Impending Shutdown
Author: Raine    Date: 09/28/2023 13:02:53

Call it what it is: The GOP Shutdown. This is solely on them. While Social Security, Medicare, and Veteran benefits will continue, other programs will not.

The hardline radicals in Congress are doing everything they can to shut it all down.
An amendment approved by House Republicans on Wednesday reducing U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's salary to no more than $1 is expected to garner no widespread support as a government shutdown is just four days away. Experts told Newsweek the amendment shows the polarization in D.C.

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced the amendment, approved by voice vote as part of a Department of Defense (DoD) spending bill. Greene later said she was "proud" to invoke the Holman Rule that originated in 1876 and allows House members to propose amendments to appropriations bills that target specific programs or individuals, either by slashing pay or terminating them altogether.

The amendment was cheered on by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, one of the hardline conservatives who has gone toe to toe against Speaker Kevin McCarthy on behalf of a small but seemingly formidable group of Republicans who have repeatedly rejected the notion of approving a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government running as usual.

(snip)

After touting the passing of her amendment on social media, Greene reportedly told the Washington Examiner that she would still vote against the bill due to Ukraine aid—an issue of which she has been among the most vocal of all Republicans in Congress.
So what happens if the government shuts down? Aside from the federal workforce being furloughed, many other things will be disrupted.
And a shutdown would stop many other federal programs and services. The Biden administration said Monday that the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC, will stop operating one or two days into a shutdown, although Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said some states might be able to keep their programs running a bit longer than that.

WIC is a program intended to help low-income pregnant and postpartum women, as well as children under age 5, access healthier food. According to the Agriculture Department, more than 6 million people received WIC benefits each month in 2022, including about 39% of all U.S. infants.
While MTG plays games in DC, her district is bound to be affected by the shutdown. Georgia's 14th district has a median age of 38 years and a median household income of $54,634.

It also has a poverty rate of 13.5%. I imagine a good number of these people rely on WIC and SNAP. Medicaid only has funding for three months - and many of the employees will be furloughed. She and other radical MAGA's in congress are hurting the very people they supposedly serve and I don't think this will be forgotten at the polls come election time.

But hey, they are 'owning the libs', right?

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I fear that many in the GOP abandoned the concept of public service in favor of moves designed to shore up their political base. I do not see any easy way to avoid a shutdown. Perhaps some in the GOP will remember how the last shutdown impacted their numbers. So, ironically, political self-interest may be the only thing that prevents a shutdown -- if some members of Congress can think that farther into the future than the next news cycle

Sorry, gang. It's the time of year when I'm not even sure what day of the week it is anymore.

Another five weeks to go until the last cruise ship leaves Boston, then we can all heave a sigh of relief.
