A New Title for TFG

Good Morning.

I've got a new word for us all to learn today.

I've been a Master Mason for a year now. (William Sutton Lodge, Saugus MA) Never mind the bogus conspiracy theories and anti-Masonic propaganda you may be aware of - that's a discussion for another day.

As a part of my passing through the degrees, we have a number of oaths that are increasingly complex and instructive. The Master Mason Oath is rather lengthy, and it includes a bullet-point list of what kind of persons we should not allow to become Masons.

Among them are "persons underage, an old man in his dotage, a Libertine, or an Atheist".

Taking the Oath and participating in the ceremony are two different things - and as a part of my role in one of the Junior Officer chairs, I have been tasked with "watching and learning".

So it was with "Libertine". Not a word we use in ordinary conversation, so I looked it up.

A libertine is a person devoid of most moral principles, a sense of responsibility, or sexual restraints, which they see as unnecessary or undesirable, and is especially someone who ignores or even spurns accepted morals and forms of behaviour observed by the larger society. Libertinism is described as an extreme form of hedonism. Libertines put value on physical pleasures, meaning those experienced through the senses. As a philosophy, libertinism gained new-found adherents in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, particularly in France and Great Britain. Notable among these were John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, and the Marquis de Sade.

Well, my jaw just about hit the floor. This is literally everything wrong with ol' number 45.

Since this is the Wiki, you might see a certain former president on the list of 'Rulers and Political Figures'. I DID THAT.

It's Wiki, though - I anticipate MAGATs or their allies eventually finding it and removing it - at which point I'll put him right back on the list.
