No Kodak Moments Author: RaineDate:05/14/2009 12:19:44
Yesterday, in a surprising move, the President made it clear that he is pushing to not have the next round of torture photos released. I found myself dismayed at this decision. It seems as though the President has truly flip-flopped on this issue.
So I am left wondering if I agree with his decision regarding these photos. Our president clearly stated that he worries this will whip up more anti-US sentiment in the Muslim world and empower Taliban and Al-Qaeda propaganda with new imagery, and that is an honorable concern. That said - he promised to be more transparent. So far he truly has been, as much as any modern president can be, and given our Security issues in America today. If this really will put our troops in harms way, I am more likely to trust this President for now.
I also have a feeling that these pictures might be far worse than we have been led to believe. Even the President's press secretary had trouble explaining why Obama changed his mind on releasing detainee photos. A lot of pundits and reporters are out there wondering why the President released the torture memos and not these photos. I think it is very important to remember that the president did not voluntarily release those memos - he did so at the court's ruling.
I believe this will happen again regarding these photos. It is actually politically savvy. The President has stated that he wants them released. However, there is a lot of push back from the military. Rightfully so? I don't know - I am not a military person. But politically, the best way to accomplish the release of these photos might be through the courts - even if that means going to the Supreme Court. So far the lower courts have sided with the ACLU on this issue. That is something else to remember - this is an ongoing court case.
Let it go to the Supreme Court. Then no one can say the President was out for vengeance, and no one can say he put our troops in further harm's way. Remember one thing - those pictures were taken when someone else was pResident. That person was the one who was responsible for the torture - and ultimately it was George Bush, Dick Cheney, Condi Rice, Don Rumsfeld, George Tenant, Colin Powell, Jay Bybee, John Yoo, Karl Rove, Alberto Gonzales (to name a few) - who put our troops in harm's way with this illegal war. They are the ones responsible for ALL of this.
The whole world knows about these photos. I don't really need to see them right at this moment. What I want ultimately isn't photos - it's prosecutions. Maybe - just maybe - that is what this is all about. Only time will tell.
That is what I said -- the President is letting this go to the courts.
That said -- those pictures get released, it taints a large portion of potential Jurors... just saying.

So wait a sec.. Obama's going back on this so that the potential jury pool that would potentially hear pending & future cases against Bush-era cronies who ordered this shit to happen don't become biased?
Interesting.. and it's a very reasonable explanation from a legal standpoint. I think I feel a bit less frustrated now.

It's just a thought Scoop.
I really see no benefit to releasing these photos at this point. -- and you know, I do believe they should be released.

The other issue regarding these photos-- Obama is not trying to cover anything up. The previous Administration did not want them released becuase they did not want to lose support for the war -- nd they wanted to cover their asses.

Hm...Random agrees with Raine.
(not often Random admits he agrees...mostly he only disagrees...)
"Hm. I wonder who got to him and what they offered."

Sigh....Raine....I hope you're right.
My first thought about Obama's flip flop was
"Hm. I wonder who got to him and what they offered."
That was my first thought too. It made no sense to me. I felt kinda upset about this reversal.
I liked what Momma said today about there being 2 ways of looking at this, the emotional and the logical. So much crap is coming down fast and furious right now -- I just really think that this might have been --politically the smart move.
I don't know if I am happy about it, personally. If I never had to see another torture photo again I would be fine. The ones we saw already were awful enough. Aside from seeing the phots and having our worst fears brought to light, what will it accomplish? Like I said before, it is very different from the previous administration. Obama isn't looking for support for this war. I would HATE for just one person to be killed (remember the incident in Falluja?) becuase of these pictures.
Then the RW will accuse Obama of putting our troops in harms way. Let the courts force hands at this point. It ends up being a win win.
Personally-- I thought the release of the torture Memo's were far more important. But that is just me.

Good morning everyone.
I just hope Obama isn't doing this on "advice" from people who enabled the policies under the Bush crime family.

The CIA seems to be lying about who exactly was briefed on the torture.

With their track record, it shouldn't be a surprise. Maybe we need another Church Committee to investigate the abuses done to enable the Bush crime family.
She is going to going rename the GOP to "Sir Farts Alot"

I love when Randi gets on a riff regarding how important it is to call representatives. Thom and Randi seem to be the 2 prog hosts that super duper push this important issue.
Comment byRaine on 05/14/2009 21:56:41
OK, Randi does not live in Capitol Hill if she is near the Cathedral.
