The Value of Work
Author: TriSec    Date: 01/03/2009 12:47:04

Good Morning!

Ah, before we get into today's entry, I'm looking at the ticker at the top of the page, so I simply MUST quote Mr. Nelson:

17 Days: The rain will come down and U shall have 2 choose. If U Believe, look 2 THE DAWN and U shall never loose!

OK, with that out of my system, lets move on.

2008 was tumultuous in more ways than one for many of us. The Family TriSec was also affected by the Bush economy, and as we struggled through the months, more often than not we got those lovely little notices from the bank, and in the weeks leading up to Christmas had to dip into some hard-won savings (which were expressly put aside for just this purpose) in order to get out of November with some solvency.

Like most of you out there, I'm getting pretty damn tired of living from paycheck to paycheck, so I finally thought I had to do something more. Mrs. TriSec, bless her heart, is still primarily a homemaker and care provider for young Javier. She does work a few hours in the public school system, but it was never enough to really make a difference.

In any case, the week before Thanksgiving, we were at the mall, and saw all the seasonal "help wanted" signs, so I took the plunge. Fortunately, the well-known local merchant L.L. Bean was also hiring, and they seemed a wee bit interested in my availability and rather extensive customer-service work history.

So, here I am. More fortunate than many, I'm working a job and a half in the Bush economy. It took a couple of weeks to take hold, but we ended 2008 in the black with a wee balance in our savings account. It's a good feeling. I'm hoping to stay on through the year, as we've got some credit cards that could be paid down, and the possibility of fixing my car, buying some brand names again at the supermarket, or traveling again are tempting me to stay on after the holidays wrap up. (LL Bean keeps it's seasonal employees through Valentine's Day, primarily for the return season.)

Working in retail has made me think about my "day" job in a new light. Most of you know who has signed my paycheck for the last 5 years. (ironic, innit?) Since we're a publicly-traded company now, I can't divulge too much without it being considered "insider information", but suffice to say that every day I'm responsible for millions of dollars of transactions, and I have to answer to hundreds of client concerns, all the while protecting our internal information, and especially our client's protected health information. (Nasdaq symbol: ATHN, you could look it up.)

Most days it's a pressure-cooker....and there's things going on internally that I'm really and truly not at liberty to divulge (see the publicly-traded disclaimer above).

I've been comparing the environments recently. Working retail, especially in this economy and during this past Christmas season, was an equally intense pressure cooker....for the store management types. I as the seasonal worker have found an "elegant simplicity" in doing what is essentially scut-work. I've been humping trash, schlepping empty boxes around the store, doing something called "Go-backs" (returning unbought merchandise to the racks) and generally being a jack of all trades during my hours at the store. It's actually been a revelation; there's no pressure on me, and I feel like my presence at the store has made a difference to the areas where I work. I've gotten a great amount of positive feedback from the cashiers, floor managers, and even the big boss, who has seen my in action a number of times.

It's enough of a jarring difference that Mrs. TriSec has noticed, and after my first week at the store, she even asked "Career Change?" I must admit, I'm sorely tempted, but given the nature of the retail beast, there's two drawbacks. Of course the biggest is it doesn't pay enough....and the second is purely personal. Even on a short shift, I come home utterly dog-tired. But to my way of thinking, that's a good thing. In the sports world, it's called "leaving everything on the field". It's certainly gotten me noticed by the store management...so I think things are looking good for staying on and having a decent 2009.

It's funny...up until November 2008, it felt like a titanic struggle just to stay afloat. I can't put my finger on it, but since then it seems like a tremendous weight has been lifted from all of us, and despite the many challenges that we still face individually and as a nation, it's OK to have a little hope and positive thoughts for the new year.

17 days. This weekend might be Three Kings, but I don't get my gift until noon on January 20th.

God Bless TriSec. Follow you're heart. I got out of my high pressure, but well paying, job just in the nick of time. Now I too work in retail and have moved up from cashier to supervisor to head supervisor.

Its really not hard, if you have a good work ethic like I feel that I do. Even though I don't love the work, my personality won't let me slack at it...... so I get some notice. I don't want to do it for the rest of my life though.

Mornin' Tri & Velveeta,

Every time I start to complain about my job, I think about that woman at some Bush event who told dubya that she was working three jobs (the point was that she couldn't believe that she HAD to work three jobs just to make ends meet), but dubya in all his obtuseness, praised her as being uniquely American. Where else but America, could people even get three jobs? What a moron! I saw "Slumdog Millionaire" yesterday and I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. It is a feel good love story with many interesting shots and a view into the life of the ultra poor in Mumbai/Bombay. Just my two cents for this Saturday morning. Thanks and here's wishing you all a very happy and rewarding 2009!

Cheers,

mfaye

morning... :coffee:

As most of you know, I too work 1.5 jobs to maintain a decent standard of living. The credit cards are all cancelled and I am on a CCCS repayment plan. I've been a little despondent about it, wondering if I'll ever be able to get back to just one job, and I looked at the most recent statement from CCCS (which I usually ignore).

The interest rate on the highest one is just 10%, I've paid off more than $6000 in debt since I started the program. All of this credit card debt will be paid off in another 3 years (it seems like forever). I would recommend the program to anyone, because even though it costs a fee every month, the savings in the lowered interest rates more than makes up for it.

