hu·bris

ˈ(h)yo͞obrəs/Submit

noun

excessive pride or self-confidence.

synonyms: arrogance, conceit, haughtiness, hauteur, pride, self-importance, egotism, pomposity, superciliousness, superiority; More

(in Greek tragedy) excessive pride toward or defiance of the gods, leading to nemesis.

By definition, a President can never be humble. (Exception: Jimmy Carter) Women and Men can be born to be leaders, or trained, or learn by doing. But everyone who leads successfully exudes a certain confidence, and indeed arrogance - and I know from first-hand experience that not everyone can do it, nor does everyone want to do it, which makes an important distinction.

What makes a good leader? That is often difficult to answer. There are universal qualities, but leadership is often situation-based. I think the best qualities of a good leader are patience, empathy, and a willingness to listen.

Things that are all missing from the current White House.

But even bad leaders can lead for a while, of a sort. Brutality, intimidation, and marginalization are all hallmarks of a bad leader. We've all seen this in our professional lives. The "Seagull Manager" is often the cause of many good people leaving, and can sometimes lead to an entire downfall. I unfortunately seem to have a propensity for finding these types of managers in my professional career. It was the last encounter in January of 2017 that led me to leave the healthcare industry for good, but that's another story.

What can we do about it?

From the outside, there usually isn't much that can be done. The good people leave, the entity suffers or even fails, and sometimes that seagull flies away to do their business elsewhere, leaving the survivors to pick up the pieces and move along.

For a business, that can often be devastating...but what does that say about the country?
