After Hope: Faith
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 11/09/2008 13:39:43

“Faith without works is dead”

Why is Velveeta quoting the bible (James: 2 something or other), you ask? This quote is attributed to Jesus – and it’s a powerful statement. The premise is that just believing alone, will not ensure your salvation in the kingdom of God. (I think that’s what it means; I was kicked out of Baptist Bible School).

In the past year, we have all been about “hope”. Hoping that Barack Obama will beat Hillary in the primary, hoping that he can win the debates, hoping that his message will resonate with “middle America” or “red state America” or even change the mind of a few PUMA’s. We hoped that one day we would have an America where the Government would work with the People - not against the People. We hoped that Americans would once again be seen has good people, caring people, as opposed to a country that invades and occupies other countries based on lies. There were so MANY things to hope for. Not the least of which: will he, can he, possibly win the election!

And so we worked hard to get Barack Obama elected. We knocked on doors and made phone calls, despite our adherence and sheer horror at the thought of being so presumptuous. We spoke to our family and friends and neighbors to plead our case for a President Obama and why he would be a better choice. We spoke to our peers and tried to encourage them to work for change – or in some cases, to give up on that wasted vote for a third party candidate, just this year.

Our work has paid off. We now have a President-elect Obama, and, he’s already accomplished more in one week than our lame duck president has accomplished in a year!

We can take this time to be proud and to relax after all the hard work, but only for a moment. Now the real work begins! And now we must move from HOPE to FAITH.

I don’t agree with everything Obama says. Certainly I think he is wrong for saying that marriage should be defined between a man and woman – denying millions of gays and lesbians a chance for equality. Sadly, we will remain “separate but equal”. The government should not be involved in any religious ceremonies, only in civil unions. Let churches decide who can or cannot be “married”.

I don’t agree with promoting “clean coal”. While burning it might be cleaner, the mining of the coal still destroys our mountains and wildlife habitats.

But, sometimes it takes small steps to accomplish big leaps; and so I still plan to continue the work, and to have faith. After all, we must remember that, unlike bush/cheney, Obama/Biden will represent all Americans, including the ones that disagree with them.

Our President-elect inspires faith in many people. Here is one example:

I can honestly say that we can finally wave goodbye to the overwhelming anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry that we have suffered with for the past eight years under the Bush administration. We can expect less wars, less corruption, less political abuse. It won’t be perfect, but it will get better. I am so happy and proud of all the Americans who worked extremely hard for Obama, understanding fully well the importance of change in every sense of the word.
This is a win for all of us, not just America.

This is a win for civil rights and justice.

For all the pessimists out there, allow us to enjoy this moment. If you learned anything from this campaign, you would learn that it starts with hope — not cynicism. And hope is what I have right now, for America and the Middle East.

We can do it, and this time, we can be sure that we can do it together.

I haven’t said this in a really long time, but I am loving America right now.

This inspiring piece was not written by some anonymous American blogger on one of the coasts, rather it comes from Esra’a, Bahrain. (mideastyouth.com blog).

Faith in humanity.

The Obama administration has a very long uphill battle ahead of them, and they will need our support and our faith. Never give up. The real work begins.

Yeah Velveeta,

Thank you for making sure that every Sunday I will have a thoughtful, entertaining post to ruminate about the rest of the day (if not the entire week :D). I am happy to report that my new grrrl friend (how long is a friend considered "new"?) and I had a spectacular day yesterday - we visited the Tall Grass Prairie and Woolaroc, we drove right by a Bison and listened to the sound of the Oklahoma ocean (the sound of wind sweeping through the tall grass) and sat and talked - in the car, on a bench at Woolaroc and over a delicious breakfast (in Pawhuska, OK) and a mahvlous dinner (in Tulsa), we laughed that at one point in our ramblings that we had ended up in Kansas (Toto :P). All-in-all we had a great day together and I hope it is just the beginning of many more days to come.

Thanks Velveeta - you and Auntie Azalea inspire me and give me hope and even faith that tomorrow just might be better than today. &

Cheers,

mfaye

I haven’t said this in a really long time, but I am loving America right now.

I didn't post this yesterday, but probably should have.

As most of you know, I've been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since I was 8 years old; except for a brief interlude during my college years, I've never been out of uniform.

Anyway, Friday night is our den meeting night, and I wrangled my boys through a chapter in the Bear book called "What makes America Special". In past years, it's been mostly a philosophical exercise, these things on paper that should technically make America special.

Friday night, it was a joy to teach this lesson. And for years now, I have felt vaguely uneasy going through the rote of the Pledge of Allegiance...I was trembling Friday night after reciting it. For the first time in I can't remember how long, it meant something again.

I hope to be able to get out to Lexington and Concord this afternoon ('tis a beautiful fall day in New England) and sit by the graves of the fallen Minutemen for a second, just to let them know everything is OK.

I figured it was time to start looking at hotels in DC for the inaugural but it already looks like every hotel in the Washington area is booked up. So it looks like unless I can crash with someone, there's no way I am going to make it.

Liv, check the MARC and Virginia Rail websites....there's several commuter rail corridors into the city, and some distance out. You'd save money on the hotel and be just a quick train ride from Union Station; you might actually do better than some of us staying closer in.

I just saw a report on Headline News on how ticket brokers are charging thousands of dollars for tickets to the inaugural in what is supposed to be a free event.

Good morning all, thanks for your usual Sunday excellence Velveeta.

Just waiting to go out to lunch with our neighbors, sorta like a thank you for transporting them to and from the hospital a couple of weeks ago. Need to decide pretty quick where I want to go.

VJ, another in a series of thought provoking posts. Well played, madam. Well played indeed.

Hello everybody. It is a good Sundee. I can relax, I've got a new lock for the front door, the old one seems to be on its last legs. I will be attempting to replace the lock in a few minutes. Herding the cats into the bedroom so they don't wander outside is next on the agenda.

Joy.

Time to head off to the salt mine again.

Back from lunch. Went to Bertucci's and did a little double take when I looked at the little windows between the booths that had various Italian fare on them. Pizza, Calzone, Vino, Gnocci..... Gnocci?? Nah, no way. Of course after asking the waitress I get the bad news. They did serve the stuff years ago, I suggested they really should remove that particular pane of glass, it gets my hopes up needlessly.

Must be a rather strange feeling for Stephanie to be on a show (Reliable Sources) with no right-wingers to contend with.

Afternoon, folks....

It's been a strange Sunday... we'll see how this progresses...

Does anyone have floor space I can crash on for the inauguration? The only group I've found with rooms needs me to pony up about $340 pre-tax for two nights with no guarantee of even one roommate.

You want to work something out. Right now, I don't think I would be able to go and I'm beginning to think it might be easier to sit home and watch it on the HD set.

Actually, right about now you might not want to be watching.

VERY questionable call there. Looked like Eli was over the line when he released that.
