias, perhaps he himself should take a look at how he is treating Sarah Palin Himself.

Rick Davis, campaign manager for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just told Fox News Channel's Chris Wallace that McCain running mate Gov. Sarah Palin won't subject herself to any tough questions from reporters "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference."

Davis assailed the way the media had discussed Palin and her family in the last week and said the campaign would wait until a less hostile media environment.
So Apparently, Sarah Palin is too fragile a woman to handle questions from the mean media? Are we supposed to believe that THIS isn't a sexist thing to do? They are keeping the little lady in the back room until the *Big Boys* she so fondly called them are ready to 'let her come out and play'? She claims to be able to run with the big boys, and THIS is what we get? She hasn't answered one friggin' question from anyone, except US Weekly and People Magazine. (both which should be on newsstands any day) If that isn't sexism, I don't know what is. They have subjugated Sarah Palin because they don't think she is strong enough to handle the media.

This campaign and this republican party suddenly are acting as tho they have the corner on feminism and they chose to show it by keeping their VP candidate - one who I haven't had a choice to get to know - in a back room until they are ready to parade her out.

I thought she was a pit bull, not a show dog.

Sarah Palin is not feminist. Sarah Palin is being treated by john McCain the same way he seems to treat all woman, with contempt. John McCain and Sarah Palin are no mavericks.

I urge you to remember that when it comes to Choice, John McCain doesn't want you to have one. It is illustrated very clearly by how he is treating Sarah Palin, and Sarah? She has no problem being told what to do by the big boys. While the Republicans try to tell you that they are the new party of Feminism, Choice and Change, I urge you to remember and remind people...

The Democrats have been the ones to fight for a woman's right to choose.
The Democrats have been the ones to fight for better health care.
The Democrats have been the ones for better education.
The Democrats have been the ones to help families have a step up in life.
The Democrats have been the ones to fight for civil rights.

The list goes on, but remember all of the things that Democrats have been standing for for decades are not anything CLOSE to creating people like John McCain and Sarah Palin. Don't let the Republicans try to propagate the notion that they are about choice just because they picked a female VP. Women in this country are still a majority, not John McCain and whatsername or any of the Republican party. John McCain is the one running to take away your right to choose. Sarah is just along for the ride, cause well... She is a pretty little pit bull you know.

And yes, THAT was what sexism looks like. Questioning whether or not her daughter REALLY had a choice is not. Questioning her son's motives for joining the military is not. Questioning her choices in literature is not. Questioning her budgetary discretion is not. Questioning her human resource capabilities is not.

But that won't happen until everyone starts being nice to the little lady. That is what Grampa said, and after all, He is the one running for president. Don't forget that. They are using a woman to distract us from the real and serious issues of the day, by putting lipstick on a ... well you get the idea.

:peace: and
Raine

Glad our travelers are home safe!

If McPalin won't talk to the media until they "give her some respect" how is she going to deal with countries that don't believe women to be worth the time of day?

For those that Missed it, Frank Rich had an amazing (once again) peice in yesterdays NYT:

[...]

The Times had it right. The McCain campaign’s claims of a “full vetting process” for Palin were as much a lie as the biographical details they’ve invented for her. There was no F.B.I. background check. The Times found no evidence that a McCain representative spoke to anyone in the State Legislature or business community. Nor did anyone talk to the fired state public safety commissioner at the center of the Palin ethics investigation. No McCain researcher even bothered to consult the relevant back issues of the Wasilla paper. Apparently when McCain said in June that his vice presidential vetting process was basically “a Google,” he wasn’t joking.

This is a roll of the dice beyond even Bill Clinton’s imagination. “Often my haste is a mistake,” McCain conceded in his 2002 memoir, “but I live with the consequences without complaint.” Well, maybe it’s fine if he wants to live with the consequences, but what about his country? Should the unexamined Palin prove unfit to serve at the pinnacle of American power, it will be too late for the rest of us to complain.

