A Toast
Author: BobR    Date: 01/14/2009 13:07:22

As we look down the ever diminishing remainder of the Bush Presidency, the tendency to look back becomes irresistible. But rather than focus strictly on the past, let's balance it with the promised change soon to come our way. Let's raise our glasses and toast the passing of the old ways and the impending arrival of the new ways:

Here's to all people being judged by the content of their character, instead of the color of their skin... or their political label... or their religious belief (or lack thereof)...

Here's to the demise of Freedom Fries, hatred of France, the Axis of Evil, and xenophobia in general, and welcome to diplomacy and rationality...

Here's to the demise of black and white, and welcome to shades of gray...

Here's to the demise of bootstraps and punishing the poor for events outside of their control, and welcome to helping one's Fellow Man and punishing the corrupt...

Here's to the demise of ignorance and obfuscation from the White House, and welcome to intelligence and transparency...

Here's to the demise of fractured sentences, tortured syntax, mispronunciations, and verbal constipation, and welcome to eloquence and erudition...

Here's to the demise of a government that ignores the needy and helps its wealthy friends, and hello to a government that works for ALL of its citizens and the betterment of the country...

Here's to the demise of shocked outrage and welcome to cautious optimism...

Here's to the Constitution, saved to guide our country once more...

Here's to the passing of a Cold War mentality, with its secret prisons, renditions and torture, and welcome to a foreign policy that doesn't stray from the Geneva Conventions...

Here's to worldwide respect, once again regained...

Here's to self-respect as an American, once again retained...

Here's to the American flag - in our hearts reclaimed...

And here's to us who remain... nightmares of midnight crossings into Canada or Venezuela fading as dreams do when the morning light burns away their memories with the promise of a new day.

Here's to us.

Cheers...

Morning and Here, Here

on another note - still waiting to see if my VRE ticket comes through

Comment by TriSec on 01/14/2009 13:24:01
Well, I like toast.

:martini: <-- one of many to be had.

I never understood the right's hatred of France. Somewhere in TriSec's head is a blog about that. To my way of thinking, the bottom line is without France, there is no United States, but I digress.

Weather update for the 20th from weather.com

Jan 20

Partly Cloudy / Wind

High: 35°

Low: 25°

Chance of Precipatation: 10%

So far I have heard everything from 40-28 for that day

Comment by TriSec on 01/14/2009 13:36:40
Well, I don't mind the cold, and I'll even take a wee bit of wind. (Just as long as it's not force 6 on the Beaufort scale...)

This is the thing that's leaping out to me, and it's been constant:

Chance of Precipatation: 10%

There's cold, then there's cold and wet.

Comment by wickedpam on 01/14/2009 13:43:41
As far as I know there's always a chance of precipatation. But then again it been so freaking dry I get shock from everything I touch

Morning guys!

I got an email this morning from our local 4Obama group with a really great offer on transportation to/from DC.. And that combined with the overwhelming urge to just let things go as they may is causing me to seriously rethink my decision not to go..

*ush likely lost money too...
President George W. Bush is confident that he and first lady Laura Bush have lost money in the economic crisis, but that they won't find out until after he leaves office how much their financial accounts have lost.

In an interview with CNN's Larry King on Tuesday, the president said his personal assets are in a blind trust and that the last time he talked with the trustees was eight years ago. Bush said he has "no earthly idea" how much he and his wife have lost in the market slump but said he's confident that they had lost some.

How long you think he'd be down there?

It's driving distance, so it's not like it's completely undoable.

Comment by Raine on 01/14/2009 15:59:02
I missed this story.

Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- KBR Inc. and its former parent, Halliburton Co., filed a request in court to tell a jury that the U.S. Army and Iraqi terrorists are responsible for deaths and injuries to company truck drivers in Iraq in 2004.

Families of the dead and injured drivers claim in a federal lawsuit that KBR and Halliburton officials sent unarmed civilians into active-combat zones in April 2004 knowing they would be attacked and possibly killed. The contractors and their families say Houston-based KBR misrepresented the risk and should be held accountable.

