Let them eat in peace?
Author: Raine    Date: 06/27/2018 13:11:29

I have been stewing about this since this editorial was published over the weekend:
We nonetheless would argue that Ms. Huckabee, and Ms. Nielsen and Mr. Miller, too, should be allowed to eat dinner in peace. Those who are insisting that we are in a special moment justifying incivility should think for a moment how many Americans might find their own special moment. How hard is it to imagine, for example, people who strongly believe that abortion is murder deciding that judges or other officials who protect abortion rights should not be able to live peaceably with their families?

These are people carrying out the policies of a deeply flawed and morally suspect administration. They carry out these policies as public servants who are paid with your tax dollars. The problem is the policy of separating families. The problem is rising authoritarianism. We have been here before. Take a look:

That's right, Americans were told to be more civil to Nazis. I'm pretty sure the world can tell us how that worked out. After President Herbert Hoover,
we elected Franklin D. Roosevelt and even the media (at the time) allowed for Americans to be okay with the Rise of Hitler.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dfqzhb8XcAU7t72.jpg

Truth be told, at the time there was no playbook. Decades after World War II the rise and the fall of Hitler's regime, we have his playbook. Still, we are told to be civil. It's not just the media telling us this, it is those in elected office -- in the current majority party demanding we be nicer to a man that incited violence at his campaign rallies. Yesterday, the Speaker of the House said this:
House Speaker Paul Ryan also called on Waters to apologize for her remarks.

“There’s no place for this, she obviously should apologize,” Ryan said Tuesday at a press conference.

“That we should resort to violence, harassment and intimidation? That’s dangerous for our democracy,” he said.

Waters, a California Democrat, called on her supporters at a rally on Saturday to confront Trump Cabinet officials in public spaces like restaurants and department stores to protest the administration's policies.
The thing is, Maxine Waters suggested no such thing.
“In exercising her constitutional right to freedom of speech at a recent rally, Congresswoman Waters did not, as she has made clear, encourage violence, like President Trump has been doing since the election. She, instead, encouraged Americans to exercise their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly by letting President Trump and members of his Administration know that separating young immigrant children from their parents is not who we are as a country," said Congressman Cedric Richmond, chairman of the CBC in a statement.

Richmond instead pointed to Trump's own language insinuating violence on the campaign trail.

“We cannot forget that President Trump, as a candidate, encouraged his supporters to beat up his detractors at rallies, and, as president, morally equated white supremacists with anti-racist activists and encouraged police officers to beat up suspects. In fact, almost every day President Trump says something that makes this country more dangerous for people who look like Congresswoman Waters and other minorities. Where is the national conversation on civility in these moments?" Richmond said.

Waters herself is calling out Trump for perpetuating what she calls "lies."

“Trump is the one who is creating lies,” Waters told reporters on Capitol Hill Monday. “Trying to have people believe that I talked about harming people. There’s nowhere in my statement, anytime, anyplace that we talked about harm.”

I cannot tolerate being told I should be civil when we have a president who mocked disabled reporters. Take a look:

We cannot expect oppressors to be nice to us. They never will, it's not what oppressors do. The people who work for his administration deserve a public shunning in whatever way that works. These are not normal times. This is not a normal administration.

They locked children in cages. They took them away from parents seeking asylum and dropped them off all around this country. They tried to hide what the did to these families from the American public. Every time they were questioned, they lied. If they want to eat in public, they deserve to face consequences. We need to learn from the past.

Remember when we called this uncivil?

or this?

Every time we saw danger encroaching on our nation, we've resisted & we fought back We spoke out when we learned of Black Sites & the crimes at Abu Ghraib. We spoke out against Gitmo & detaining people there because it was on foreign soil. Don't call me uncivil. Call me American.

Raine

Mornin' all..

Said it last night. The fact that election results on various websites are behind a paywall after only auto-updating a few times is a travesty. That is public information and should be open to all who want to view it.

Morning, comrades.

Daytime off for Your Loyal Trisec - I'm taking a group of high rollers to Fenway Park tonight on a charter. Hoping the ol' tip hat overflows.

I'm beginning to grow tired of "arguing" with any such right-leaning friends of mine on the book of face. I've taken to calling them "fucking nazis" and unfriending them immediately.

I have no regrets in burning those bridges.

oh shit.. SCOTUS just handed down the decision on Janus vs. AFSCME.

And now the entire Federal government is "right-to-work-for-less".

Kagan's dissent in this case is magnificent..

I had been preparing myself for this ruling.

Gorsuch is not a legitimate SCOTUS pick and I hope when DOTUS is out of office he is removed from the bench.

McTurtle HAD to know that the Russians were going to install him. he just HAD to know.

We should not be civil if civility is being used as an excuse to silence legitimate criticism. It is fitting to protest officials with whom you disagree. As I recall, Thom Hartmann mentioned that a baker refused to serve Vice President Joe Biden. Paul Ryan did not call the baker uncivil. Rather, he invited him to introduce Ryan at a campaign rally.

What McConnell did is a kind of backwards version of what FDR did when he attempted to pack the courts. He held open this SCOTUS seat along with hundreds of judicial vacancies for YEARS to prevent Obama from being able to exercise his Constitutional power to appoint them.

Fuck the GOP and its Fascist supporters. Hopefully events like what happened in NY-14 will be a wakeup call to the establishment that they should fight these bastards like they fight us.

If we don't act as if we are in a fight for our democracy against oligarchs and their supporters, then we are foolish.

We need to mobilize from the city councils and school boars to the House and the Senate.

Interesting, they told Lee Carter (state rep who's district this is in and like 10 minutes down the road from me) anyway - they told Carter that they had 50-55 teens who all were unaccompanied minors.

I have already been trying to get in touch with them to see if the kids need anything. Getting no answer.

I want to be excited for November but I'm worried. Been watching to much MSNBC with the commentators that are saying that the tRumpers are digging in and the resistance is making them mad so they are going to get out their vote. And that its trending that Millennials and Hispanics aren't going to get out their vote.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, just want to brace for impact.

I wonder....if this is perhaps an "1860" moment we're heading into? Should Trump and his cabal win again, could there be enough sentiment for some of the several states to secede?

And it looks like Kennedy is stepping down from the Supreme Court although based on his last votes the court composition won't change that much.

I think they want to fight that war again. They were all big on the Civil War re-enactments which as George Carlin said were to increase the body count.

Yes, we have to because you know Trump and McConnell are going to pitch someone so far to the extreme right.
