Punked!
Author: Raine    Date: 12/04/2008 13:14:45

... and also she won't get fooled again---
When a man sounding remarkably like President-elect Barack Obama called a Florida congresswoman Wednesday, she assumed it was a crank call.

So Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen hung up. But, the Miami Herald reports, this was no prank.

"I thought it was one of the radio stations in South Florida playing an incredible, elaborate, terrific prank on me," Ros-Lehtinen told the newspaper. "They got Fidel Castro to go along. They've gotten Hugo Chavez and others to fall for their tricks. I said, 'Oh, no, I won't be punked.'"
I guess the phone call adventures of Sarah Palin have a few people gun shy, but I found this little story fascinating. Although I am sure this is a strange fluke, I am left wondering how many times the pResident that we have now has actually made calls like this -- Especially across the aisle.

I mean not everything in Washington is a joke, right? Right? It's not like Obama tried to sell her the Empire State Building or anything.
In one of the biggest heists in American history, the Daily News "stole" the $2 billion Empire State Building.
And it wasn't that hard.

The News swiped the 102-story Art Deco skyscraper by drawing up a batch of bogus documents, making a fake notary stamp and filing paperwork with the city to transfer the deed to the property. [...]

Less than 90 minutes after the bogus documents were submitted on Monday, the agency rubber-stamped the transfer from Empire State Land Associates to Nelots Properties LLC. Nelots is "stolen" spelled backward.
And you wonder how people like Paulson can get away with stealing 700 billion dollars from Americans.

Yeah I know the stories weren't very political... Seems to me it should be easier to talk to a congressperson than it is to steal a building, no?

Now -- I am off to talk to a guy about a bridge in Brooklyn he is trying to sell me.

:peace: and
Raine

It seems to me a smart person (especially one working in government, who supposedly would be contacted by the president) would wait half a minute past the introduction to see if it's a prank or not (because if the President asks you is your refrigerator is running, it's a prank. And if he asks about a bill, it's not)

Empire State Building theft - HA! -- Trump should have tried that route (rather than trying to obtain control over the ground lease via eviction of the primary lease holders) in the late 90's -- maybe he would have been more successful...

Comment by TriSec on 12/04/2008 15:32:24
Bankruptcy isn't a bad thing. Or at least it wasn't until Congress changed the rules in 2005.

Our debt was wiped out; everything was set back to zero and we were given a "second chance." Paradoxically, that made it easier to get some credit (albeit at a higher interest rate) since we had no debt load and were a good credit risk.

Anyway....shouldn't a bankruptcy filing allow the company to continue to operate without the creditors nipping at their heels while they re-organize and consolidate debt and figure out a payment plan?

That's the way it's supposed to work, right?

Otherwise, if they don't file, the production line stops when they run out of money, the creditors seize all the assets and have a fire sale. (like when a store closes.)

There are REAL issues for the Big 3 going into Chapter 11 - much different than personal bankruptcy.

Particularly - it opens up "renegotiation" of ERISA protected funds (retirement, pensions, healthcare) and also collective bargaining agreements.

Those that are pushing for a re-org really are pushing for union-busting. And liquidation (shift from 11 to 7) is kinda likely.

I was SO against the $700 Billion bailout -- due to the language of the bill. But, depending on this bill, protecting companies (AND JOBS) that actually make THINGS seems a worthy federal expenditure.

My two cents....

Raine, another concern with bankruptcy for the Big 3 is getting a credit line. If they go through bankruptcy, there is a huge question if suppliers will be able to provide items that are needed to build autos.

Press release from the Inaugaral Committee:

In keeping with its pledge to make the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama one of the most open and accessible in history, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced today that, for the first time, the entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public so that more people than ever before will be able to witness the swearing-in of the President from a vantage point in sight of the Capitol.

The PIC has worked closely with officials from the District of Columbia government, the National Park Service, the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee (AFIC), and the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) to make space at this historic location available to members of the public who are unable to obtain tickets to the swearing-in. Those who come to witness the swearing-in on the Mall will be able to watch and listen to the ceremony on large screens that will be provided by the PIC along the Mall.

Indiana Nat Guard members suing KBR.
Sixteen members of the Indiana National Guard have filed suit against Houston-based military contractor KBR, seeking unspecified damages for alleged exposure to a toxic chemical at an Iraqi water treatment plant in 2003.

In their suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Evansville, Ind., the plaintiffs contend KBR knowingly allowed them to be exposed to sodium dichromate, a chemical used as an anti-corrosive but containing the carcinogen hexavalent chromium. The alleged exposure occurred while the guardsmen were providing security for KBR workers at the Qarmat Ali water plant in southern Iraq.

I just tried to get the name of someone my friend was REALLY hoping for... Maybe we can get that name bumped up (once I get the name) it was an awesome pick...

Salazaar is also on that short list, Scoop.

I am doing a little research on this... and it seems to me that it would not just be hormones, but also energy sources that the Agriculture post might have to deal with.

Interesting... my mind is opening to that cabinet post in ways that I had never dreamed.

As much as I hate this company, I have to give them for this.
Bank of America is particularly concerned about surface mining conducted through

mountain top removal in locations such as central Appalachia. We therefore will phase

out financing of companies whose predominant method of extracting coal is through

mountain top removal. While we acknowledge that surface mining is economically

efficient and creates jobs, it can be conducted in a way that minimizes environmental

impacts in certain geographies.

Now, THIS is something I can get behind. It is high time banks start investing in our environment instead of the practices that will tear it down.

Scoop, have you ever banked with BoA? Are they even a presence in New England? Or did you have some unfortunate issue with being anally raped by the entire board of directors the officers of the company and the senior executives?

What I'm saying is hate is awfully strong word. Especially for a company you have no dealings with.

I am thinking it would be nice for PE Obama to pick someone NOT in politics for at least ONE cabinet position... Ag Sec would be a great choice. The man understands Agriculture and American eating habits.

And a LOT more.

No dealings? I was with Fleet when the merger went through! Needelss to say, that clusterfuck was the reason I switched my account over to Citizens Bank. They have a huge presence up this way b/c of Fleet; in fact they had to spin off Sovereign Bank as a result of that merger.

Oh another thing about BoA reevaluating financing MTRM. A lot of banks have been taking a critical look at the environmental impact of the practices of potential customers. HSBC (where I used to work) has a very strong commitment to these lending practices. There was a thing on "Marketplace" on the public radio mosheen about this a while back.

Ahh thanks, I stand corrected. I thought that NE was one of the places they wern't. Still, I stand by hate as a rather strong word. The reason I'm thinking about switching banks has more to do with the size of BoA. They are a perfect example of Financiers Gone Wild. They have purchased in the past year the troubled mortgage company CountryWide, the troubled investment bank Merill Lynch. Who knows what troubled institution they will procure next.

I'm not a customer by choice, when I first moved here, the Missus and I opened an account with Barnett Bank. Barnett merged with Sovran then Sovran merged with BoA. Thankfully, I've had no issues in any of the mergers. As far as customer service issues, they have been very good. Especially when I asked about getting the Missus off the account earlier this year. I just hadn't gotten around to it.

Bank of America swallowed the oldest bank in the US some years ago. BankBoston..founded 1789.

All gone, red Bank of America logos everywhere now.

For those not listening to WPHX it is changing to KNUV 1190 as of January 1.

-- I don't think it should be a problem for streaming. I have noticed over the past few weeks that sometimes the call letters have been WKNUV and have been wondering why. Now I know.

The signal is stronger according to Mike Newcolm... That is good news for the people in Pheonix.
