While we are all waiting for that day in January, it is sometimes easy to forget that we still have a president *ush. While some are practically pleading for him to do nothing until January, I find myself in the peculiar position of thinking that this is not really a good idea, especially when you take a look at who is actually running things right now.

Hey wait a minute... who IS in charge right now? CitiBank is in major rescue talks with the White House, and yet, yesterday spokeperson, Dana Perino said they were not aware of any talks. She said this aboard Air Force One, while traveling with the current pResident. Interesting considering some papers are reporting this plan has already been approved. Here is just a taste of it:
Under the agreement, Citigroup and regulators will back up to $306 billion of largely residential and commercial real estate loans and certain other assets, which will remain on the bank's balance sheet. Citigroup will shoulder losses on the first $29 billion of that portfolio.

Any remaining losses will be split between Citigroup and the government, with the bank absorbing 10 percent and the government absorbing 90 percent. The Treasury Department will use its bailout fund to assume up to $5 billion of losses. If necessary, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. will bear the next $10 billion of losses. Beyond that, the Federal Reserve will guarantee any additional losses.

In exchange, Citigroup will issue $7 billion of preferred stock to government regulators. In addition, the government is buying $20 billion of preferred stock in Citigroup. The preferred shares will pay an 8 percent dividend and will slightly erode the value of shares held by investors.
The Financial Times is calling this a 'Bad Bank' Plan
The “good bank-bad bank” structure being discussed by Citi and US regulators resembles the October plan under which UBS said it would shift up to $60bn of illiquid securities to a fund owned by the Swiss National Bank, said a major Citigroup shareholder who was briefed on the plan by someone with direct knowledge of it.

However, significant obstacles remain before the plan to revive Citi can be put into effect, people familiar with the matter said. “How do they justify doing it with Citi and not for the others?” asks one. “If they guarantee everything only at Citi, they would be putting Citi’s competitors at a huge competitive disadvantage.”

Another potential stumbling block could be the resources of the government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program (Tarp). Helping Citi would substantially reduce the money available to help other banks.
Please Note the mention of the bank UBS. UBS was also a client of famous lobbyist... Phil Gramm-- I digress. I am left here seriously wondering who the hell is in charge and what the hell is going on. *ush was off at the Apac Summit in Peru, touting how wonderful his economic plan when the crap is coming down heavy and hard back here at home.
Offering no hint of remorse for the lack of regulation of Wall Street and the US sub-prime mortgage market that was a root cause of the worldwide turmoil, he said: "It is also essential that governments resist the temptation to overcorrect by imposing regulations that would stifle innovation and strangle growth.

"One of the enduring lessons of the Great Depression is that global protectionism is a path to global economic ruin." [...]

"Expanding trade and investment has been one of the highest priorities of my administration," he said. "When I took office, America had free trade agreements in force with only three nations. Today, we have agreements in force with 14."
Right now all I am asking for is until January, that he be actively engaged and accountable for what he and his Neo-conservative ideologues have wrought on our nation. Is that too much to ask? I think it is, considering some people don't seem to realize that *ush has all but checked out of the White House. This weekend Joe Lieberman espoused some of his magical knowledge and intellect.
But some members of Congress said Sunday that even that might not be soon enough — Senator Joseph Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, said that President George W. Bush and Obama should work together now to put a stimulus package in place by early next year. Otherwise, he said, the Obama approach would probably take until the second quarter of next year, "and that's too long."
How can they work together when the current HEAD of the administration has no idea what is going on right in front of his eyes? HE shows no interest on working on anything at all.

I should not be shocked. George W. Bush has NEVER taken a position without totally destroying any of the successes it may have had in the past or the future. What makes me so angry is that THIS time, THIS time it is a COUNTRY. Not an oil company, not a baseball team... it the United States of America, and he has totally checked out.

It's going to be a long winter spent in a holding pattern until competent people take over to try to land this chaotic flight of fancy the *ush administration and the Neo-cons have taken us on. I don't envy them. The task is huge.

At least know they will have to go the distance, instead of skipping out totally right before the end of it all. That called maturity and responsibility... Maybe in the end, it was a good thing *ush went awol instead of becoming a pilot, huh?