My alimony will be done in 1.5 years at most, and I'll pay off the loan against my 401k in a year. Sometimes those finish lines seem so far away, but as I chip away at the debt, I feel the weight on my shoulders getting lighter every month.

So for now I'll do my 1.5 jobs, cleaning the toilets at the end of the night as pennance for living beyond my means for so many years, and keep my eye on the prize: living debt free.

Good afternoon everyone.

It seems like financially these days I am on the same boat as everyone else. I think my problems really hit me because when I was re-hired in early 2006 after my layoff, I was making less money than I did before and because of my expenses including medical I ended up using the credit cards more because of being short on cash and it has taken me a while to give up some of the things that I used to enjoy because they were becoming much too expensive. Well, I hope to go through some of my stuff to sell on eBay which means finally getting my apartment in order and maybe I can see what else I can do to bring in some extra income. It looks like it's going to be a tough couple of years unless the economy turns around.

Afternoon all. I've been reading the new Pelacanos novel for most of my waking hours today. I'm taking a lil break before I dive into the Study Bunker for a couple of hours.

Speaking of grim economic news, it is hitting the jazz scene as well.

Jazz musicians look to federal budget for bailout support

Washington, D.C. (CNN)

In light of the recent downturn in the American economy, the nation's jazz musicians have joined the long line of lobby groups looking to Washington for support as the economy slides into a deepening recession.

The jazz industry is asking Washington for a bailout package and major subsidies on par with that of the auto sector.

Jazz musicians also want access to credit and tax breaks to stimulate investment and help the development of new recording and performance opportunities.

"This recession has really got me dragged, you dig?" says Luther "Hip Bones" Jones III, a New York City saxophonist and a cornerstone of the little known Wall Street Avant-Garde jazz scene.

"I mean, now that gigs aren't flowin' on the scene, I actually have to get up before noon and find a way to make some bread!"

Similarly, Jones' associate Willie "Fat Cheeks" Hughes comments that with the economy in near chaos, the demand for his jazz bagpipe skills has waned considerably. Hughes also comments that with a sluggish economic situation, he will soon have to find another girlfriend or else face certain homelessness.

While this crisis has been brewing for some time, a recent spike in the number of trombonists delivering pizzas in New York 's Greenwich Village has recently brought this dire situation to the public's attention.

Last week, however, jazz advocate Wynton Marsalis met with President George W. Bush and the White House economic team to discuss the worsening situation for America 's jazz artists and a possible stimulus package.

Marsalis was quoted as saying: "I think it's important for the government to deal with this music, and understand that our musical recession has actually been worsening since the demise of New York 's 52nd Street scene in the early 50's and thanks to the racket these kids call 'Hip Hop'. They really should have seen this coming. Once Miles went electric, it's all been downhill." Marsalis continued, "I think that a strong monetary stimulus package and mandatory listening to Duke Ellington records should encourage a healthy economic recovery in the face of adversity."

President Bush responded to these comments by replying that: "Mr. Margolis has a very good point here. The country will be in dire straits if we lose our "jazzy" beats. I mean, personally, I always enjoy a little Kenny G in the evening while I try to woo the First Lady."

Bush also commented that a global consensus on the state of the jazz economy will have to be reached. "The way things stand, America 's jazz artists just can' compete with the lower paid jazz artists currently flooding the market from China ."

In related news: America 's Blues musicians report an increase in depressing lyrics. "Indicates a reflection of the times" claims one downtrodden guitarist whose wife recently left him and whose dog has died.

Yup, I hate the bastard and his henchmen even more. They should all fry for war crimes. And that includes the 77 traitorous Senators that enabled him.

Falcons lose to AZ... :(

As to this game, AZ got two of their touchdowns on Atlanta mistakes, not on anything great that they did. It was a close well-fought game.

In the big picture, Atlanta did way better than expected. Next season looks VERY promising...

Ya know Trojan, I am trying not to take offense at this really ill-informed comment. If you remember there are 41 Republicans. If they fillibuster, and they will because they are dicks, how is that Harry Reid being cowardly? Hmmm? If they can't get a cloture vote there ain't much they can do.

Call them on it. MAKE them filibuster. Make them stand up like idiots supporting someone who has a good chance of going to jail anyway so all can see. It's not like there's anything important that needs to be done.

It's really not a Tort thing - if you want a great site to see ALL of the submissions to the Courts go to this site.

Coleman has yet to file a new petition, order to show cause or any other motion - but it's coming...

Evening, folks! Back from the store, and an afternoon with the Three Kings...

Regarding the filibuster...give this another read.

There's many GOPers that will continue to march in lockstep, yes....but there are also a handful that never really did and will now become key once freed from the Rovian machinations of the Bush White House.

It may take a while, but things could be different in the next congress, and the mere suggestion is enough to hope for right now.

That's a nice idea, but it is the same sort of scorched earth horseshit the the swollen, bleeding hemorrhoids of the GOP have been pulling for the past 20 or so years. It is the kinda thing that has brought the political process in this country to a stand still. Just my two cents.

Comment by trojanrabbit on 01/04/2009 03:08:51
Not really. My idea of scorched earth would be to threaten then invoke the nuclear option as the Republicans had threatened time and time again. No one is saying they can't filibuster.

I should point out that when the math was against hillary, she didn't drop out either...so math has little meaning in elections.
