Veteran's Day 2008
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/11/2008 11:23:43

Good Morning.

Today is our 2,064th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualties from the warron terra, courtesy of antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4193
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 4054
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3732
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3335
Since Election (1/31/05): 2756

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 314
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 626
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 379
Contractor Deaths - Iraq: 445

We find this morning's cost of war passing through: $ 570, 208, 000, 000 .00

Our friends at IAVA are celebrating veteran's day this year by launching a new ad campaign. Apparently, despite getting a new GI Bill in this last session of congress, the Pentagon is doing a terrible job publicizing it, so once again it falls to the veteran's groups to make sure the soldiers get everything they're entitled to. We all hope this will stop under President Obama.

What has the power to shut down part of JFK Airport, the Number 7 Subway Train, and one of the busiest intersections in New York City?

A bold new campaign to support veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’ve told you before about the isolation many troops feel when they come home from Iraq. It’s a shock to realize you’ve been fighting a war while for the average American, life has gone on basically unchanged. For many veterans returning from war, it can be hard to reconnect with friends, family and community.

So today, as people gather nationwide to honor all those who have served, I have a very exciting announcement to make. IAVA is launching a historic, groundbreaking Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign aimed at easing the transition for veterans returning home from combat. Created by veterans, for veterans, this innovative media campaign is like nothing America has ever seen.

We’re going to make sure that today’s veterans find the community and the support that they have earned. These PSAs, which will soon be running nationwide, were created in partnership with the Ad Council. You might not know the organization, but you definitely know their campaigns - these are the folks responsible for “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk” and “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.” This new campaign will be just as iconic and just as effective.

Sure, it’s a powerful ad. But what is this PSA going to do to help vets?

It will bring them together and connect them with the veteran’s hall of the future. Veterans coming home have told us again and again, the thing they need most of all is to reconnect with other vets. So this innovative campaign links veterans to a new private social network, exclusively for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, at www.CommunityOfVeterans.org.

For many veterans, they are in Baghdad one day and Brooklyn the next. They don’t come home to a community full of people who have also fought in Iraq. CommunityOfVeterans.org will be a place they can build bonds with people who understand where they’re coming from. The website will also provide veterans with a searchable database of vetted resources - including everything from free counseling to help with your home loan. In addition, they’ll get access to specials for vets only-from sporting event tickets to free music.

We’ve all heard horror stories about vets struggling to find their place after coming home from combat. This historic campaign will save lives, and it will finally turn the page on how veterans were treated in America after Vietnam. This is the welcome home that our newest generation of heroes has been waiting for.

But there is still more to do after Veterans Day is over. Our new President will have to move boldly and quickly to support new veterans and their families. And he’ll need the support of every single American-no matter who they voted for or where they stand on the war.

So, what is everyone doing for Veteran's Day this year? Unfortunately, this is one of those holidays that is "optional" in many companies. Fortunately, where I work now gives us the day. (You know who I work for; he can't NOT have Veteran's Day). I always thought it was unfair, especially if there are any servicemen that have to work on a day that was set aside to honor them. If you're sitting at your desk today, why not dash off an e-mail to the CEO asking him why?

Like I said, I have the holiday today...so file under "isn't it ironic?"....I'm off to burn flags this morning.

"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Every year on Veteran's Day, the town of Concord, MA puts on an elaborate ceremony with Revolutionary War re-enactors, current VFW and US Servicemen, and of course an army of local Scouts.

So...remember to fly your flag today if you can, and thank a veteran. We've still got a few weeks until Mr. Obama takes office, and probably a few months after that before anything will really change in Iraq. But hope is coming!

I have heard that at least some of the challenges to Prop 8 that are coming out are going to use that argument which would mean that passing a change to the California Constitution especially one that takes away rights cannot be valid through a simple majority vote especially when the constitution was supposed to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

Morning everyone! Where to begin hmm...

I hope your commutes to work were less adveturous than mine was on this holiday.. DAMN it's too cold to be walking a half hour to catch a sunday schedule bus route!

Okay - "it is what it is" is right up there with "wuteva!" in my book. It's just a more polite way of blowing you off or trying to express frustration with a subject.

And in reply to Shel's post late last night.. Sorry about the lack of immediate response to your situation, but hang in there. I was without a steady permanent job for nearly five years, bounching from temp gig to temp gig, trying to get a foothold somewhere and then when I think I have one my foot gets crushed in the door. And I've been at the same point you have been - 2-3 months out from an assignment, living off minimal unemployment checks, filing tens of applications and resumes weekly only to get one response a month. IT SUCKS, but if anything it makes you work even harder. If you have to, stick with the temp jobs for a while - even in bad times people will be out sick, or on medical leave, or a company will have sudden short-term rushes where they need people to come in. That's where you pounce on the opportunities and earn a premium for being flexible. And you can collect between gigs, even if it's not much. Use the extra time to your advantage and learn to live minimally and outside the normal routine, especially if you're near an urban center. That way when you get back in the game you'll be at an even greater advantage.

 Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing is gonna be alright!

Oh yah.. I've decided to build my brother a new computer for Christmas & his birthday.

I would look outside the city but near the metro or VRE.

At this point I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to make it in on that day. It all depends on the weather, work and driving conditions

Comment by BobR on 11/11/2008 15:34:44
Sorry for the size of this, but my sister sent me this email and I thought it was cute:

Why did the chicken cross the road?

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a change! The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MCCAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialog with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either or against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the scree n, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. What is your definition of crossing?

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new p roblems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmers Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

JERRY FALWELL: Because the chicken was gay! Can't you people see the plain truth? That's why they call it the other side. Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay, too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like the other side. That chicken should not be crossing the road. It's as plain and as simple as that.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2008, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken2008. This new platform is much more stable and will never reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

I wish it was that clear - that's why it will end up in the Courts -AGAIN.