:peace: and
Raine

It's seems a LOT vague on details, and I don't really trust this --- Are they trying to circumvent and Obama Health care proposal?

It seems that way.

Seems iffy. Health Plans control who they cover through the notorious "pre-existing condition" loophole. It does have a byline of Boston, where everyone is forced to be covered through expensive, high-deductible, high-copay plans or they get a tax penalty. The plans might not lose money, but hospitals and other health-care providers are, primarily because the legislation did away with the free-care pool. In this state, you can't be turned away from an ER if you don't have insurance, but now instead of the state giving back Medicaid rates, the hospitals get nothing.

Paul Krugman linked to a good compilation of views on the Citigroup Bailout. By the way Boehner, the leaky Congressman, wants the elimination of the capital gains tax. I will give the Leaky One credit for being consistent. It may be his sole virtue.

I have been thinking about this brehaha over the possible picks by Obama regarding the economy.

There are many things to be stated about this, but it keeps coming back to me that especially in the beginning of his administration, would PE Obama want to put people in who understand the reasons why we got here? In other words, that would mean people who have SEEN it happen. That does not mean they are going to continue those policies, I think it means they have the knowhow how to slowly change the policies back to things with more regulation and oversite. I don't think you can just walk in and turn around 180 degrees economically in a crisis as huge as this. if we thought the markets were chaotic now, imagine stopping EVERYTHING and turning it in the other direction.

Many of these people were in the clinton administration, I understand, but who else is left? All the people from Raygun and Bushies... Those that were in the Carter admin are probably too old at this point.

The point is, Barack wants to change the economic direction of this country, and with the mess that we have know, it seems as tho you want people who understand it right now. I don't think for one minute these people are going to stay the course, and I also believe these people have had enough distance to see what was good and what could have been better from the Clinton administration. The Clinton Doctrine is NOT the Obama doctrine.

Just a thought.

Regarding Citicorp.... one of the things the "news" is saying is that this bailout is needed because the banking industry is so big. Well, they got so fucking big from all this deregulation. I think HRC has a money problem...
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's team has told the Federal Election Commission that she continued her campaign even after endorsing Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama on June 7, a claim that lets her transfer millions of dollars from her presidential bid to her Senate campaign.

The former first lady made the $6.4 million transfer from her White House campaign, which remains more than $7 million in debt, to Friends of Hillary on Aug. 28. That date would fall outside the legal deadline for making such a move if her campaign were to have ended June 7.

Her campaign treasurer told federal regulators that Mrs. Clinton spent more than a quarter-million dollars engaging in "vigorous political activity" throughout June, according to newly released FEC filings.

"The committee continued to actively contest for delegates at the state and local delegate-selection events during the month of June," campaign treasurer Shelly Moskwa wrote in a letter to the FEC dated Nov. 20. "Nothing in Senator Clinton's remarks indicated that she was withdrawing from the race.

"While she indicated that she was suspending her campaign, the term 'suspension' has no legal meaning," Ms. Moskwa wrote.

Precisely when Mrs. Clinton, who is expected to be Mr. Obama's secretary of state nominee, dropped out of the Democratic presidential primaries is emerging as an important legal question for FEC regulators examining the transfer of funds. Such transfers are legal if donors give their permission, and the Clinton campaign has said donors indeed authorized the move.

Still, such transfers also must take place within 60 days of when a candidate withdraws from the race, according to FEC rules. The Aug. 28 transfer date fell more than 80 days after...

Something seems very fishy with this, and I am wondering if this is going to hurt her chances of being SoS. Why would she transfer millions to her Senate campaign when she still owed the vendors and the campaign itself all that money?

ACtually, never saw the show, but with this huge rush of Vampire related T.V. and movie shit, it can't be good.

So you know, not every game is a blood-soaked violent rampage through the streets of a New York-esque city. Some of them are detailed, well thought out stories that are better then most of the bullshit seen on T.V.

I'll agree with you there man.. TV for the most part has become a wasteland. It kinda sucks 'cause I have all my regular stuff on auto-timers so the channel just auto-flips and stuff, and sometimes watching the same stuff almost every night can be a bit monotonous.

