More Perfect a Union
Author: Raine    Date: 09/15/2022 12:32:43

Many of you may be aware that some of the largest Rail Unions have been preparing to go on strike. 99.5% percent of one of those unions voted to strike. The reasons why are multiple, so the nuance as to why is lost on many a print publication. This publication, however, gets the nuance and explains it well.

You can also read an excellent pro-union thread here. The details are pretty incredulous.
Roughly 115,000 railroad workers have been laboring without a contract for the past 3 years amid a standoff with the powerful carriers that dominate the U.S. rail industry. If the two sides don’t reach a new agreement by September 16, rail unions are allowed to authorize a national railroad strike, and carriers can launch a worker lock-out. Either action would likely paralyze the country’s already-burdened supply chain.

A Presidential Emergency Board (PEB) was appointed last month to draft a compromise proposal. With rail carriers reaping record profits, unions came to the bargaining table asking for wage and benefit increases that would reflect the sacrifice rail workers made to keep goods flowing during the pandemic, as well as high inflation that strained workers who have been without raises for nearly 3 years.

(snip)

Workers also sought expanded health care benefits, including coverage for family members in need of autism services, and expanded coverage for hearing loss treatment. While the PEB recommended the carriers meet those demands, they also proposed lifting the current 15% cap on the percentage of income workers could have to pay toward health care. Labor advocates noted that lifting this cap will likely eat into the proposed wage increases and open the door for carriers to shift the burden of health care costs to workers.
Basically, this strike would be a major blow to the economy and all sorts of other things.

This morning, the White House announced a tentative deal to avoid a strike.
The last-minute deal avoids massive disruptions to the flow of key goods and commodities around the country. About 40% of the nation’s long-distance trade is moved by rail. If the unions had gone on strike, more than 7,000 trains would have been idled, costing up to an estimated $2 billion per day.

(snip)

The new contracts provide rail employees with a 24% wage increase during the five-year period from 2020 through 2024, including immediate average payouts of $11,000 upon ratification, according to the Association of American Railroads. All tentative agreements are subject to ratification by the unions’ membership.

Tentative agreements have been reached with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, which collectively represent approximately 60,000 employees, the Association of American Railroads said in a press release.
This is what the President promised when he said he supported Unions. They negotiated in good faith and it looks like workers, their families and ultimately communities will benefit in a real and tangible way. As POTUS says: "The middle class built America and unions built the middle class." That's a far cry from 1981, when another President fired over 11 thousand air traffic controllers for seeking many the things the rail workers were seeking.

This is so much better to see over the the governance of spite and grievance by the GOP. Today's spite fest is from texas, via Florida and it's shipping human beings to Martha's Vineyard. Seriously, it is all being done to own the libs. Well, those coastal elites were certainly owned!

This is why I am a proud Democrat. It's an easy choice.

Good morning, bloggers!!!

I think that the people being sent to different parts of the country should get their stories out on why they came to the U.S. Their stories can help counteract the narrative put out by DeSantis and Abbot.

Mornin' all!

First off, if DeSantis really wanted to make the point he meant to, he would've sent them to Nantucket.

Second, it's telling about who is more Christian that officials and residents on Martha's Vineyard welcomes EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE FOLKS with food, shelter and rest after they had been the victims of deliberate, mean-spirited pol... no wait I REFUSE to call this politics. This is trafficking. This is dehumanization.

This is incredible, Texas didn't give them a chance to claim asylum --- In other words, they were forced to be undocumented.
Chief Searle said local officials were not concerned about the immigration status of the migrants. “That can be decided by the federal authorities," he said. "Some of them haven’t checked in with immigration, some of them explained that they hadn’t checked in with immigration in Texas and that they wanted to so they wouldn’t get in trouble.

"Hopefully they can provide them some long term shelter and we can figure it out," he added.

“They came with folders with a pamphlet with our information,” said Beth Folcarelli, chief executive officer of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. “We don’t have refugee services, I had no idea about any of this. I only found out because one of them gave me their folder. Imagine being dropped in here knowing no one. Absolutely no one. It’s heartbreaking.”

I am glad it made the national news. The people of Martha's Vineyard have met "Florida's Refuse" magnificently.

Governor Ron DeSantis (F-FL), F for Fascist, is a waste of air and water.

"Gov. Ron DeSantis could learn a lesson from Massachusetts on what patriotism and liberty really look like if he weren’t so busy using humans as props in a cruel stunt to buoy his pathetic political aspirations," Massachusetts U.S. Senator Ed Markey wrote in a post on social media. "To those who’ve just landed: we gladly embrace you."

Dozens of migrants arrive on the Vineyard
