Under the Radar
Author: BobR    Date: 12/10/2008 13:29:11

I spent most of yesterday deep in the salt mine. As a result, I am felling somewhat disconnected from the news. Naturally, I've seen and read all the hubbub about Blagojevich trying to auction the IL Senate seat. In fact, that's just about all I've seen. It would seem to be a natural topic for today, but it's been so thoroughly covered that I didn't feel I could add much to the mix.

So instead, I thought I'd post some of the things that you might have missed yesterday amid all the noise circulating around the Illinois Governor's office. From the serious to the silly, here are some news tidbits that might have flown under your radar...

Bush tries to hold auto bailout hostage for FTA with Columbia... which favors companies over Colombians:
The U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Colombia is back in the spotlight, after President Bush allegedly conditioned his support for a bailout of the auto industry on the Democrats dropping their opposition to the FTA.

For months, the FTA has been tied up in Congress due to concerns over Colombia’s atrocious human rights record. Until now, the debate has centered on the many deaths suffered by labor leaders at the hands of government and paramilitary forces.

At the behest of U.S. organized labor, President-elect Barack Obama, during his Presidential campaign, repeatedly denounced the FTA suggesting that it would increase violence against Colombian labor activists.

Yet President Bush refuses to give up, despite a Colombian nationwide referendum on the FTA in 2005 that 98% of Colombians voted against.

Why is this so important? Human rights are more important than business. Just ask the ghosts in Argentina...

Human bones found in Argentina detention center confirm torture deaths:
Inside a once-secret detention center where political dissidents were tortured and killed during Argentina's dictatorship 25 years ago, forensic anthropologists have discovered a pit containing 10,000 bone fragments.

The first discovery of human remains inside a detention center confirms the testimonies of hundreds of survivors who have said for years that authorities tortured, killed and burned the bodies of political opponents, they said Tuesday.

"This scientifically confirms the testimonies of the detained," said Luis Fondebrider, a forensic anthropologist who helped uncover the remains inside the former detention center in La Plata known as Arana.

The 10,000 bone fragments were unearthed between February and September, and on Tuesday Fondebrider and his team announced that the remains were human. Now months of laboratory work is needed to determine even the minimum number of bodies that were destroyed in the pit.

Let's bring the International news a little closer to home. In fact, let's give it a place to set up shop. In the category of "jaw dropping":

Fed approves Chinese bank to operate in the U.S.:
The US Federal Reserve said Monday it had authorized China Construction Bank, a leading Chinese state bank, to operate in the United States.

The proposed New York City branch of CCB "would engage in wholesale deposit-taking, lending, trade finance, and other banking services," the Fed said in a statement.

The US central bank recalled that China Construction Bank Corporation ( CCB ) is 57.0 percent owned by the Chinese state, 19.7 percent by US banking group Bank of America and 5.7 percent by Temasek Holdings, a sovereign wealth fund owned by the government of Singapore. The remainder of the capital is publicly traded.

It's like a "hidden pictures" drawing. How many things can you find wrong with that story and the Fed's decision?....

Bush says Bible probably not "literally true":
US President George W. Bush said in an interview Monday that the Bible is "probably not" literally true and that a belief that God created the world is compatible with the theory of evolution.

"I think you can have both," Bush, who leaves office January 20, told ABC television, adding "You're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president."

Holy cow (pun intended)! Do the fundies know about this? Would they have supported him in 2000 and 2004 if they knew this? Wow....

And finally:

Larry Craig loses appeal:
Idaho Sen. Larry Craig has lost his latest attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in the Minneapolis airport men's room sex sting that effectively ended his Senate career.

A three-judge panel of the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected the Republican's bid to toss out his disorderly conduct conviction.

Craig still has the option of appealing to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and he said Tuesday he was considering future options.

Alrighty! Now that you're better informed, you can impress your friends and coworkers with these little newsbits - tasty, yet less fattening!

Wow, Blago wanted to shake down Warren Buffet.

You know, in hindsight, he could have simply asked for some of the bailout money. It would have been so much easier.

“Sarah Palin is absolutely the real deal,” he said. "With Sarah Palin, I don't want to say I felt a presence but she definitely had energy and she definitely went to work for American people, and it disgusts me on how often they try to bash her just for her sincerity..."

um no, people were NOT bashing her for her "sincerity", we were bashing her for her stupidity...

I would. It's not funny. It's dull. Please stop playing it every Christmas.

Course it can also be noted that the story is heavily reliant on it's time period and the experience of that time period. I am not of that time period.

Palin may have been the worst presidential candidate, but I still think Blago is a more blatantly corrupt governor. He has certainly hurt Democrats in general and Obama in particular more than Palin could ever dream of.