Don't be messing with my anime, Mondo.

However, if you look at "Space Cruiser Yamato" (known as Star Blazers in the US), you'll see all the basic characters that appear in any anime since. (It's true, all the male leads look like Wildstar, and all the female leads look like Nova).

However, their storylines and concepts are light-years ahead of anything produced in the US.

Seems to me that cartoons in the US are created for maximum gross factor, while Japan still tries to tell a compelling story.

Also, Anime seems to treat animation as a serious medium for story telling. Instead of a comedic one.

When did I say it was a superior art form? I'm actually a fan of animation in general. It's one of those things that happened to us GenXers..

The thing that pulls me in is the stories anyways. You don't need animation for quality dramatic storylines.

I full heartidly admit to stereotyping. But doesn't change the fact that vampire fiction is big now, or to be more precise that urban fantasy (mordern world fantasy) is very big, hence people buying up book properties to make T.V. shows of it. Dresden last year (or year before, can't remember, just pissed it was canceled) True Blood, Twillight, That vampire show last year that was canceled.

I personally blame the resurgance of Doctor Who for it.

Art hasn't gotten bad, you just can't change what you like. Yepper, Bobber. Have you read Maltin's book on this history of animation. Hell, even the neo-disney Disney stuff is pretty good. But then getting the guys who did "Little Shop of Horrors" to write your music was stroke of genius. Give it up for Roy Disney he brought great animation back to Disney.

Then say that! Don't tease. I agree with you a lot of the current crop of vampire stuff is really icky. What I like about Trueblood is it basically Southern Gothic with supernatural twist. Plus all the vampires besides Bill Compton are amoral blood sucking freaks. As far a Twilight goes, anything that has a fan base of 13-year old girls, well enough said.

My point was Vamp Fic/Modern Fantasy TV is currently really popular, i know books have had it for years. It was Moon something or other, it wsa dumped quick, it was on ABC, or CBS, or NBC.

To conclude this disturbing confused rant, I don't blame Buffy or Angel cause they came and went, and were basically the only fantasy-esque shows on T.V. Now, basically since Doctor Who came back Fantasy is big. (I know Who is a bit more Sci-Fi-ie, but it's still very modern day((you know what i mean)), so it counts). With Dresden, and this year true Blood, Twillight. That new Sci-Fi show, with the woman from SG-1.

It's what's big now.

Random, Disney and Warner Bros never treated animation as a child only medium. This is a very common misunderstanding. The Warner Brothers cartoons from the 30s, 40s and early 50s were never meant for a kid only audience. This is why you have Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd singing opera. Disney has from the git go trying to make stuff that appeals to all ages. There is some very serious stuff in the classic cannon o Disney. They have villains that are supremely creepy and scary. Snow White comes to mind. The thing with Disney is Walt went totally family friendly in the 50s, hence the Mickey Mouse Club. This where cartoons became linked with kids only. Disney to their detriment until Eisner took over the company, churned out a massive pile of cheaply animated crap that wasn't aimed at a mass audience, it was stuff parents saw as obligation to suffer threw with their kids. When Eisner, Katzenburg and Roy Disney decided to start making full length animated movies again, they hired quality like Menkin and Ashman to write the stories and music. The stuff works on the kid level and the adult level as well.

Comment by livingonli on 11/24/2008 17:44:43
Besides, how many Warner Bros. cartoons have you seen with references to rationing and other side events of the homefront during WWII that were topical at the time those cartoons were made?

What annoys me is that there are few outlets that show the classic cartoons anymore. Tom and Jerry and the other aspects of the MGM library run on Cartoon Network and Boomerang along with the occasional Popeye cartoon but what about Looney Tunes or even Woody Woodpecker for that matter? And Disney only occasionally shows the classic cartoon on either Disney Channel or Toon Disney anymore.

The problem, with making things for all ages, means it has to well be kid friendly, and ultimately and kid movie. Nothing wrong with that, but All those movies are Kid movies. Great stories, wonderful animation, beautifully acted. But i can tell you the end of each of those stories before i sit and watch them. Big Bad guy is defeated, guy gets girl. When an animated movie or show comes out where the ending can't be read from the moment you sit down, then I'll treat it as an actual medium for story telling in this country.