The military isn’t a party to the lawsuit, and the action by Halliburton and KBR won’t force the army to defend its conduct in court. The companies are using a Texas law that lets juries consider whether others bear responsibility for some of a victim’s injuries, even if those third parties aren’t named in the lawsuit.

Excellent Post BobR,

I may use a few of your toasts on Inaugural night (I am going to an Inaugural Ball here in Tulsa that night :P). But here's my all time favorite toast (from my great late grandma "Gee Gee" : "Here's to life, ain't it grand, just got divorced from my old man, had to laugh at the judge's decision, cause he gave him the kids and ain't none of 'em hissin." It sounds much better spoken, but I still love it, you really had to know my grandmother - she was a tiny irish spitfire, loved her cigs and her bourbon - died of emphysema too young :(

Cheers,

mfaye

there is something else to be said about the economic boom DC will be getting from this too...

There is a part of me that does believe that in order to help the economy, people need to spend money, and I am not talking about people like us here on this blog... I am talking about people WITH money. They are the ones hoarding it.

Let them spend it... it is helping many people work even if it is for just a few days. I hope that did not sound too *let them eat cake* it isn't meant to sound that way at all.

DC is going to reap some pretty big benefits from this inaugeration long and short term.

And as most analysts have noted, the scenarios in 24 have never happened in the real world. There has never been a case when a suspect had information on an event that was about to happen. Clinton was able to foil the millennium plots without torturing anyone.

We are going to shoot for meeting Mala at around 8 am. At or around the starbucks near Le'Enfants plaza. (it's in the lobby of the Holiday inn across the street from the Dept of Education.. ) Cellies are going to be the Key here. I believe the triSec Familia will be doing the same.

If you give me a moment I can go and google map the info again. Where is your Bus dropping you off at?

Out of fashion yet still worn by clueless assholes. You wanna see a total and complete dick? A guy with a mullet and a goatee. Come to visit, I will be able to find at least one.

My preferred donut shoppe is on Old Georgetown Rd & Bradley (SCHLOZMAN!, the Schloz! sorry, I digress) in the Wildwood Shopping Centre. Not really close to where La Famiglia de TriSec will be ensconced. My recommendation is to stop by a 7-11, there will be Mo-Do donuts available there.

Can I say something? What is this obsession with L'Enfant Plaza? That is going to be ground zero for getting onto the Mall. My suggestion since I spent a lot of time riding the Metro hither and thither is this. Get off at Federal Triangle or Metro Center and walk down from the north. I think you might find a slightly thinner crowd than at Smithsonian or L'Enfant. I would even suggest getting off at Farragut West and hoofing down 17th St. That way you walk by Old Executive Office Building which is worth checking out. Then you can cut across the east end of Constitution Gardens by the Washington Monument then onto the Mall proper. I'm just sayin... Or get off at McPherson Square walk down 15th St. This would give a wonderful opportunity to make obscene gestures at the Bush occupied White House one last time since it would right there on your right hand side.

I mean if you meet at 8am you've got FOUR hours to perform your infiltration maneuver. You might as well make it a little site seeing adventure too. Just my 2 cents don't mind me.

Comment by Raine on 01/14/2009 20:14:45
It's not an obsession, it's a lifestyle... :D

That said... this is where Mala's train is going to arrive. It is on both the green and Orange lines which accomodates Tri (green) and Us (orange).

The Smithsonian Station is closed for the day, as is Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter.

McPherson & Farragut West were mentioned cause they are on the Orange/Blue line. Yeah, the Famglia de TriSec would need to change trains @ Metro Center. Since Tri is going to be doing the advanced scouting, he might want to look into that. Like I said you do have nuttin but time if you all meet between 8 & 9. Plus I want you guys to look around the city I love like no other. :tears up:

I still think McPherson Sq. down 15th for the ceremonial last round of obscene gestures (great photo op for a certain youngling, nothing cuter than a kid flipping off the Bush infested White House a final time) as you pass on your way to the Mall would be grand fun.
