A Tale of Two Bills
Author: BobR    Date: 11/16/2017 14:13:03

There is no such thing as certainty when it comes to Congress. Both houses have their pet projects and their own constituencies. Members of the House answer to a specific district; Senators answer to their entire state. As such, getting both houses to agree on the specifics of a bill (that will pass despite opposition party votes) requires some compromise and negotiation.

Such is the situation with the dueling tax bills in the House and Senate. Both are claiming tax "reform" (translation: tax cuts for the rich, with the false implication that "regular" Americans are getting a break too), and both are ignoring the deficit - something they were so keen on when the Democrats were in charge.

Let's take a look at what is in the bills:

  • Big Business gets big permanent tax breaks

  • Small business gets tax breaks, although to a lesser extent

  • Rich people get big tax breaks

  • The estate tax (what RWers call the "Death Tax") goes away completely

  • Average Americans get a small tax break (or none at all) that only lasts until 2023

  • The following deductions disappear:

    • Mortgage interest deduction (Senate version)

    • State & local income tax deduction (House version)

    • Electric vehicle deduction

    • Medical expenses

    • Tax preparation costs

    • Moving expenses

    • College loan interest

    • Theft/loss

Additionally, the Senate version gets rid of the Individual Mandate (remember - that was a tax benefit for people who had insurance).

All of this will balloon the deficit by $1.5T over 10 years. That's trillion with a "T".

Back when the Dems were in control, the Republicans gnashed their teeth and wailed about special interest amendments. "Give us a clean bill" they demanded. Now that they're in charge? The "budget" bill has become an omnibus bill Trojan horse with hidden gems like providing rights for "unborn children" like making them eligible for a college fund. That's right - they take away the college loan interest deduction but add this as a backdoor way to overturn Roe v Wade.

The Republicans are also throwing the majority of Americans under the bus (by making their tax cuts temporary) so they can avoid the 60 vote requirement and use the budget reconciliation process instead.

So what's the status of these heinous bills? The House version seems likely to pass. However, as we've seen in the past, there is a very tight margin in the Senate. Once again, Susan Collins (R-ME) is one of the heroes, along with Ron Johnson (R-WI). McCain may be a holdout as well. This will get even more complicated as the two different bills have to be "merged" and passed by both houses.

The election in AL to fill Session's seat is going to become very important, as well as the 2018 election for the House and 1/3 of the Senate. It feels like we're all here with our fingers in the dyke, trying to hold back a flood. If you have a Republican congressman or senator, you need to let them know how you feel.

Morning

Thought I heard they were taking about the charity deduction too? I only get to use 3 deductions and it seems like they are taking them all away. Fully expect my taxes to go up, AND if they manage to repel the mandate on top of it, I expect my insurance to go up too.All this so corps can get a big tax cut and not reinvest in the US.

In other news, Mala and I have figured out who Tim Minuchin and Louise Linton remind us of. Minerva & Darwin Mayflower the villains from "Hudson Hawk."

Mornin' all!

When I saw that picture, it made me realize that these guys are probably stealing pallets of uncut mint bills with unrecorded serial numbers that will NEVER be detected as counterfeit.

Oh by the way, since the inauguration the value of the US Dollar on foreign exchange markets has dropped 9%. That's a MASSIVE deflationary swing.

Comment by Raine on 11/16/2017 16:04:53
This is a decent start...
Jason Kessler — the organizer of the August Unite the Right rally that drew various factions of the far right before devolving into violence that left one counterprotester dead in Charlottesville — was among those who said that the blue check mark was taken away from his account Wednesday.

Others who said they lost their verified status included the white nationalist Richard Spencer, far-right activists Laura Loomer and James Allsup, and Tommy Robinson, the host of a show on the fringe conservative site Rebel TV. Tim Gionet, an alt-right figurehead who went by the name Baked Alaska, was suspended from the service.

Morning, comrades.

TriSec is hosting Thanksgiving this year, so I have been busily wrangling recipes.

Since I etah Turkey on Thanksgiving, for the sole reason that everyone else is making one, I am going to hunt for a Capon instead.

This is the first one without Mum....but this was never a big holiday in our house(we always traveled or visited), so the loss is not especially keen.

Heck I think this well timed release of this pic is the least of the things he's probably done. The man was part of SNL at the start, just sayin.

That is why I said I am with her and him. Accepting responsibility and accepting that behavior needs to change is something I and many others) want from more men.

We are asking for people who behave this way to take a look at themselves, and I hope that doesn't make me a hypocrite. This is the logical next step now that women and victims are speaking out.

I want to allow for the change in thinking that this behavior is wrong.

