Good Morning.

We'll ponder a different kind of veteran today - an executive leader.

It has never been a requirement to have military service in order to serve as President of the United States. It is no automatic guarantee of good leadership. Some Presidents with military service have been great and thoughtful elected officials, whereas others have not. Our last President with any kind of service was George W. Bush, but as we remember - he served in the National Guard during Vietnam, and quite likely deserted. In our history, 29 Presidents have had military service in their lifetime.

But beyond that, consider the rarest of the rare. As President, whoever holds the office is also Commander-In-Chief of the entire United States military. Only one man in our history has actually led combat troops in that role while in office, Of course, it was George Washington.

George Washington arrived at Cumberland in October 1794 as President and as leader of the troops in order to put down the citizens’ revolt known as the Whiskey Rebellion. It was the first and only time that a sitting President has led troops into battle.

Washington had written that “the people in the Western Counties of this State have got very much alarmed at the approach of the Army” but still needed “coercion” to make them “submit” to the law.

Cumberland, Md., was the rendezvous for the militia from Maryland and Virginia; the Pennsylvania and New Jersey militia were to rendezvous at Bedford, Pa.

Washington’s arrival in Cumberland was recorded by Dr. Robert Wellford of Fredericksburg:

“Between eleven & twelve o’clock this day arrived the President of the United States escorted into the town & to Head Quarters near the Fort by three troops of light dragoons, every man of whom cheerfully left ye encampment to pay the President a compliment, every regiment was drawn up in excellent order to receive him, & as he passed the line of Infantry he deliberately bowed to every officer individually. The Artillery at the same time announced his arrival”

George Washington himself wrote that he reviewed the troops, and then was well lodged, & civilly entertained at the home of Major Lynn:

“After an early breakfast we set out for Cumberland—and about 11 O’clock arrived there. Three miles from the Town I was met by a party of Horse under the command of Major Lewis (my Nephew) and by Brigr. Genl. Smith of the Maryland line, who Escorted me to the Camp; where, finding all the Troops under Arms, I passed along the line of the Army; & was conducted to a house the residence of Major Lynn of the Maryland line (an old Continental Officer) where I was well lodged, & civilly entertained.”

Considering our executive and military leadership, and the great lengths most politicians now go to in order to avoid any sort of responsibility, the actions of President Zelenskyy of Ukraine seem even more extraordinary.

KYIV, Ukraine — As Russian troops lay siege to Kyiv, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, again appeared on camera on Saturday to furnish proof of his continued presence in his country’s capital, praise his outgunned and outmanned military and beseech Western countries for more support.

“We have withstood and successfully repelled enemy attacks,” Mr. Zelensky said in a video posted around noon local time, the latest of several speeches he has released. “The fighting continues in many cities and districts of our state, but we know that we protect the country, the land, the future of children.”

He said the Ukrainian army still controlled the capital and key cities nearby.

“The occupiers wanted to put a blockade on the seat of our state’s power and set up their puppets here,” he said.

“We messed up their plans, they did not gain any advantage over us,” he added in Ukrainian. “The enemy used everything against us: missiles, fighters, drones, artillery, armored vehicles, saboteurs, landing. The occupiers are hitting residential areas using jet artillery, trying to destroy energy facilities. They have very vile tactics.”

Mr. Zelensky again asked the European Union for progress toward making Ukraine a member. The European Union has offered the country financial assistance and has slapped sanctions on top Russian officials, banks and businesses in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

“The people of Ukraine have already deserved and have the right to become a member of the European Union,” he said.

And he urged Ukrainians at home and abroad to fight for their country.

“Every Ukrainian needs to remember one thing — if you can stop and destroy the occupiers — do it!” he said. “Anyone who can return to Ukraine, come back to defend Ukraine.”

He added: “Everyone can defend Ukraine from abroad, do it ceaselessly, persistently and together. All friends of Ukraine who want to join the defense — come. We will give you a weapon.”

Unfortunately, the widely-circulated photo of the President in a military uniform seems to be out-of-context and possibly over a year old, but it detracts not from what true leadership looks like.

And a bonus click right out of the gate. You may have heard that the "Mriya" was destroyed. It was the largest airplane in the world, and the pride of Ukrainian Aviation. This rarely flew to the United States, so I never had a chance to see it in action.

The largest plane in the world – Ukraine's Antonov-225 cargo plane – was destroyed by Russian strikes outside Kyiv on the fourth day of Moscow's invasion, Ukraine's state-owned Ukroboronprom group said Sunday.

"Russian invaders destroyed the flagship of the Ukrainian aviation, the AN-225" at the Antonov airport in Gostomel near Kyiv, the group said in a statement.

The aircraft was unique to the world, at 84 meters long (276 feet) it could transport up to 250 metric tons (551,000 pounds) of cargo at a speed of up to 850 kilometers per hour (528 mph).

It had been named "Mriya", which means "dream" in Ukrainian.

"This was the world's largest aircraft, AN-225 'Mriya'," Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted Sunday.

"Russia may have destroyed our 'Mriya'. But they will never be able to destroy our dream of a strong, free and democratic European state. We shall prevail!", he added.

Mornin' all..

I heard the Russians dropped another thermobaric bomb today.. and despite Lukashenko's claim that Belarussian forces wouldn't be involved they're now marching toward Kyiv.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I hope that everyone is well here.

My hope is that there will be some push to have a ceasefire. However, I think the Putin is resolved to create a new Russian empire. It may be up to the Russian people to stop his ambitions.
