From today's NYT The Lede Blog:
For the first time in 18 years, the Pentagon granted the news media access on Sunday night to cover the arrival of a coffin to Dover Air Force Base from overseas.

The coffin, draped in a flag and bearing the body of Air Force Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers of Hopewell, Va, was unloaded from a government aircraft by the military honor guard. Sergeant Myers, 30, was killed by an improvised explosive device near Helmand Province in Afghanistan on April 4, according to the Defense Department.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/04/06/us/06cofin.4801.jpg

Per this new policy, Family consent must be given. I know that Tuesday is usually the day on this blog that we set aside for our Soldiers in Peril, but today, I would like to thank Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers for his sacrifice, and his family for allowing us to bear witness to the horrible costs of this war.

Afghanistan may be considered by some to be the 'nobler' of these two fronts we are fighting, and I would tend to agree, but in the end, war is war -- and the sacrifices our soldiers make are a great loss for our country. These are our sisters and brothers, lovers, friends, fathers, daughter, sons and mothers. This is the first coffin we have seen in 18 years, and no doubt it will not be the last.

I hope that the sacrifice Staff Sgt. Myers made on the field as well as the sacrifice his family have made by allowing us to truly and finally see the cost of war will help to bring the battle in Afghanistan and Iraq to a quicker end.

Rest in Peace.

:peace: and
Raine

Mornin' guys! Another day, another damn thunderstorm forecast. :grumble:

Hopefully my landlord is home when my box of sensitive electronics is delivered, or the UPS dude is cogent enough to put a plastic bag over it.

And another excellent opening.. one that we've been waiting so many years to see, at least in this format.

Thanks for covering this story. We should never feel soldier-related stories are for Tuesday only.

It would be sad to see this canned; it's such an awesome machine to behold. I'm hoping to finally catch one in the air personally on the airshow circuit this summer...

But that said, there was nothing wrong with the F-15 "Eagle" either. for a Vietnam-era design, the plane is still invincible, and one has never been shot down in air-to-air combat. The rest of the world still can't touch it, and the latest Russian jets (90s vintage) are just now starting to approach parity.

That's kind of the point. We are building fighter jets to combat a foe that doesn't exist. Diplomacy is cheaper.

hmmm - come to think of it - I think I ended up in a truce with my bullies by like 5th grade (Matt Spink and Doug Wheeler) but there was a new in 6th, she was just mean, got people to start calling me pampers. Thing was her name was Pam too (Pam Sipple) - best revenge - people didn't like her so nothing ever stuck around for long and the boys kept calling her "the nipple"

Can someone tell me if I am reading this article wrong?

In particular THIS portion:
He and Gappour submitted the memo to the privilege team for clearance but the memo was redacted to just the title, leaving the president unable to read it. Stafford Smith included the redacted copy of the memo in his letter to illustrate the extent to which it had been censored. He described it as a "bizarre reality". "You, as commander in chief, are being denied access to material that would help prove that crimes have been committed by US personnel. This decision is being made by the very people who you command."

Is the pentagon denying access to information from the President???? :waiting:

I fought back. They stopped bothering me.

My parents always told me they would have my back as long as I NEVER threw the first punch.

7th & 8th grade were hell for me. For some reason, everything changed when I got to high school.

That's how I read it as well. How is it possible that the president is being denied this information?

I was always told to just ignore them and they go away - that doesn't even work with bees so I found the advice worthless.

Probably didn't help that I was a bit of a cryer in elementary school.

I was a cryer too. That was why they came after me.

Then dad taught me how to fight. Not sure how I feel about it in hindsight, but I did learn how to defend myself, and I stopped crying so much.

Never had the opportunity to learn to physically defend myself, parent dee-vorced when I was about 7. Wish I had, it would have helped.
