Grand Obstruction Party
Author: Raine    Date: 12/11/2008 13:33:55

Never mind that the economy is in shambles, our climate is in distress, we have huge national security issues, Detroit in ready to implode, Gitmo is still open, we still torture, the government is listening to our phone calls, most of the constitution has been trashed... the list can go on. Never mind all of that. This is what the GOP is concerned about. It's time for them to look to the future by looking back at the past with its classic obstructionist ways:
Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, has just thrown a wrench into the Eric Holder hearings planned for early January, saying Holder's involvement in the Marc Rich pardon is a "red flag" and a "very serious matter."

Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) has been pushing for an early January hearing so that Holder could quickly be confirmed at Barack Obama's attorney general and be in his office by the Jan. 20 inauguration.

But Specter is already applying the brakes, indicating that Republicans are going to make a big deal out of Holder at the hearing. Specter said he sees no way in which the Holder hearings could happen before Jan. 26. Specter said he still needs to see thousands of pages of background documents and Holder's FBI background check.
Ah-- the Marc Rich Pardon. Not for nothing, but it wasn't Holder who gave the pardon, nor was he the Attorney General at the time. He was the Deputy AG, and while the entire situation was never something I was pleased with, it was fully within the Power of the President to pardon Rich. I expressed my opinion on Article II, Section 2 the other day.

Patrick Leahy, quickly and rightfully so, responded with a letter to the honorable Senator Specter. It's rather long, so I won't post it here, but it is good. Leahy also posted a backgrounder to the history of nominated Attorney Generals. In particular:
“It is my hope that the Judiciary Committee and the Senate will move promptly on the confirmation proceedings as to Judge Michael Mukasey…We need some time to study the man's record before you go to hearings. But we also need to move with deliberate speed.” Ranking Member Arlen Specter, September 17, 2007
I would like to remind Arlen, about Alberto "Torture Memo" Gonzales. How about Mike "not every wrong, or even every violation of the law, is a crime" Mukasey? Do I need to tell you about Samuel Alito or John Roberts on the Supreme Court? There were countless number of recess appointments and just plain awful awful picks from the last 8 years, such as Michael "Heck-of-a Job" Brownie. The Marc Rich pardon pales in comparison to the deeds and actions of these people. Most Americans have no idea of who he is.

It could be that the GOP is gearing up to *clinton* the Obama administration. Of that I have little doubt. Hopefully the Democrats will take a cue from Senator Leahy and fight back right from the start because we need to have an administration that is ready to go the day after Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. There is far too much work that must be done to get this country back on track, and this particular brand of partisan bickering from people like Arlen Specter is a perfect example of how we as a nation got to where we are.

The GOP has talked of trying to rebuild its party, but if they are going to do it by gridlocking the President-elect's selections, I think they will find that most of America will run further away from them and whatever it is they stand for. America is craving a government that works, rather than divide. The GOP has a chance to show that they are grown ups with the 111th Congress. Maybe Arlen Specter can start now by not getting in the way.

:peace: and
Raine

I actually responded to your post yesterday (this morning...whatever) scoop.

Comment by Raine on 12/11/2008 15:32:53
I can't believe this... a dark horse --for sure--- has taken the lead...

As the Obama transition team is filling out the rest of the President-elect's cabinet, one name that pops to the surface is Rep. Sanford Bishop.

The Georgia Democrat is believed to be in the running for Agriculture Secretary, and his staff readily admits that he wants the post -- though they say that no deal is "officially" in the works.

"The congressman would very much like to have the position if it is in fact offered," said Bishop's chief of staff Phyllis Hallmon. "But we have had no official interaction with the President-elect's staff."

Bishop's name has been floated in numerous agriculture publications, as well as (mostly local) press. The resume seems, generally, right. He was co-chairman of Obama's Georgia campaign and has served on the House agricultural subcommittee since 2006. He represents one of the largest agricultural districts in the nation and is considered a "go-to lawmaker for Southern farmers."

A blue dog Democrat, Bishop is also regarded as the most conservative African-American Democrat in Congress. He has long championed federal subsidies and price boosters for peanuts (understandably -- they're his home state's biggest product). There are various controversies in his past, including a bizarre bathroom incident on an airline flight in 2002, but nothing seemingly debilitating to his chances.

