The GOP Congress has worked less than 20 days since July. On top of that, we’re still paying their full salary. That's a helluva gig if you can get it. And that doesn't even take into account that the Government has been
sorta shut down for 36 days.
I say sorta because this isn't really a shutdown. It's an à la carte menu rather than a fixed-price. That said, we are all feeling it. Well, unless you are a member of Congress or the administration. They get the Gatsby-themed restaurant. I have friends working without pay. I have friends who are on furlough without pay.
And yet, 20 days of work in 4 months is somehow acceptable to an awful lot of people. To me, it is not. It may seem insignificant, but way back in 2020, Bob treated us to a special birthday present. tickets to Elton John at Madison Square Garden.
You know what happened. Like most people, there was a Covid cancellation. Also, that year, a new low-cost airline opened up. It was very affordable, so we booked tickets to Europe. That was cancelled due to the pandemic. I don't need to remind you who was in office at the time, do I?
That said, we have been planning a trip to Italy this month. You can imagine what we're thinking. Good news? We are flying out of National to Montreal and transferring there to Europe. Air Canada. All we have to do is just get out of American airspace, and we're safe.
Simple, right?
Maybe not. We will find out today. The Federal Aviation Administration will begin cutting the number of flights in the "high traffic" parts of the country as the government shutdown grinds on and local airports have reported staffing shortages, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday.
“There is going to be a 10% reduction in capacity at 40 of our locations,” Duffy said. “This is about where’s the pressure and how do we alleviate the pressure.”
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the reduction in capacity, spurred by “fatigue” plaguing air traffic controllers, would start Friday.
Again, see the title of the blog? I'm fairly sure DCA won't see flight cuts even though they only worked for 20 days since July. Guess who's back in office...
Anyway, it's a good gig if you can get it.