We’ve already seen where such visceral decision-making by McCain can lead. In October 2001, he speculated that Saddam Hussein might have been behind the anthrax attacks in America. That same month he out-Cheneyed Cheney in his repeated public insistence that Iraq had a role in 9/11 — even after both American and foreign intelligence services found that unlikely. He was similarly rash in his reading of the supposed evidence of Saddam’s W.M.D. and in his estimate of the number of troops needed to occupy Iraq. (McCain told MSNBC in late 2001 that we could do with fewer than 100,000.) It wasn’t until months after “Mission Accomplished” that he called for more American forces to be tossed into the bloodbath. The whole fiasco might have been prevented had he listened to those like Gen. Eric Shinseki who faulted the Rumsfeld war plan from the start.

In other words, McCain’s hasty vetting of Palin was all too reminiscent of his grave dereliction of due diligence on the war. He has been no less hasty in implying that we might somehow ride to the military rescue of Georgia (“Today, we are all Georgians”) or in reaffirming as late as December 2007 that the crumbling anti-democratic regime of Pervez Musharraf deserved “the benefit of the doubt” even as it was enabling the resurgence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda. McCain’s blanket endorsement of Bush administration policy in Pakistan could have consequences for years to come.

“This election is not about issues” so much as the candidates’ images, said the McCain campaign manager, Davis, in one of the season’s most notable pronouncements.[...]

It's my understanding that Palin is going to do a sit down with Charlie Gibson "at the end of this week." i.e. 9/11, 9/12 - right after her son is deployed - so not only does ABC need to thread the needle on the sexism "meanie" charges, but they have to be courteous to her as her son goes to Iraq. Building the "Chinese Wall" up for the interview.

I'd hope that after the pandering, Charlie will ask her about her views on the Freddie and Fannie bailouts. Also, if she were VP right now, would she advise McCain to send aid to Cuba in the wake of hurricane Ike (as they have asked for and Bush has refused)?

Charlie Gibson... the only reporter who promised to be nice?

I won't be holding my breath about Charlie Gibson. Sorry for the cynicism, but After reading the news that KO and Chris Matthews are no longer going to be doing the News at the debates for MSNBC, after the McCain campaign complained... I am so jaded. From the NYT...

MSNBC tried a bold experiment this year by putting two politically incendiary hosts, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, in the anchor chair to lead the cable news channel’s coverage of the election.

That experiment appears to be over.

After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.

The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.

[...]

The McCain campaign has filed letters of complaint to the news division about its coverage and openly tied MSNBC to it. Tension between the network and the campaign hit an apex the day Mr. McCain announced Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. MSNBC had reported Friday morning that Ms. Palin’s plane was enroute to the announcement and she was likely the pick. But McCain campaign officials warned the network off, with one official going so far as to say that all of the candidates on the short list were on their way — which MSNBC then reported.

Funny, No one ever makes a stink when news moves to the right...

You know Gibson won't do that. While he is a genial man, I find he too is in the right wing tool category. I have seen him "interview" O'Lielly numberous times throwing him so many lightweight questions I had to wonder if it was a T-Ball interview.

As for Palin's son being deployed, while I hope that he is safe as all our other men and women in harms way are, my mom wondered aloud why she thinks she's so special with this deployment. What about all the others - were their deplopyments not special too?

Well, their job is clearly to make a profit - and how do they do that? - By entertaining - certainly not by informing. Who's left to actually get information to an uniformed public? - the campaigns certainly won't. Blogs? They reach only those who read them. LIV's (not you liv) will LIVE ON!

And they will do so despite the wonderful Fox, CNN and MSNBC promos lauding the democratic process.

I just wish that Obama would put this "breaking with your own party" meme away.

The only reason McCain is claiming to have broken with his own party is because the Republican brand is in the shitter.

Then they come back and chastise Obama for not breaking with his party. Well, since he has been in the Senate, his party has been on the better side of all the issues. Why break from what is better? Be proud - and say "no, I haven't broken from them, because the Dems have been right."

Good morning everyone. I have a doctor's appointment at 10:45. We'll see what the results are this time.

My problem is the entire mainstream media in this country has pretty much shifted to the right. Aside from Keith and now Rachel, MSNBC can spew the same claptrap as the others. I usually end up drifting to CNN International (which hasn't turned to a crapfest like its domestic channel), BBC World or EuroNews. Now if only I could get the CBC News on a regular basis.

My nightmare scenario would be a Harper Tory majority in the Canadian election on October 14th followed by Grampy McSame winning (or stealing) the election here. Well then, I better brush up on my Spanish so I can go to Costa Rica.
