The Campaign Starts Now

By now, all of you have seen (and probably discussed) the huge news yesteday that presumed Democratice presidential nominee Joe Biden picked Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate. It's a historic first - a black woman (or woman of color, if you prefer) on a major party's presidential ticket. Of course, she and Biden don't deserve to win just because of that - they NEED to win because of tRump and Pence.

Our country is in rough shape, despite the fact that tRump campaigned on the slogan "make America great again". He has done quite the opposite, trashing the economy, the environment, our relationships with our allies, and allowed us to continue wallowing in a pandemic which is killing thousands daily. THE most important thing this election year is to get him OUT of office so he can do no more damage.

That's not to say he won't try - if (when? please?) he loses in November, he will have 2 months to burn it all down before Biden and Harris have to come in and clean it up. tRump will be taking the fixtures and silver, and stuffing suitcases with cash (figuratively), and flipping the country a bird as he walks out the door. I fully expect him to resign a few days before, so that 1) Pence can pardon him, and 2) so he won't have to sit there and watch Biden be inaugerated from just a few feet away.

Despite the conventions not yet occurring, the general election campaign starts now. The ads, the campaigning, the requests for donations start now. The trashing and vilification of Harris begin now (I hoped she's ready for it, from a psychological and a safety perspective). The closer it gets to November, the uglier it will get. We will learn to what levels of disgust we can have for our fellow citizens, especially those we've considered friends. Those who weren't jettisoned when Obama ran for president, will likely get purged this time around. Sadly, Harris will get fragged by some friendly fire too, because some consider her to be "too establishment".

For some of you, she was your first pick for president right from the start, and this is a cause for celebration. She was not my first pick, and I had thought she'd make a great Attorney General. Nonetheless, I too am excited, and very happy for this ticket. She is smart, confident, and will be in a fine position to run for the top stop in 4 or 8 years (or take over in the event the worst happens).

Four years ago, Hillary Clinton was the first female presidential candidate on a major party ticket. She got 3 million more votes than tRump, despite his electoral college win. Before her, we had eight years of a black man in the office. America is ready for this. America is ready to vote for someone regardless of gender or color if they think this person can do the job well.

Here's hoping the voters show up in November.