I wish Louis CK didn't use the work 'D*ck* in his apology, I deeply wish he didn't because it diminished what he was saying. That said, he accepted responsibility.

Accept and change the things they have the ability to change. I will never accept what they did as acceptable.

I Will accept change in the lens of perception.

I am going to share something -- and I will preface this with the fact that I know we will never agree, and I do find my friend to have grown up to be a racist even well-meaning. I was happy enough for him to acknowledge something. Read this to the end.

The Said friend posted this story with the following tagline: (for some reason it popped up in my top stories TL on FB, strange)
Oklahoma woman who married mother after two 'hit it off' pleads guilty to incest

This is the new culture the leftist kooks want for America.

(the follwing is our exchange.)

Me: No, we don't.

we should all be allowed to call this hot mess of dysfunction as abhorrent.

I think both left and right can agree that this is immoral, abusive adn something that is rejected.

Why would you assume that people on the left would support such a story, Ron?

Why would you think I would?

Friend: I believe we had a conversation similar to this when the definition of marriage was changed. Then I said it was a slippery slope. Shouldn’t everyone be allowed to marry who they want at this point? It’s only fair. Where is your compassion and humanity after all. “Hot mess of dysfunction?” And who created that I wonder? Not a conservative that’s for sure. Who stands with men who look down, see their penis and think their a woman? Who stands for the white woman identifying as an African American woman? What about the white guy who now identifies as a Philippine woman? What about men peeing with little girls? Who stands for drag queens reading stories to kindergarten kids? And we can’t forget the transabled too, identifying as someone with a disability such as a missing arm and has it AMPUTATED by a doctor? (Paid for by the taxpayer no doubt) Who stands for murdering 3,000 babies each day and selling their body parts for profit? I don’t stand for any of this. Conservatives conserve those things which history has proven time and again to be best for the human condition. The above mentioned nonsense is quite the opposite.

Me: This story is not about same-sex marriage. This story is incest and illegalities thereof. It's about a lot of serious issues that have nothing to do with what I surmise you might think it is.

You brought up a lot of issues that I did not.

My question was why would you think people like myself (a liberal) would want incestuous marriage for America? We're the ones out there railing against an alleged pedophile running for Senate in Alabama.

The point I was trying to make is that you might want to dial back on what you think are 'leftist kooks' and try understanding that we are not about repressing children. We don't advocate incest. I'd like to believe this story is universally agreed upon that it is disgusting, it's not left or right. It's not liberal or conservative -- it's disgusting and people will (as they should) go to jail for it.

One more thing, please don't question my humanity. My Humanity was tested the night my father attacked my mother and the police took them away in cop cars. You restored my humanity when you cam to pick me up that night. IT was the summer of 1985. you and your parents took me in that night and you didn't judge me for the sins of my family life.

Why would you judge me now for daring to disagree with you?

Friend: Why would I think liberals would want incestuous marriage in America? Because they are for all the other immoral issues I brought up. One feeds off the other. The wheel has been set in motion for even more degrading of society. Some professors are pushing to make pedophilia just another sexual orientation. Open up the door and everything will be legitimized as normal.

As far as Roy Moore goes, i have read your posts and am so sorry to hear of your own experience as it relates to this however this particular situation is nothing more than a political hit job from McConnell and the boys. Why do you think there is only a dozen real conservatives in all of DC? Just because someone says something does not make it true. If they said it of bill Clinton we could agree because it fits his character but not in this case. I will wait and see. The legitimacy of the yearbook tells the story for me.

You are right in one respect and I will take your advice to heart. I should dial it back. I am playing into the divisiveness of the times and it does no one any good. A quick hit of dopamine and off to the next solves nothing. We have raised 3 beautiful girls that are going to be handed off this mess. If it wasn’t for that I would probably sit back with a coots light and bowl of popcorn and not give a shit.

As far as that phrase about compassion and humanity, I was throwing that back as it is used against us when we take issue with immigration and refugees. It was meant sarcastically and nothing else.

You and I had a very special bond and I would do anything I could for you back then as I would now. Our childhood and upbringing played a big part in shaping our worldview I am sure. and here we are.

We can at least agree on the fact that we dislike trump. That’s at least something anyway.

Yep that's the one..

This doesn't dumb down the fact that this stuff did happen. Al's pretty much admitted that it did & held himself accountable in the most strenuous way I've EVER seen ANY politician do.

What it does is raise lots of questions - how'd he know, who told him, what's the real goal behind getting it out in the news..

We're less than a month from the AL special election. The GOP has lots of time to recover from this Roy Moore mess. This seems like a pretty strong first step in that direction.