Eeep. Who passed out the contrary pills this morning?

I saw several episodes of True Blood and enjoyed it. The plot twists kept my interest and I always enjoy seeing Larry of Larry, Daryl and Daryl fame - it's the little things that entertain me so! However, I hope Mr. Bell can keep it up story wise. In my humble opinion, Six Feet Under jumped, slaughtered and ate the shark after the first season. I just stopped giving a rip about the characters and their pathetic lives. Oh, well.

Comment by Scoopster on 11/24/2008 17:47:09
I'll agree on Mondo about Disney. Their stuff is designed for a wide audience at first, that's for certain. But after the initial story has been out, they have this tendency to dumb everything down and market it to death almost exclusively to kids, and that's what turns me off because that's how the quality and meaning of the art is killed.

I don't know if I could've said it better.

I would add that I grew tired of mass market animation (like the 30 minute toy commercials that Livin mentioned) and anime because the quality of the artwork sucked. I mean really sucked hard. You have a static poorly drawn character, and the mouth moves in some general relation to the dialog. It's awful.

I don't care how good the stories are - if the visuals are awful, then you've lost me.

Vamp fiction been popular for a long while now - think it appeals to teens in particular, I got into it with Anne Rice and Interview (which I think is better then Lestat) way back in HS.

what Vamp show are you talking about that got cancelled? I dont' remember one from last year. I mean personally I'm a total Buffy/Angel fan - one of my fave Angel epi is still the one where Angel gets turned into a puppet.

Anyway - what does this have to do with the Doctor?

It's what's big now.

now I remeber - Moonlight. It was a complete rip off of Angel. Look for the Dollhouse if you like Joss Weldon, it should be on Fox soon I think.

I love the new Doctor - never got to see it before so it was all very new to me. Infact I have to do back and really catch up on the whole series.

Santuary, feh, not really sure about it yet. Just cant' get past Amada Tappings bad British accent. Never got into Dresdan, I tried, just didn't catch my attention. Personally, I'm way into Heroes right now.

For a while it was all wizards and witches, now it's vamps and monsters, next it'll be space and stuff like that - SciFi/Fantasy is just as cyclical as mainstream storytelling.

I'm sorry, you're talking about what...Speed Racer? That was just ported over and had someone read the lines without any treatment to the animation to make it even look like it was done properly? Or do you treat anything that was dubbed as poor because the words don't match the lips?

Maybe you should look at current Anime, where it looks good, and when it's brought to the states they actually edit the mouths so it kind of looks like what they're saying.

Oh, well.

Nate Fisher, most annoying asshole on TV, ever. Even after he died, he was annoying. Ironically Izzy that to me made the show so compelling, the cast o' characters were very day to day people who fucked up a lot. Just like regular folks. Granted some of it was hyper real.

Daryl aka BD Farman manager of the only hotel in Deadwood is one of the great unsung character actors in America. He (Larry Sanderson) was great in Blade Runner as well.

I remember having a debate back in the early nineties about science fiction on TV. My position was I'd rather have no SF on TV than bad SF on TV. This was sparked by the awful (sorry Tri, I know you liked it) Alien Nation being on network TV, well Fox. My personal favorites happen to be Rurouni Kenshin and Case Closed, but i have no idea where you'd find them online. (The first being a pseudo-Historical story, the second a basic Murder Mystery kind of thing)

Also, Note that Localization also kills a lot of Anime (All those that are marketed towards kids, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Dragon-ball) Actually seen in their pure form, they are good. I would suggest watching anime in it's original language, with subtittles.

To point out, Pokemon's problem was localization, and people in the states thinking Cartoons are a kids only thing. Pokemon is highly edited. It's deeper (and more disturbing) in it's original form. Same with all those other 4Kids Anime B.S. you see on Saturday mornings.

Pokemon is bunk.

It's completely unwatchable crap. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on there. (I should ask Javi; he loves this junk.)

But veering away slightly, highest of all on my "unwatchability" scale has to be the Power Rangers. Utterly insipid...and those big, beefy, "megazord" suits they wear when destroying a miniature Tokyo don't even look as good as the classic Godzilla stuff..

