The prison at Guantanamo Bay has been the source of many sleepless nights for those in this country and the rest of the world who value freedom and fairness. It's bad enough that people have been held there for 7 years without a chance to refute the charges against them; no charges have been made. It's bad enough that they are viewed by some as "prisoners of war" when no declaration of war has been made, and there can be no definitive end to our efforts to control terrorism. It's bad enough that this is being done in our name and our only recourse all these years has been our ballot.
No, on top of all this is the common knowledge that it is no better than Abu Ghraib under Saddam Hussein.
Appearing on - of all places - the Daily Show, author Karen Greenberg describes how torture turned Gitmo into a version of Dante's Inferno:
We all remember the justifications, the various apologists trying to claim water-boarding wasn't torture, the memos leaking faster than a rusty rowboat. We remember the euphemistic term "enhanced interrogation techniques" which the previous administration tried to imprint on the mental consciousness of the country with mixed success.
Cheney - like a latter-day Rasputin - is still out there trying to cover his tracks, terrorize the nation, and - in general - justify his bloody past. By now most of you have heard or seen his latest prognostications:

"Make this prison Geneva Convention-ish," Stewart suggested.
"It was an 'ish' situation," agreed Greenberg, "and that does not compute for the military. ... Their idea is ... 'We know how to follow rules, that's our job, we're professionals. We don't, you know, improvise when it comes to the law.'"
"When does the word come down," Stewart asked, "that, 'Hey, you know what? We're actually not going to make it even Geneva Convention-ish. That was the honeymoon period. Now, let's make it more Dante's Inferno-ish.'"
Greenberg replied that starting in mid-February 2002, "they bring in a whole other crew" of higher-ranked officers "and it becomes their show. And they're the 'interrogation' military unit, and they take over."

Busy. I have subbed a few days this week, and I had an interview for a long term sub position yesterday. (I should know if I have the position sometime early next week.) I also have a weekend job which is keeping me busy.
Currently, I am waiting for the schools to post positions for the new school year but I think I will have something. I am also taking a night class to help turn my reciprocal teaching certificate to a two year provisional certificate. (I will move up to the next certificate after that.)

I was going to ask you if you were using IE... It locks up a lot for Bob. I think he now uses Google Chrome for the FB.

Good morning everyone. It was a very busy night in the salt mine since I was live most of the evening and had to cut down a delayed Women's Basketball game to 2 hours on the fly. And then I didn't get home until 2 AM so I was pretty pooped.

Nope, but I did get some feedback from people I know there as to why it happened. Someone downrated a bunch of my comments for no reason yesterday, so I emailed kos' #2 in charge about it (which is what you're supposed to do). Literally a couple seconds later, some new user uprates everything that got downrated. I didn't put it together at the time, but I think one of those idiots made a sockpuppet and made it look like I was uprating my own comments with a second account, and that triggered the website's autoban. Either that, or it was the dude I was defending because he got banned earlier in the day.
Oh and they also told me that all the idiots I was having 'intense negotiations' with were gloating over my account getting locked.

It's the new version of Windows, expected for release next year. They actually have a large-scale public beta going on now where you can download it for free and use it for free until at least August (maybe longer if the beta is extended). First time I think that MS has done something like this.

DOS was still fairly mainstream until Windows 95 was released, and even then it was still a usable platform at least until Windows 98 came out.
Edit: Now that I think about it, the real death of DOS was 32-bit operating systems like Windows NT/2000. They used a modified version IBM's OS/2 (which was basically a 16/32-bit version of DOS with a GUI on top of it) as the underpinnings of NT, and XP expanded on that by including innovations that were built into the various flavors of Linux.
Edit: Now that I think about it, the real death of DOS was 32-bit operating systems like Windows NT/2000. They used a modified version IBM's OS/2 (which was basically a 16/32-bit version of DOS with a GUI on top of it) as the underpinnings of NT, and XP expanded on that by including innovations that were built into the various flavors of Linux.

Random, did I start yelling in your ear about open source? No, I just pointed out that you don't need to do things from a command line in Linux if you don't want to. As far as Linux not getting "big" there is a huge installed base of it in things you aren't even thinking about. Like PBX systems, my DVD player runs on Linux. The reason I know it does is pretty obvious, when it loads a DVD I will get the "root" on the LCD display. Root is the uber directory in a Linux/Unix OS. Its out there Random everywhere, you just don't know about.

I've got a Linux box in the other room, command line, schcommand line. It has a spiffy x-windows interface that works very well, thank you. For many a year DOS was the biggest OS in the biz and it is a crappy command line interface.
Hm...so when did DOS stop being so big...was that with the introduction of Windows and a GUI system.
Well, even with your x-windows Linux will never get big. Sorry...give up that dream.

TiVos run Linux. So does the spectrum analyzer I use at work almost every day. It's very disconcerting to see an oscilloscope with a Windows XP screen on boot up.
