Obama takes Dixville Notch

DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Being first means something to residents of the Granite State, home of the nation's earliest presidential primary and the central focus — however briefly — of the vote-watching nation's attention every four years.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said Dixville Notch is proud of its tradition, but added, "The most important thing is that we exemplify a 100 percent vote."

Dixville Notch resident Peter Johnson said the early bird electoral exercise "is fun." A former naval aviator, Johnson said he was voting for McCain, but added, "I think both candidates are excellent people."

Voting was carried out in a room in a local hotel festooned with political memorabilia from campaigns long past. Each voter gets an individual booth so there are no lines at the magic hour. The votes were quickly counted, announced and recorded on a posterboard that proclaims, "First in the Nation, Dixville Notch."

Morning!

Well mom and I were two of the 50,000 last night and didn't get home until almost midnight but it was worth it. :D

And we got up at 4:30am to get out to wait in line until the polls open this morning. I have NEVER seen our polling place with a line, it was frickin' amazing. But with less the 5hrs sleep we voted happily and noticed on leaving that the line had grown outside. We passed 3 other polling stations on the way to work, everyone was packed with lines well out the doors.

I really believe change is only 24 hours away!

I awoke at about 2 am this morning.

Nestled up against Mrs. TriSec, I just watched the night pass, ocassionally catching another catnap or two.

I was up and about at 5:30, same as always...cursing that "Trouble with Tribbles" had to be on this morning at 6 am. (one of my favorites...)

Out the door at 6:45 for the brief trip down the street to the polls. The line was already down the hall and into the stairwell.

Some muffled announcements from the Poll workers about street addresses and the ballot questions, and then the line was moving.

Everything was smooth; I was number 32 in my precinct.

Standing outside the polling place...I noticed a sugar maple that seemed particularly vibrant this morning...the sun shone brightly on my city through a slight fog, giving it a surreal quality...and the air seemed to be a bit fresher and cooler in the fall chill.

I've done all I can. All we can do now is wait, and hope.

In case anyone didn't know:

Why we vote on Tuesday:

...people used to have to travel overnight to their polling location. (In 1845, horse was the preferred method of transport.) In an effort to avoid religious days of rest, Congress chose Tuesday, leaving Monday and Wednesday as travel days. Tuesday was voting (and horse-resting) day.

Also, Freebies today:

Starbucks is giving away a tall cup of brewed coffee on the house.

Between 5 and 8pm, Ben and Jerry's is celebrating democracy by giving away a free scoop of ice cream.

Krispy Kreme is giving away a star-shaped doughnut with "patriotic sprinkles" to anyone wearing an "I Voted" sticker.

Heya 4Fers, :coffee:

Last night I went to see Iron Jawed Angels (shown for free courtesy of the League of Women Voters). It is a remarkable story and one well-worth remembering as we all exercise our right to vote today. It is important to remember that this right was not always available to every citizen of this democracy, but fought and earned through unbelievable struggle on the part of those who have gone before us. Just my thought for the morning. I am around home today, just waiting to get a call from the Dem Headquarters with directions to a voter's home and info about his/her precinct and then I'm outta here, giving rides to the polls.

Cheers,

mfaye &

Morning all.. My landlord was out the door before me this morning for a change, headed to his polling station to help move folks through the process. Not sure how long the opening lines were, and no idea how they'll be when I finally get there, but I don't care - I've been waiting for this moment for two years and yearning for it for much longer.

Random Anecdotal Evidence:

Random drove around to look at polls (pictures coming soon. And a funny video). about 100 people at each polling place at opening (7:00am eastern) and 100 people at each polling place two hours later (9:00am eastern).

Multiply that by 800 polling places in this county alone.

So what's that mean for turn out?

The no freebies for voters thing is federal law - it's considered a bribe.

Which is why Starbucks, B&J and Krispy Kreme all changed their offers to a freebie for all, whether you voted or not.

