His Royal Highness

Leave it to His Majesty to remind us of our own history. Consider that it was his 6th Great Grandfather that started the entire affair.


During his speech to the Congress, King Charles quipped that if it wasn’t for us, we’d be speaking French now.

Of course a thinly-veiled reference to the Seven Years’ War…what we call the French and Indian War. A decade before the revolution, it settled the fate of Eastern North America. Would it be British, or would it be French?

I have visited the site of the decisive battle twice, at the Plains of Abraham below Quebec City. I have also been to Fort Beausejour in Nova Scotia. Fascinating stuff, indeed.

A rather young George Washington was serving in the militia at the time, and he turned out to be the lone bright light during a disastrous attack on Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh), which started him on the path to fame and fortune.

But let us consider something for a moment.

We won that one, as British subjects and colonists. It came at a great cost to the crown, and some have considered that war to be an un-named World War One.

The King, deciding that his loyal American subjects should pay for their own defence, started imposing increasingly draconian taxes and restrictions upon the colonies, all the while denying any sort of representation in Parliament. You can of course, follow the path to where it led.

In some ways, we have our own mad king today. Although it’s not defending any colony of sorts, he’s made a choice for a selective war of his own choosing, in order to defend oil and profits, and determine whether or not the Middle East will be British or French, so to speak.

It’s not going well right now. And like King George III, he’s decided to impose draconian taxes and restrictions upon his subjects. Not in the same way as a quarter millenium ago, mind you, but death by a thousand cuts.

Every good and decent thing that has been done by previous legislation is on the chopping block. A vast safety network, assistance programs of every kind, cultural institutions, you name it. All sacrificed on the altar of war.

What does that mean in the context of 2026? I daresay we are back to taxation without representation again. Did any of us vote for this? Do any of us have an actual say in what is going on in those august halls of Congress?

MAGAts certainly do. The Republicans march in lockstep to the President’s drum. If you are a racist, misogynist, middle-aged, white male – THIS IS THE STUFF!!!

But the rest of us? Nay, I am not represented in our present government by anyone. Not even the likes of Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren, or Katherine Clark.

Why?

Because they are absolutely powerless, spineless, or otherwise not inclined to do the people’s business, which is impeachment, removal, or any kind of Congressional oversight.

We have literally fought a war because the people were not represented in the legislative body of the time. We are right back at that point.

Do we still hold those truths to be self-evident?

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
