A Toast
Author: BobR    Date: 01/14/2009 13:07:22

As we look down the ever diminishing remainder of the Bush Presidency, the tendency to look back becomes irresistible. But rather than focus strictly on the past, let's balance it with the promised change soon to come our way. Let's raise our glasses and toast the passing of the old ways and the impending arrival of the new ways:

Here's to all people being judged by the content of their character, instead of the color of their skin... or their political label... or their religious belief (or lack thereof)...

Here's to the demise of Freedom Fries, hatred of France, the Axis of Evil, and xenophobia in general, and welcome to diplomacy and rationality...

Here's to the demise of black and white, and welcome to shades of gray...

Here's to the demise of bootstraps and punishing the poor for events outside of their control, and welcome to helping one's Fellow Man and punishing the corrupt...

Here's to the demise of ignorance and obfuscation from the White House, and welcome to intelligence and transparency...

Here's to the demise of fractured sentences, tortured syntax, mispronunciations, and verbal constipation, and welcome to eloquence and erudition...

Here's to the demise of a government that ignores the needy and helps its wealthy friends, and hello to a government that works for ALL of its citizens and the betterment of the country...

Here's to the demise of shocked outrage and welcome to cautious optimism...

Here's to the Constitution, saved to guide our country once more...

Here's to the passing of a Cold War mentality, with its secret prisons, renditions and torture, and welcome to a foreign policy that doesn't stray from the Geneva Conventions...

Here's to worldwide respect, once again regained...

Here's to self-respect as an American, once again retained...

Here's to the American flag - in our hearts reclaimed...

And here's to us who remain... nightmares of midnight crossings into Canada or Venezuela fading as dreams do when the morning light burns away their memories with the promise of a new day.

Here's to us.

Cheers...

Morning and Here, Here

on another note - still waiting to see if my VRE ticket comes through

Comment by TriSec on 01/14/2009 13:24:01
Well, I like toast.

:martini: <-- one of many to be had.

I never understood the right's hatred of France. Somewhere in TriSec's head is a blog about that. To my way of thinking, the bottom line is without France, there is no United States, but I digress.

Weather update for the 20th from weather.com

Jan 20

Partly Cloudy / Wind

High: 35°

Low: 25°

Chance of Precipatation: 10%

So far I have heard everything from 40-28 for that day

Comment by TriSec on 01/14/2009 13:36:40
Well, I don't mind the cold, and I'll even take a wee bit of wind. (Just as long as it's not force 6 on the Beaufort scale...)

This is the thing that's leaping out to me, and it's been constant:

Chance of Precipatation: 10%

There's cold, then there's cold and wet.

Comment by wickedpam on 01/14/2009 13:43:41
As far as I know there's always a chance of precipatation. But then again it been so freaking dry I get shock from everything I touch

Morning guys!

I got an email this morning from our local 4Obama group with a really great offer on transportation to/from DC.. And that combined with the overwhelming urge to just let things go as they may is causing me to seriously rethink my decision not to go..

Exactly Jim. Thank you.

People who created a God Worship towards Obama, thinking he's a Liberal will be disappointed.

Not sure. . .

My parents are handling it pretty well. He's made some phone calls to hopefully pick up some things here and there.

Thanks everybody.

He was installing glass at a place called "Plymouth Glass & Mirror."

It's a small company and he was one of the newer peeps. . .been there a year or so.

That was after he had to get rid of his general contracting business.

Oi. the poor guy.

*ush likely lost money too...
President George W. Bush is confident that he and first lady Laura Bush have lost money in the economic crisis, but that they won't find out until after he leaves office how much their financial accounts have lost.

In an interview with CNN's Larry King on Tuesday, the president said his personal assets are in a blind trust and that the last time he talked with the trustees was eight years ago. Bush said he has "no earthly idea" how much he and his wife have lost in the market slump but said he's confident that they had lost some.

There's going to be a massive wave of elderly Cubans dying of relief if that happens. I personally know of several whose sole mission in life it to outlive Castro.

How long you think he'd be down there?

It's driving distance, so it's not like it's completely undoable.

I missed this story.

Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- KBR Inc. and its former parent, Halliburton Co., filed a request in court to tell a jury that the U.S. Army and Iraqi terrorists are responsible for deaths and injuries to company truck drivers in Iraq in 2004.

Families of the dead and injured drivers claim in a federal lawsuit that KBR and Halliburton officials sent unarmed civilians into active-combat zones in April 2004 knowing they would be attacked and possibly killed. The contractors and their families say Houston-based KBR misrepresented the risk and should be held accountable.

The military isn’t a party to the lawsuit, and the action by Halliburton and KBR won’t force the army to defend its conduct in court. The companies are using a Texas law that lets juries consider whether others bear responsibility for some of a victim’s injuries, even if those third parties aren’t named in the lawsuit.

Where is he now?

Anyway - there's a guy that comes into the restaurant nearly every night who's a manager for a local Binswanger Glass. I can ask him if they're hiring or could use temporary help.

Would you Bobber? That would be fantastic.