Barr winning 0.7% of Guam vote

November 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments

In addition to two small towns in New Hampshire, polls have also closed in Guam, where it is already Wednesday morning. While Guam has no electoral votes, the presidential race does appear on the ballot. Libertarian Bob Barr is the only alternative candidate listed, and with about half of Guam’s votes tallied, he has 97 votes, or 0.7% of the total. Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain 8,796 to 5,355.

Good morning, bloggers, on what I hope will indeed be a good day.

I voted early and was glad to tell someone from the Arizona Democratic Party that I voted early and canvassed for Obama.

This may be a long day, so let's keep an eye on what's going on and be ready to report any irregularites.

It is a good day in America.

As for coverage of the election by Progressive Talk, I know that Nova M Radio and 1480 KPHX will have election coverage until midnight locally (2 AM Eastern) with Brad Friedman, Shelly Drobny, Sean Ryan, Ian Hough and others on the air with the regular hosts. Jeff Farias also will have his own election night coverage featuring Sarge and Leonard Clark.

The early edition of the UNN Daily Headlines are up. I will see if I can add more in between everything going on today, including my job interview.

Have a great day, and vote if you have not done so yet! As Kent Jones would say, vigilance!

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one

Good omen for Obama as Steelers beat Redskins

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Pittsburgh's top-ranked National Football League defense dominated Washington in a 23-6 victory Monday night that served as a good omen for US presidential candidate Barack Obama's White House bid.

The Steelers shut down NFL rushing leader Clinton Portis and sacked Redskins

quarterback Jason Campbell seven times. A third-quarter pickoff of a deflected Campbell pass snapped an NFL record streak of passes without an interception.

Pittsburgh improved to 6-2 while dropping the Redskins to 6-3 on the eve of the US election and thereby under the "Redskins Rule" of US politics delivered a signal that Obama rather than John McCain would win the American presidency.

For 17 consecutive US presidential ballots, the outcome of the Redskins' last home game before Election Day has predicted, some even fancifully claim has actually decided, which candidate will receive the most votes.

(it's good for the Giants too... )

and I kept walking... Then I saw a car stopped at a light... another person with a vote sticker... I pointed and gave a thumbs up... (he btw, had a Georgia tech license plate) he yelled back at me "OBAMA!"

on my way back, I saw another person with a sticker, I went up to him and shook his hand, and thanked him for voting... (he 'looked' conservative) he said no problem, I voted for Obama!

In the epic Clan Mondo trip to Massachusetts, I do remember a lot of steering wheel slapping, muttered cursing and tooth gnashing from Poppa Mondo as we tried to navigate around Boston by car. It was on this trip that I learned the importance of Mass Ave and "stringalights" in the basic Bostonian navigational system. The natives were very helpful in getting the tourists to where they wanted to be.

Hello again. Back from the polls and shopping. There was barely a line at my station. The poll worker said that it was busy it's just been a steady stream of people coming and going but no long lines and she's happy she didn't have them here.

Comment by IzzyBitz on 11/04/2008 22:58:49
I voted for that one!! And NO on 8!!

I vote at a church. Normally they have the polling place in a small classroom. This time it was in the BIG auditorium with about 30 voting stations (normally there are five or six). The nice poll lady said they've been busy all day, with a steady stream of people and lots this morning. AWESOME!

Saw Rachel on Martha's show. Soon it will be party time, with lots of drinking and results in our favor. Joe Ricky's for all my friends.

Well...i feel dirty yes...

Random knew it'd be bad when he saw the guy smokin, on cellphone, insisting on standing near me (and my father) wearing a McCain shirt.

He says weird shit going into the poll. "Obama is second coming of Carter." and "Isreal is going to get bombed tonight" O.O

He comes out, and starts talking same bullshit, and says "I don't understand why the jews are voting for him." And...I will quote...

"I mean...There is no flag.." gesturing to my sign "...uh...He hangs around with sand niggers..." (surprise me) "Hell, he is a nigger..."

He then went to hit on the blond holding a mccain sign (barely legal, short...SHORT shorts.)