What have you seen?

My personal favorites happen to be Rurouni Kenshin and Case Closed, but i have no idea where you'd find them online. (The first being a pseudo-Historical story, the second a basic Murder Mystery kind of thing)

Also, Note that Localization also kills a lot of Anime (All those that are marketed towards kids, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Dragon-ball) Actually seen in their pure form, they are good. I would suggest watching anime in it's original language, with subtittles.

Hmm if you're into Rurouni Kenshin you'll probably like Samurai Champloo..

And ca-ching! http://www.animeviewer.net/ - not the greatest way to watch, that'd be just downloading stuff from a distro on IRC or someplace..

But veering away slightly, highest of all on my "unwatchability" scale has to be the Power Rangers. Utterly insipid...and those big, beefy, "megazord" suits they wear when destroying a miniature Tokyo don't even look as good as the classic Godzilla stuff..

And why is it on Toon Disney when it's not even a Disney series? Then again, Toon Disney has been running a lot of non-Disney related cartoons lately including the Bruce Timm Batman and Superman cartoons and the 90's Marvel Cartoon series (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk and the Avengers).

Hm...I dunno, what really made me Love Rurouni Kenshin really wasn't setting, it was Kenshin, who is really my ideal hero (basically the kind of character who i base all my hero characters on *coughrenoldcough*) That and Sano is great.

That side note, i always thought about getting Samurai 7.

Toon Disney was originally intended as a showcase for the Disney library of cartoons excluding those "classics" that Disney keeps in the vault except for the periodic video release every few years. Disney did purchase the Saban library and acquired the rights to nearly all the pre-2000 animated series featuring Marvel Comic characters excluding the 60's Fantastic Four cartoon which is still owned by Hanna-Babera. But the Superman and Batman series are still owned by Warner Brothers but I guess there is no room on the Cartoon Network or Boomerang schedules for them.

Barack Obama's Transition Team has announced that the President-elect will be holding a press conference tomorrow morning in Chicago.

The press conference was announced by spokesman Ben Finkenbinder in an e-mail advisory to reporters on Monday afternoon.

A person who picked up the phone at Obama's Transition Team Press Office told BNO News that they would not release details on the press conference prior to the event, which is unusual to his previous events.

The press officer declined to say if the press conference was related to announcing new positions within the Obama administration.

Barack Obama is expected to name Hillary Clinton as his Secretary State, according to previous media reports.

The press conference, on Tuesday, will take place in Chicago's Hilton Hotel. The event is scheduled to start at 12 pm Eastern Time.

The book gives a very detailed history of both of these men and how the modern day LDS as well as the FLDS has come to be.

It is a lot more than just the history of these 2 men.

What, no Charles Manson?

Not yet at least. Somehow I feel more safe having Manson released into the public than say Rove or Cheney.

I only bring them up because how can you be surprised that the LDS in it's current carnation if you know that it was basically founded by a Con artist.

If i were as hated as W. I'd release Manson just to fuck of the people who said i was shitty.

Then on my last day i'd do a "Who's fucked now" speech as i fly away, and never come back.

I understand. That Is why I oft refer to this 'religion' akin to a cult. Smith was a con artist... and look at what that con wrought.

The history of what happened after him is something that people - imo - should understand, it has manifested itself into a much bigger thing than just a few con men playing a few people.

How do you think Utah became a state? That was no con game, that was the result of people BELIEVING in a con fomented many years before in Palmyra NY. Random, I think you would be intersted in the book as well.

Not really. It's a church founded by Con-men and other weird people (Bring'em Young). It doesn't surprise me that those in charge are Con-men and other weird people.

I don't think I shared this last week when the Palin Turkey video broke. With all apologies to the US Army: There is clueless and then there Sarah Palin clueless.

Yep Jos. Smith was even a more brilliant con man than L Ron Hubbard. Both Mormonism and Scientology are pretty effing loopy.

I think L Ron Hubbard has the problem of being a Fiction Author of some acclaim.

Smith had an easier time of it. (despite going to jail and getting shot)