I did see that actually.. I agree with you in regards to teacher merit pay, and partly on modernization. Sure jobs are going to be lost due to technology. But I disagree with the idea that organized labor has not made efforts to modernize the movement. In particular, the NEA & UAW has bent over backwards to concede wage and pension increases, and have taken on some financial responsibility on paying health care premiums. (Note - the NEA in Rhode Island is a HUGE pain in the ass and usually concedes nothing without being forced into arbitration.. I'll admit that much)

As far as corruption in unions goes, it exists. Just like corruption in public office and corporate boardrooms exists. Greed is an unfortunate human condition and can strike us all when in any position of power. In fact corruption in labor is probably more amplified, since it's usually both more heinous and the corporate bosses don't mind spreading the word around in the media.

A Kansas-based church that has blamed deaths in Iraq on U.S. tolerance of homosexuality has asked Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire's office to approve a "Santa Claus will take you to Hell" message to display among other religious statements in the state capitol's third-floor hallway.

The Westboro Baptist Church's message would be near a Nativity set, three signs mocking atheism, and an atheist sign that celebrates the winter solstice, while also taking a shot at religion as "myth and superstition" that enslaves minds, all in the state Capitol's third-floor hallway.

So get this fact straight: you're feeling God's hate, Santa's to blame for the economy's fate, Santa Claus will take you to hell."

You, a GPS? Really? There are generations of Scouts spinning it their graves over that Tri. What about a map and compass? Orienteering is becoming a lost art. :wipes froth and spittle from mouth:

Why isn't Fred Phelps in The Dickipedia? I men he is huge self-aggrandizing, swaggering dick of the first order.

On another topic, should I go over to the newly opened Whole Foods and buy a chicken breast for like, twenty-five dollars?

Heya Raine, Mondo, BobR, Mala, & any other 4Fers who are heading to DC for the Inauguration,

Did you all notice that Momma's gig is Sunday night (and $75.00 for a chance to actually meet her :P). We are going to have to drive like the wind to make it to DC by 4:00 Sunday afternoon. When is everybody else arriving in DC? We also have tickets to the American Indian Inaugural Ball (Tuesday night/$110/each). I'm just wondering. Have I mentioned that my girlfriend is scared in crowds? I'm wondering if this is such a great idea... Just thinking outloud now.

Cheers,

mfaye

You wound me, sir. My father was once merit badge counselor for the Orienteering merit badge. I still own 3 compasses and the sectional charts for most of Eastern MA (as well as the ocean charts from my seafaring days).

GPS is great for roads with a base map, but most of them don't work worth a damn under a forest canopy. Compasses still do.

barnacles?... did he mean "albatross"?

asshat.

I actually responded to your post yesterday (this morning...whatever) scoop.

Well, that's kind of my point is that Unions should also think about restructuring themselves, some have, just like some auto industries have, but all of them need to do it. It shouldn't be this protection of jobs, but a protection of quality work. Union leaders view modernization as lost jobs, instead of new ones, since almost always another job to take care of the machines, which can be highly specified, and critical work.

If Unions would also spend the time to get it's blue collar workers through college, or a degree program, they can help lift those workers off the conveyor belt and into better living conditions.

Some BIG news that is going under the Radar.

Bipartisan Report: Rumsfeld Responsible for Detainee Abuse

Senate Committee Finds Officials Made Decisions That Led to Offenses Against Prisoners

A bipartisan Senate report released today says that former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other top Bush administration officials are directly responsible for abuses of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and charges that decisions by those officials led to serious offenses against prisoners in Iraq and elsewhere.

The Senate Armed Services Committee report accuses Rumsfeld and his deputies of being the principal architects of the plan to use harsh interrogation techniques on captured fighters and terrorism suspects, rejecting the Bush administration's contention that the policies originated lower down the command chain.

"The abuse of detainees in U.S. custody cannot simply be attributed to the actions of 'a few bad apples' acting on their own," the panel concludes. "The fact is that senior officials in the United States government solicited information on how to use aggressive techniques, redefined the law to create the appearance of their legality, and authorized their use against detainees."

The report, released by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and based on a nearly two-year investigation, said that both the policies and resulting controversies tarnished the reputation of the United States and undermined national security. "Those efforts damaged our ability to collect accurate intelligence that could save lives, strengthened the hand of our enemies, and compromised our moral authority," it said.

Yeah... check out the names of who released the report... That (other) One.

I think the GPS is the Devil's instrument. One more thing in the car to distract you from the road. You know what the most recent research into people's mutitasking abilities shows? We can't. At best we can do many things at once, all very badly.
